Officials initially set up the clinics to vaccinate middle and high school students.

After a light turnout the first weekend, they expanded to include pregnant women, people ages 4 to 24, anyone who lives with or cares for infants under 6 months old, and adults with underlying medical conditions.

Isn't that basically everyone? Doesn't everyone have a medical condition of one kind or another?

There is no shortage. Artificial scarcity is being used to hype demand.

It is their fault if they don't supply enough vaccine while telling everyone they will die if not getting vaccinated.

Also, government will not run most of our clinics (at least not right away). They will just pay the bills.

How many of them actually died from asthma while having the flu?

Nice non sequitur. If asthma is killing these people then why weren't they dying, OFF SEASON, in previous years?

Flu deaths happen because of secondary infection, usually pneumonia. Influenza is considered the cause because, well, what the f*ck else makes sense?

This is a tactic used by AIDS deniers / conspiracy types. Play semantics by saying AIDS doesn't kill people, secondary infection does. It's technically true but the intellectual dishonesty is clear.

* Pregnant women
* Anyone 4 through 24 years old
* People 25 through 64 with health conditions that make flu more dangerous. These include asthma, diabetes, chronic heart and lung conditions, kidney failure, or a weakened immune system.
* Anyone who lives with or cares for children less than 6 months old
* Health care workers who have direct contact with patients and cannot receive vaccine through their employers.

Which leads me to why swine flu is stupid. If I were to worry about anything-and I don't-swine flu would be pretty near the bottom of the list. Here's a list of things that are a higher priority of things to worry about:

# Dying alone.
# Not getting recognized for your genius.
# Settling for a shiatty job.
# Getting married.

Just to be clear, not getting married isn't a problem, getting married is. Most people, due to fears of dying alone, will marry some jackass because they think nothing better will come along. They're usually right. But even if you find someone who isn't a total cock, marrying them will ruin everything because marriage is a false institution, and a waste of time and money. Cancel that big wedding party and buy a house, dipshiats! Nobody wants to go to wedding parties. Besides, big gatherings lend themselves to communicable diseases. Holy shiat that was a sweet transition. For those of you still not convinced that swine flu is bullshiat, here's a list of symptoms for swine flu versus the regular flu:

Shwirv

If you're healthy and contract H1N1 you'll have a week of flu symptoms and then recover. If you aren't healthy get the vaccine.

How's this instead: If you're healthy and contract H1N1 you'll likely survive. You'll go a day or two feeling only a little ick and then the rest of the week feeling like total sh*t. You'll go to work for the first two days and spread the infection around like the obedient infection vector you are.

Lather, rinse, repeat, until someone who isn't healthy gets H1N1 and dies.

All because you couldn't be bothered to get vaccinated.

"Oh, but the unhealthy person should have had the vaccine!"

Not everyone can get the vaccine. Not everyone who gets the shot will develop the proper immune response and generate the desired antibodies. Especially people with weak / compromised immune systems.

One of the biggest problems with influenza vaccination is that the people who usually need protection (the elderly) are least likely to get a good immune response from the vaccine. We are absurdly lucky this year that (some of) the elderly have some measure of immunity to this strain from pre-1950.

Still, whatever happened to altruism? Everyone gets the vaccine and those that can't don't need to worry so much about it.

jaytkay [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-11-23 01:29:52 PM
Baby Diego: Still, whatever happened to altruism?

Altruism is waning because Jenny McCarthy is warning people off the vaccine which causes altruism. And dyslexia.

Talondel 2009-11-23 01:31:27 PM
Math fail. The percentage stated in the headline is off by at least two orders of magnitude. It should be closer to .13% I know New Yorkers as a rule drastically overestimate the relative size and importance of thier city, but there aren't 830 Million people living there.

FWIW, I got the nasal vaccine last week. I was the first one to get it at that doctor's office (and there around 8 doctors there), as it had just arrived 20 minutes ago. I did not turn into a zombie, and I did not get the flu from it.

Only reason I even got it was because my wife had the flu, and we have a 5 month old baby, so I figured one of us needs to be flu-free to take care of her and make sure she doesn't get it.

Noble Drusus 2009-11-23 01:34:47 PM
I brought baby Drusus to the weekend vaccination clinic and it was actually very well run, clean and well organized. Everyone there was helpful and friendly and I felt even the cops were professional and courteous. The little crowd that was there early thinned out after about 10am so I felt silly for racing over there so early in the morning to beat the crowds... derr.... but for a government run health thingy, I give it an A+. I thought it would be stoopid and all governmenty-dumbish, but in reality it was smart and convenient.

Whoever was in charge should be in charge of more stuff.

I think the turnout was low overall because most kids were inoculated in school or at their private Dr. I went because it was on the weekend and didn't have to take a day off.
