Several times recently I've pulled off to the side of the road to text someone because I was carrying on a conversation. Not saying it was anything vital, but if I'd left it it would have been 1/2 hour to 3 hours before replying.

At least you pull over.

I TRY to not even talk on my cell while driving (I fail at that sometimes - maybe 2 x a month).

Well, that certainly would explain why there are so many terrible drivers out there.

I never text in a car unless it's parked. I rarely even call people while driving unless I have to in an emergency or if I'm picking up someone somewhere I'm not familiar with.

I've never really understood the compulsion to respond right away. Many times, people will interrupt the face-to-face dialog they're having with someone to answer their phone, or reply to a text.

I want to blast my horn at every idiot I see talking on their phone while driving. Especially cornering.

Massa Damnata 2009-11-23 12:21:54 PM
Got hit by a car as a pedestrian once. I had the walk, she was fifteen metres back from the corner, not going particularily fast. I stepped out. I turn my head because I could see her still coming. Once I saw she was on a cell phone I knew I was going to get hit. I did.

I can't imaging the level of distraction present in someone texting while driving.

I admit to having done it immediately after I got my new cell phone. Then I realized just how dangerously it made me drive, and stopped.

yea, go ahead, yell at me.

Is that when you set the ringer on vibrate and shove the phone down your pants?

It is easier to do on the interstate because cruise control steers for you.

I frequently talk on my cell while driving, but I use either my bluetooth headset or the bluetooth speakerphone function of my Garmin.

Then again, I have my phone set up so that there are only a few people whose numbers will actually cause the phone to ring. Any other numbers are just silent.

Texting while driving isn't that bad, considering that I jerk it daily on my morning cummute.

Most invigorating 14 seconds of my drive.

Maybe I am turning into an old fart, but why bother with text messaging? On a cell phone doesn't it take like 2 minutes to type out 2 sentences? Isn't it easier to just call the person and tell them directly what you want to say?

Need_MindBleach 2009-11-23 12:30:16 PM
You should note that the survey doesn't ask if drivers regularly text while driving, it asks if they've ever sent or received a text message while driving.

Same thing with cell phones, 66% of drivers say they've used cell phones while driving. For example, I would have to answer that I use a cell phone while driving because I once did it years ago.

Why bother calling someone? I find that new-fangled telegraph to be the premiere form of communication.

Makes no sense to me too, at least in the way texting is used by the kids- they carry on full conversations like that. I'll text, but it's usually for something where I'd spend more time waiting for the call to connect than it would take the both of us to send the info (usually a simple question/answer that doesn't need an immediate response).

I can understand talking while driving, but you need to be using an earpiece if at all possible. Texting while driving is just unforgivable.

"A study by Car and Driver magazine found texting while driving more dangerous than drunken driving."

I can believe it. I see this on a near daily basis, particularly in the afternoon drive home. And I would expand the age range upwards.

Don't get me started with soccer moms on the cell....

Say what you want, but people are not going to stop texting while driving. Everyone says that they're against it, but then they do it themselves.

Maybe we should focus more on teaching people how to text more safely while driving. Only two or three characters before looking back at the road, not texting while going more than 45 MPH, and so on.

hovsm 2009-11-23 12:32:09 PM
I'm 33 and I have never "texted" so the whole "while driving" is out. I'm very much a curmudgeon about cell phones in general so I guess I should say "Texting is for pussies!"

If you see the above, please put down your cell phone and apply the brakes. When I die, I don't want the last thing said of my life to be, "gtg, just rammed a moto, bbl"

Motorists will oblige as long as you motorcyclists stop weaving in and out of traffic and treating your vechile like a bicycle (eg Wheelies during busy traffic).
