Wow. I would like to change my original assessment, as it seems that my original idea was far too violent. Perhaps cut some of the fighting scenes and film a few extra shower scenes...

Just do the show and do it RIGHT. I gave up after the first few episodes of the new show because of
(a) terrible commentary
(b) gladiators trying to look bad-ass
(c) gladiators obviously going way, way too easy on the contestants.

Design the challenges to give the contestants a massive advantage, and then let the gladiators play to win. The way it stood was better than a lot of reality TV (it wasn't 80% emotional reactions and talking heads) but it still was a far cry away from a sport.

I was talking to my friend about that and I cited the same 3 issues... Especially A & B. The original wasn't exactly the Best TV Ever, but at least it didn't seem like it was written by junior high school kids with commentary by the your dad trying to be hip. Listen to the after-match commentaries and you'd expect their script-writer to have a macro with the stage direction "(VERY EXCITED)"

Now, how that will carry over to the movie, I don't know... But maybe if they take the American Gladiators theme and carry it out to a fictional extreme, with a little bit of tongue-in-cheek-seriousness. Maybe aliens come down to earth and enslave the people, and make them fight to amuse their captors. But here comes the American Gladiators, Earth's only hope... Kind of a cross between ID4 and WWE with a little bit of They Live sprinkled in there.

Eh, who am I kidding. It'll probably be about a 'down-on-his-luck' 20-year-old overcoming odds, Rocky-style, to a fully commercialized pop-rock soundtrack, and with catchphrases like "Let's American up" or "It's time to Gladiate!"

I hate Hollywood sometimes...

Wow a script for "American Gladiators: The Movie" was given the green light and a budget? Amazing and pathetic. Millions of dollars wasted. That money would have been better spent buying "Garbage Pail Kids" cards for homeless people.
