Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 01:27:03 AM
And where was Beau Bridges' Oscar for The Wizard?

Hmmmm?

HE ADEPTLY AND COMPELLINGLY CONVEYED THE HEARTACHE OF A MAN WHO COULDN'T BEAT MECHATURTLE ON THE THIRD LEVEL OF THE NINJA TURTLES NES GAME

...

I'm done now.

oldebayer [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 01:29:52 AM
I've seen at least four movies in which Jeff Bridges out-acted the eventual winner, yet wasn't even nominated. Fark the Oscars.

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: I'm done now.

I guess you picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue.

oldebayer: I guess you picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue score 50,000 points on Double Dragon.

Fixed that for people who (inexplicably) enjoyed The Wizard.

He was totally ripped off not winning for his tour-de-force dual role in TRON. His heart-warming portrayal of the dogged and relentless CLU still brings tears to my eyes.

He's way overdue for an oscar, hope he gets one this time.

FYI, his portrayal of "The Dude" in The Big Lebowski" was NOT one of the four roles I considered him Oscar-worthy for.

Rancho Deluxe
The Fisher King
The Vanishing
The Door in the Floor

Nominated for, but did not win, Starman.

Probably not, it just may be the one he's best remembered for.

Everyone remembers Michelle Pfeiffer in a red velvet dress squirming around on top of a piano, and I have no problem with that mental image, but he was by far the best part of "Fabulous Baker Boys", an amazing performance.

This looks to be a pretty decent movie. Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gylenhaal, Robert Duvall, and Colin Ferrell. T-Bone Burnett was is music producer. The main song on the movie is good. Co-written by T Bone Burnett and Ryan Bingham. Bingham has a really cool voice.

Crazy Heart Link (new window)

You can sample the song and the trailer.

Jeff Bridges was a good actor, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors... and acting, and as an actor he explored roles from Tron, to The Fisher King and... up to... Seabiscuit. He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would Jeff Bridges. Jeff, who loved acting. And so, Jeffrey Leon Bridges, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hollywood, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince.

I still remember him in The Contender - one of his coolest roles - "That's a shark steak sandwich. Farking shark steak. You want half?"

The guy is amazing - sadly under appreciated. He gives these beautifully understated performances - most recently, Men Who Stare at Goats.

It would be nice if both Moon and The Hurt Locker were recognized at the Oscars, as they're two of the best movies that came out this year. But it's unlikely, neither are flashy enough for Hollywood.

For an Oscar? For that performance, in that movie? What the hell is the writer smoking?

My favorites from Bridges

The Big Lebowski
American Heart
Fearless
Winter Kills

I assume they were just referencing Clooney's most recent film.

that said, no mention of Christoph Waltz for Inglorious Basterds? It's the only really role I've seen that seemed like a complete, and well-deserved, shoe-in for an Oscar. I haven't seen the Jeff Bridges role in question, but I dislike it when an otherwise good actor/director wins an Oscar based more on their past performances (see: Scorsese winning for the Departed.)
