If I were the judge: sentence each of the perps the legal penalty for whatever crimes they're charged with, plus detention in a really boring class for the length of time of the shutdown times the approximate number of people in the shutdown.

If concealed-carry was allowed on campus, they could have shot back.

Good thing they didn't use a pellet gun, or the entire city might have had to shut down. They actually made some sort of "there's a school shooting" announcement over a freaking BB gun? Seriously? I probably still have a bb or two embedded in my body somewhere from "gun fights" as a kid... if it's something a 10 year old can take the pain from, it's probably not worth shutting down a school over. But then, what do I know? I'm not a giant freaking wussy.

I love how they pointed out the mother of two who needs help getting a job in the article.. Thats pretty clever of her.

It's almost as if the writer thought the lack of panic was a story in itself.

The mother in the story was merely inconvenienced by the shooting. She wasn't the shooter. But the shooter could be some Volvo-driving soccer mom. They don't know. Who does a drive-by in a Volvo?

The shooter was using a Red Ryder carbine-action, two hundred shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and a thing which tells time.

No, it was a bright orange Air Soft pistol, but it was a semi-automatic with a high capacity magizine.

Why isn't a lock down false imprisonment? What are they going to do if you just walk out, shoot you?

Was it really a bb gun or an air rifle? (too boring to RTFA) Air rifles can be quite dangerous, BB guns, not so much.

Back in the 1980's my friends and I were too poor to afford paintball guns so we did mock wars with BB guns. Yeah they hurt a little, but we wore goggles and no one got hurt.

What. The. Fark. Are. You. Smoking?

A bb gun IS an air rifle...you know you PUMP the air INTO the gun, compressing it via a piston to allow it to be projected from the barrel.

We used to do that all the time. We had rules, no more than 2 pumps within 15 feet, over 30 feet, no more than 8. Never pump 10 times. Never.

Nobody wore goggles, the most I ever got was a really bad blood blister. A few of my friends have lifelong souvenirs from the event however in the form of bb's lodged in their leg, arm, etc. Fun times.

Uhhm, no, not to the rest of the world genius. In the first place a BB gun is not a rifle because it has a smooth bore. Secondly it can only pump once and for safety reasons it cannot generate a velocity higher than 210 fps. Therefore it is NOT the same thing at ALL to an air rifle, which is an actual rifle and capable of producing velocities similar to a firearm.

You were very lucky to get away without an injury. I was struck right in the goggles several times, really glad I wore them. Also, we never used multi pump guns, only the cheap Daisys. Besides which, like I said we had no money and the one pumps were very cheap.

Do they still make crossman? I always found them to be superior quality. In fact I still have my father's sixty year old crossman air rifle.

Odd. No panic? No "I survived the BB gun massacre of 2009"? stuff? How rational.

I have a pellet rifle (single pump) that shoots a little over 900 ft. per second and I seriously doubt it would bring down a rabbit. (possibly with a good head shot) However it will bury the pellet in a cat's butt.

Hunting rabbits or hunting cats...I'm really not too picky. I'll get some good hollow point or pointed pellets and hope for the best. Just need a good rifle because the one I'm using now belongs to my friend and is about as old as dirt. I might as well be throwing rocks.

I was studying in the law library when our Dean came by and announced that "everyone should get away from the windows and remain inside, there has been a shooting." Everyone looked around for a couple seconds then went back to outlining. Ahhh exam time.

I got a nice cheap Crosman built air rifle recently at Dicks Sporting Goods. It's a Remington Summit 22, with a decent CenterPoint scope for about $179. I think they also sell it at Cabella's under an in-house brand. It shoots well and the .22 pellet carries enough energy to kill a rabbit from 30 yards or so. I also got a Gamo from them, nicer gun, but the scope was crap.

I've never been able to keep a rifle scope on my rifle. They make scopes just for pellet guns but I've never bought one. There's very little re-coil. don't know what causes the things to vibrate (or whatever is the problem) off.

vodka 2009-11-23 11:00:50 AM
When they lock down a campus like this are you legally required to stay there or is it just a recommendation? Especially if you're not a student, can they legally hold you like this for possibly "multiple" hours?

When I was a kid, a sociopathic prick went on a shooting spree with one of these & got me in the leg. I'm walking around with a copper ball bearing burred in my calf muscle because of him. I can assure you that, while not deadly, they do cause harm. My nerves from the shrapnel down are not quite right. He also hit a girl in the back, causing partial paralysis.

He's due out of jail soon, which should be fun for readers of the local crime blotter.

That is why I prefer nukes. With an ICBM delivered 25 megaton thermonuclear device, even if you miss by a couple hundred feet, it doesn't matter.

Good thing it didn't happen here in Mass. They would have had grief and trauma counslors swarming all over the place, all the schools closed down, and mandatory anti-hostility training being broadcast all over PBS.

And renewed calls for banning these dangerous weapons of mass destruction. They are BB hoses, you know.

It has to do with the nature of the recoil. With a real firearm, the recoil is to the rear. With an air powered gun, there is a back and forth motion due to the springs and such that are in the works. That motion is what will tear up a "normal" scope since it isn't intended for that kind of thing. A scope intended for airguns will be able to handle it. I have a real cheapy on my pellet rifle and it holds zero quite well.

(And FTA: Students, who were near the end of classes before the Thanksgiving break, were taken aback by the reports of the campus being closed over what seemed a minor incident.)

These are the same students that were biatching like crazy a week before because the school didn't go into lockdown when a couple students were robbed nearby off campus.

Them too.

Zebulon 2009-11-23 01:25:05 PM
The problem here is that the school can't win. If they did nothing and a student got shot, even if the student wasn't really injured, the students would cry out that the staff didn't care about their safety. Worst case scenario, a kid actually loses an eye or something, then there would be a *huge* lawsuit.

Plus, they may not have known it was a bb gun at first. They may have just gotten a report of someone driving around campus with a passenger sticking a gun barrel out the window.

we did that in college- had a range set up on the chunk of dorm
roof that was outside our window. just a one-pump daisy, the small
one. great fun and nobody got hurt or even heard the darn thing,
cause nobody ever complained.

what they did complain about was the m-80's in the toilets...

As a student who was in the dorms at the time, I'm getting a kick, etc...

Basically they set off the alert system, went over the loudspeaker saying there had been a shooting and told everyone to stay indoors, proceeded to send out an e-mail with the subject "Shooting reported on Coral Gables campus", and then an emergency text message. Not until the end of that text message did anybody know what was really happening. The last sentence said ""BB gun was used".

Last week there were a few students robbed at gunpoint very close to campus, and the police did nothing to alert anyone. I guess they decided to earn their credibility back by ridiculously overreacting to a drive-by BB gun attack.

My international law professor was locked down inside the Rat and apparently went apeshiat at the notion that his wanting to leave was not immediately catered to. I would have paid good money to watch that kraut go bonkers.
