I don't really have a problem with this. In fact, I think it's a good idea.

And when they start giving low-cost sterilizations to any person who asks, I'll volunteer my time for the effort.

One would need to get a breeder's license and pay quarterly taxes for business income.

These laws are great in theory, but usually lack provisions for enforcement. Plus, in the current economy most people will choose food on the table over Fido losing his testicles.

Can you imagine how godwinned the thread would be, If that law ever become into existence?

/ There should be an alternative law for comparison to communism/socialsm. It's... becoming quite overuse for the stupidest of reasons.

Trance750: So what happens when you want to breed dogs or cats?

It's not always about what you want.

/nothing against you, actually, but this is one of my pet pieces.

How many animals are killed in shelters every year in the United States?

According to http://www.petrescue.com.au , approximately 6 to 8 million animals enter U.S. shelters every year, with 3 to 4 million of those animals being euthanized.

Some numbers in the 70s were as high as 15 million, but this was in the early stages of the spay/neuter campaign.

Nearly 9 out of 10 puppies sold in the U.S. come from puppy mills (cats do not have it any better), which repeatedly breed the female dogs and euthanize them when they can no longer breed. Puppy mills often have deplorable conditions.

It is often the case that an animal is purchased as an accessory. Animals are complex, animals are alive, and animals are smart.

Perducci 2009-11-22 12:22:02 PM
Why would anybody not want to sterilize their pet?

In addition to the obvious issue of overpopulation (isn't it better to sterilize an animal today than to euthanize a whole bunch of them in the near future?), sterilization also helps with various socialization and behavioral concerns.

And it's hardly expensive. Around the same cost as a month of decent-quality pet food, if I remember right.

I harbor no ill-will towards purebreds themselves, as it was not their fault but that of the retarded breeders and those that continue to give them money. In fact a lot of purebreds have quite a few genetic problems and I feel sorry for them.

No animal should ever be a status symbol.

A lot of places have a low cost program. Our pound sells certificates for $35/dogs and $25/cats (what vets charge them) on the first Sat. of the month. Often, when you get there, it's free b/c someone paid for all of them.

I remember watching a dog show on TV once. Each round the judge (there was only one) picked the absolutely ugliest dog, and contestant interviews revealed them all to be creepy dog eugenicists. One woman openly admitted that she neglected her dogs that had genetic "defects" and treated them poorly compared to her "perfect" specimens.

most cities have programs that offer free or cheap-as-free spay/neuter services.

in NYC, the humane society has a mobile pet clinic(an RV with surgical equipment) that tours around various places in the 5 borroughs, you have to call and find when its going to be in your neighborhood and bring your dog/cat. They have a suggested donation of $15, but they would rather do it for free than turn you away.

/this is a wonderful law, it will save many many furry lives. where's the hero tag?

There are purebreds in our local shelter all of the time. Also a lot of "designer" dogs. We got a Bug (Boston/Pug mix) for $46. He's amazingly cool.

I use to work in a Vet Hospital. People constantly would come in their Purebreed puppy from a fancy pet shop and then find out it has Parvo. Either they have it put down or spend thousands of dollars, hoping it will survive. This disease is rampant especially from dogs you know, came from puppy mills. It is so contagious, we would have to dress like a surgeon, mask, booties the works to handle it and then scrub down anything the dog came in contact with.

So yeah, I approve what Vegas is doing. I always believed in, if you want to breed dogs you had to have a license to prove you have knowledge of how to do it correctly.
