WTF is it with these greatest ever lists comprised of only movies from the last decade or so??

chemical_angel: WTF is it with these greatest ever lists comprised of only movies from the last decade or so??

New millennial nostalgia, apparently.

Well, "The 10 Best Movie Soundtracks of the Decade" IS the title of the article...

This is a true statement. Such a great movie.

This list fails without The Big Le---

What's that you say? That was more than 10 years ago... Crap, time flies.

Barakku [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 04:05:01 PM
New Moon? Really? Not to argue about the movie's quality even, but one of the best soundtracks in the decade just happened to come out less than a week ago?

Now how about a list of film scores. Goldsmith had some good stuff before he died.

Looks like a viral ad for New Moon to me.

I've only SEEN one of those movies...Oh Brother where art thou.

Lov the soundtrack to it and own it.

It's not a greatest ever list. It's the "10 Best Movie Soundtracks of the Decade". Probably because it's the end of the decade.

imgod2u [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 10:18:46 PM
Personally, I rather liked the soundtrack to Spider-man 2.

salvador.hardin 2009-11-22 10:22:39 PM
Subby needs to crawl back in his hole with Bob Seger and reminisce about the days of old.

The soundtracks to Once, High Fidelity, and Juno are all far from failure.

mrgromit 2009-11-22 10:24:06 PM
DRTFA, but they *did* include "High School Musical," didn't they?

Fano 2009-11-22 10:24:17 PM
So, the new Twilight film makes it? Not suspicious at all. Also, doesn't Snatch make it under the wire?

The first decade of the 21st century ends on Dec 31st 2010.
I blame "Party like it's 1999", the Y2K bug hype, and general stupidity.

SwingAwayMarell 2009-11-22 10:25:04 PM
8 Mile

Daquin 2009-11-22 10:27:38 PM
The list could have gone with any of the following and been better for it:

Kill Bill
Kingdom of Heaven
The Fountain
American Gangster
The Departed
Enchanted (cue the "know how I know you're gay" pic)

Lord of the farking Rings!

(sigh)

GypsyJoker 2009-11-22 10:30:34 PM
10: The Twilight Saga: New Moon [Atlantic] (2009) Swirling, moody contributions from Death Cab for Cutie, Thom Yorke, and St. Vincent playing with Bon Iver make this feel less like just one more entry in the teen-vampire-flick brand mania and more like a mix-tape meant for wooing some hard-hearted hipster, but-oh wait, that's probably just what Alexandra Patsavas and co. were going for. We'd feel bad about liking it so much if-like Edward Cullen himself-it wasn't all just sooo pretty. Rachael Maddux

Rachel Maddux obviously cuts herself.

Yeah, 'cos there were so many epic parties 12/31/00, right?

10 "best" soundtracks and it's all compilations of Various Artists?

That's like saying Grand Theft Auto has the best video game music.

stickintehmud 2009-11-22 10:31:26 PM
well #1 was a winner, at least.

This list is apparently made of movies that used "songs" and not "compositions," so that knocks a few of your suggestions out of the running

Tartan69 [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 10:31:45 PM
I agree with subby, especially in regards to numbers 1 and 5. Most of the rest of these suck. And how do you leave off "8 Mile"?

That said, here is my short list of best soundtracks from the last decade to chew on:

Singles
Last of the Mohicans
Pulp Fiction
Dazed and Confused
Grosse Point Blank
Reality Bites
Reservoir Dogs
Friday

Fish in a Barrel 2009-11-22 10:34:04 PM

what... no "Spongebob Squarepants: The Movie" soundtrack?

It had motorhead, the shins, ween...

Uh, that's his point, dumbass. All the epic parties were, of course, on 12/31/99, even though the millennium technically wasn't over for another year. As he said, blame general stupidity.

I always like the Color of Money soundtrack. Unfortunately you can't really find easily, and not many people even think the movie is that great. I liked the movie, but what I remember more (at least here in Boston) the movie kicked off a pool craze.

I'm sure there were some epic parties the next year. Just fewer of them you didn't know about them.

Hell every night somewhere in the world is probably a party that if you attended, you would consider the greatest party you ever went to.

no, the first decade ends on dec 31st 2009

a decade is 10 years
2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010

count em 10

the reason the millennium didn't technically start until jan 1st 2001 was because there was no year 1

retard

Glad to see Vanilla Sky on that list, I actually still have the soundtrack for that movie.

Since no one is gonna list the article's choices:

10: The Twilight Saga: New Moon [Atlantic] (2009)
9. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou [Hollywood] (2004)
8. Vanilla Sky [Reprise] (2001)
7. High Fidelity [Hollywood Records] (2000)
6. Juno [Rhino Records] (2007)
5. Almost Famous [Dreamworks] (2000)
4. Garden State [Sony] (2004)
3. I'm Not There [Sony] (2007)
2. Once [Columbia] (2007)
1. O Brother, Where Art Thou? [Mercury] (2001)

/Dislikes short lists that span more than one page

Tried the sdtk to I'm Not There. Nice set list, but boy. WOW. Those are some farking bad covers. Always excited to hear covers of All Along the Watchtowers, but that bossanova tinge to it was fugly.

While I own (and adore) a few of the ones on the list in the article (as well as quite a few already listed in this thread), these are the 10 film scores that I listened to the most during the decade now ending (with links to my favorite cue off of each score).

alberto iglesias kothbiro (from the score to "the constant gardener") (new window)

brian reitzell underture (from the score to "30 days of night") (the best thing I took away from viewing the film was an authentic adoration for this score). (new window)

jean-pierre taieb le banquet (from the score to "frontière(s)") (new window)

john murphy in the house - in a heartbeat (from the score to "28 days later") (new window)

shigeru umebayashi lovers (flower garden) (from the score to "house of flying daggers") (new window)

tan dun (feat. kodo and itzhak perlman) yearning for peace (from the score to "hero") (new window)

angelo badalamenti mathide's theme (from the score to "a very long engagement) (new window)

goblin non ho sonno (from the score to "non ho sonno" ["i can't sleep"])(new window)

clint mansell (featuring kronos quartet & mogwai) death is the road to awe (from the score to "the fountain")(new window)

howard shore nine elms (from the score to "Eastern promises"(new window)

reinhold heil & johnny klimek to canada (from the score to "george a. romero's 'land of the dead'") (new window)
