I'd be upset too subby. While I agree that marriages have an effect on health, maintaining a healthy marriage is a personal responsibility, not one of government or the health care industry. You pay for your marriage I will pay for mine. I dont want to spend my money helping lazy idiots.

NHS is meant to provide for public health and well being, and IMNSHO, that would include the health of your marriage. Besides, being in an unhappy marriage has a documented negative effect on overall well being.

Marriage guidance couselling and other forms of assistance for couples has been available - for free - from state providers in the UK for *Decades*. How do I know? My Mother was just such a cousellor.

The trouble isn't that the national health system is providing marriage counseling, in and of itself. The problem is that there are limited resources. People who are dying because the NHS can't afford to pay for their cancer drugs are understandably a bit confused on how the NHS is funding something only vaguely related to health.

Any system has to prioritize spending. There simply isn't enough money or resources to dump cash into every warm and fuzzy cause. Every thing you spend money on, is something else that you can't spend money on. People normally only think in the simplest one dimentional terms, they say "Marriage counseling is good, therefore the government should pay for it", not even understanding that everything the government pays for is something else it can't pay for. It isn't "is marriage counseling good", it is "is marriage counseling better than improved prenatal care... is marriage counseling better than drug treatment programs... is marriage counseling better than any of the million other health care problems that could be funded".

Providing divorce funds and meager places for people to stay and employment training once they leave would probably be better for many people.

Couples counselling is also a nice way to end a marriage without turning it into war of the roses. My ex and I were really feeling proud when our counsellor told us most people married 25 years who had just ONE of the things we weathered wouldn't be able to sit in a room together, so we were doing great after all the shiat thrown our way. I think it was a big part of us ending up good friends who firmly believe there is no reason to fight since we're no longer married. Our kids regularly tell us "thank you SO much for not fighting like my friends' parents!"

Its not that i dont agree with you that there is a link between relationships and health, its that where do you draw the line? By the time you decide to draw the line you will be powerless to do so, and it all starts with something you think is trivial. Yay! I only have to wait 18 weeks for further treatment of my condition after my GP refers me for it! Hang on, the "average" wait is only 8.6 weeks. That's much better!

Keep in mind these are the shortest wait times ever in the history of the NHS. England is smaller than Illinois is size and way smaller than the U.S. in population. A system like theirs in the U.S. would be a complete disaster in human as well as economic terms.
