Fantastic little cars. You can build them into a real monster for less than five grand - that includes the purchase price.

Ditch the weeny four banger or V6, drop in a small block V8, stiffen the chassis and suspension, wrap the wheels in race rubber and you're set!

A bit tail-happy, but all properly balanced cars are.

He's under 25, that makes you still a kid.
Lawn. Off. Now.

Poor kid

My sister had one with the V-6. It was a pretty cool care until it caught fire.

The kid is dying. The Fiero is probably his first (and only) car. Cut him some slack for wanting to restore it before he passes away.

My cousin is 17 and has Ewing's Sarcoma. He was diagnosed at 14. His first car was going to be a Nissan 280z that his dad had bought as a wreck.

When it came time to paint it, money was pretty tight. One day, as his father was working around the shop, a guy walked up and said "Are you Scott's father?"

My uncle said yes, and asked what was up.

The guy proceeded to say he owned a paint shop and wanted to paint the car. A trailer arrived shortly after to pick it up and take it to the shop.

They did all the prep, painted it then had it detailed. When my uncle tried to pay for it, he was laughed out of the office.

It's too bad we didn't get that green a week ago. I'm pretty sure farkers would have helped out their bank account a little.

From what I understand, the supercharged Buick 3800 Series II V6 is almost a direct bolt-in, and that's what a lot of people use to make monster-Fieros. That's a lot of HP for a tiny car, must be a blast to drive.

Marcus Aurelius [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 04:32:22 PM
I hope it was at least the later V-6 version. The original was built on the Chevette.

wild9 2009-11-22 05:00:45 PM
Hrmm, I guess he gets his inspirations from the Fiero. You know, a little small in the front while being slightly aged.

SeamusFerrell 2009-11-22 05:01:18 PM
He's 18, not a kid. Also he is an idiot for having a "prized" Fiero. Finally, there is nothing heroic here.

Cewley: didn't fieros pretty much need restoration brand new?

LOL! I had one. Jebus. Had to work on that thing every farking weekend. What little I know of car repair comes from owning a Fiero.

But it was a fun little ride, a glorified go-cart. I used to take it up Hwy. 9 (not sure if that's the right number) through Dawsonville, GA and do insane things with it.

I give him 36 hours before he gets pulled over with that tint (stupid 50% mn tint law)

otherwise seriously hats off to him and the community...although I hate that car I respect it more than any of the crap most of the manufacturers are coming out with these days (I'm particularly looking at you Toyota).

Yea. They were the shiznit for kit car chassis, though.

You must be seeing a different picture than I am....Those windows do not look tinted. I should know. Broad daylight and you cannot see into mine. Never been pulled for heavily tinted windows either.

Dude, it's Fark. Cancer = instant hero. If the kid was in the military and had cancer, that little tag would absolutely explode.

EfiniX 2009-11-22 05:08:58 PM
So his plan to beat cancer is to restore a Fiero and die of ghey?

I just glanced over tfa... it's his third fiero. I don't know whether to feel sorry for him or whether to applaud his determination.

Don't bash the Fiero. As mentioned, replace the engine, put the "new" suspension from an 88 in it if you don't have an 88, and have fun.

Had one, sold it, considering another.

Because restoring his junker will somehow cure him of cancer?

Unixfreak [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 05:23:22 PM
I don't get all the hate on this kid because he likes fieros. Every car guy likes cars for their own reasons, that's beyond explanation.

Besides fieros can be kinda cool. Yes they have some problems with engine fires, but have you ever driven one? I can understand why he likes them. They're snappy, fast and handle well. Not to mention they get decent gas mileage and are light as a feather.

Kudos to him and the community. To all of you talking shiat, what have you done to make someone's life better lately?

Oh so you only have to replace the engine, transmission and the entire body.

What about the interior? I bet a Lamborghini looks ridiculous with a 1985 Pontiac interior.

/sounds great

doing a quick google search, the body kits have interior kits available to match.

so really, you need to strip it down to the frame and rebuild it from the ground up with all after market parts just to make it not suck.

yes, i believe that is correct.

Third_Uncle_Eno 2009-11-22 05:44:35 PM
ahhh yes.... the Fiero...
the 4 cyl. in the first couple of model years tended to catch fire, due to oil dripping on some hot surface or maybe wires or whatnot...
[i think they fixed it in 1986]
[and it generally only happened if it was driven aggressively, or not properly maintained, or both]

and the front suspension / 'front end' was from the Chevette...

but over looking that, the 2.5L "iron duke" was a great engine, legendary for its long term reliability.

and the styling is pretty damn cool, IMHO.

/pocket rocket?

pvd021: and let all the strangers handle your Ford issue.

Defunct Pontiac division of GM, but close enough to make the point.

Pfft, he should have had a Delorean.

char_boy 2009-11-22 05:47:45 PM
The only person I knew who drove a Fiero was our gay hairdresser neighbor, who used it to tow his jet ski.

I remember a guy in Michigan in the news whose Fiero's engine burned up. He converted the car into a grill, with the burners in the back where the engine used to be.

SeamusFerrell 2009-11-22 05:48:03 PM
Look. It is nice for people to help an ADULT that is dying fix up his jalopy, even if it is a questionable car. If I had spare parts I would send them his way. If I lived near him, had free time, and knew anything about fixing cars I would help. Yeah, I used an Oxford comma because I can. However, I do not believe that would make me into a hero.

The other thing I find amusing is that he doesn't want to burden his parents with restoring the car. Uh, they might sell it or junk it and not be burdened at all.
