A police officer who was sacked after lying about something involving a hat wants his job back?

Am I close? Couldn't be arsed to RTFA as this is the bizarre green light of the day.

Perhaps not the most elegant way to state it, but the headline accurately conveyed what the story was about. But then, I'm not an illiterate mongoloid like submitter.

Something about his trooper hat, possibly being lost or damaged or otherwise unfit or unavailable for use, and a lie told to his superior regarding said issue.

Yes, people can get fired for lying about lapses in dress code.

/checks article
//Yayy literacy!

"looked for 2 hours for his hat"? There's your tipoff to bullshiat right there.

How insecure do you have to be in your job to lie about losing a $45 piece of equipment?

"I lost it."
"Here's another one, and you owe us $45."
"Ok."

Thomas C. Wetherington, 22, told The News & Observer of Raleigh that losing his job in a misunderstanding about his hat is especially galling considering the kind of misconduct other troopers have committed without getting fired.

So his argument to get his job back is that "Other cops get away with stuff."

including a trooper who received a five-day suspension in 2002 after he was caught repeatedly having sex on duty in and on his parked patrol car.

Chief says I can't have sex in mah patrol car no more, Betty Sue.

One trooper was quoted as stating: "Frog blast the vent core!" before running toward another trooper & exploding.

In several cases, those involved were not fired, including a trooper who received a five-day suspension in 2002 after he was caught repeatedly having sex on duty in and on his parked patrol car. On one occasion, the trooper inadvertently left his handgun behind, where children later found it, the newspaper reported.

Yeah, I can see his frustration.

How much does a hat fib weigh?

Bit'O'Gristle [TotalFark] 2009-11-23 03:01:52 PM
His farking hat blew off. The highway patrol is BIG about troopers wearing their hats during stops. He couldn't find it, and believed it to be lost, blown away by the wind. The jackass he stopped stole his hat, and even though the troopers name was in it, he never returned it. The troopers supervisor said that the officer was lying about his hat, and fired him.

/that about covers it.
//beyond that, it's hard enough to get people who WANT to be police officers in this day and age, and to fire one over some bullshiat like this is retarded. Of course, they could always lower the test scores, and get some more minorities in to fill the slots. Don't think it doesn't happen.

It's a Sunshine Day! 2009-11-23 03:02:52 PM
It's just something editors do. 'Hat Fib' isn't the worst headline consolidation out there.

For example, I just hate when headlines call the mother of a missing/killed child 'Tot Mom'. I'm not fond of the word 'tot' for kids. Maybe it also has something to do with my loathing of Nancy Grace, who started the whole 'Tot Mom' thing.

I'm ok with Tots of the Tater variety, though. They're delicious. Go figure.

//I seem to have wandered off the point. Sorry about that.

Speedbts alt [TotalFark] 2009-11-23 03:07:42 PM
The trooper probably wanted to be a cop his whole life. Now not only is he out of a job, but he might never get to be a cop again. I understand his desperation.

But seriously who leaves after the cop? How did this guy get his hat? Why was it still in his car? Why didn't the trooper who found it just give it back to the guy discretely?

Maybe he's too much of a jerk, or not enough of a jerk, I forget how it works with them.

Flogirl 2009-11-23 03:08:37 PM
Don't know why, but this hat fib incoherent headline reminded me of this from the Simpsons: 'Deadbeat dad beat dead'.
