OOOOOHS NOOOOOS, we must end nuclear power!!!! gees, Give it an f-in break. I live 6 miles from the monticello nuke plant, and love it.

Second radiation leak today on this continent.

And I live downwind from a nuke plant that had an accident that was defined as the closest to leading to a meltdown, with the exception of Three Mile Island, so I'm getting a kick...

I was wondering why it was unseasonably warm today. Here I thought it was global warming.

They are just marking the anniversary of the big radiation leak with another one. Seems fitting.

I'll gladly donate my tax dollars so you can clean it up personally.

Nah wait.. nevermind. I think I'll buy geothermal stocks instead.

The fact that people were contaminated tells me this was a radioactive material leak, not a radiation leak.

People wet themselves over a little radiation from a nuke plant, yet we gleefully continue to release massive amounts of radioactive materials and heavy metals from the stacks of our coal fired power plants.

But CLEAN COAL! CLEAN!

The ads told me coal is clean now! Why would they lie about something like that?

Radiation leak at TMI?

What are the odds that there will be pictures of looming cooling towers overlaid with some fearmongering phrase in tomorrow's papers?

The Becks of this world will use this as cannon fodder.

We really need to start investing in research for wind and solar.

The public perception of nuclear power isn't going to change anytime soon.

captainktainer 2009-11-22 02:40:29 AM
*yawn* Whatever, it was probably only trace amounts.

What this shows is the necessity of upgrading our nuclear infrastructure, not ending it. Strip Harry Reid of his leadership roles, put all the waste in Yucca Mountain, problem solved.

As a student of the industry, my reaction is more "facepalm" than "everybody panic." Mellow out, submitter.

They're moving massive loads that weigh in excess of 100 tons. Half that load interfaces with the primary coolant side. Most of the time replacing steam generators requires opening containment up in new and different ways. 100 worker contamination events blows horribly and I'm sure I'll be hearing about this in class for a while, but seriously. Whoopie. It's just too damn early to get pissed about this.

Honestly I'm irritated that the article lacked numbers. How much radiation are we talking? I'm guessing not a lot as their major accident may have resulted in a handful of people seeing an extra tenth of a mR. Maybe.

/you receive between 300 and 500 mR a year from background radiation
//more, if you fly a lot or get certain medical procedures
/could we PLEASE stop fearmongering about nuclear? Please?

Britney Spear's Speculum [TotalFark] 2009-11-22 03:24:23 AM
They should put solar panels on top wind turbines and then put them on top of a nuclear power plant.

[citation needed]

I find it impossible to believe that in over 200 years of using coal, NOBODY has ever died at a coal plant, even by accident or from old age. Come on, someone must have fallen down the stairs or choked to death on his lunch break.

As of 11pm, DeSantis reported that all workers had been decontaminated. He said that the contamination was not at a threatening level and was contained to one building at Three Mile Island.

This appalling disaster clearly proves that nuclear power is unspeakably dangerous. I'll be over here choking on the heavy metals (including uranium and thorium) from my friendly neighborhood coal plant and enjoying the warm weather, wishing there were a safe, reliable way to generate lots of power in a convenient manner.

/Loved driving past the nuke plant between LA and SD
//two gigantic concrete titties with wires comin out of 'em.

Loads of people die in coal mines and in accidents transporting things such as coal. Even more people die from pollution related diseases.

Great. Can we replace Nuclear with a power source that doesn't generate waste that creates huge difficulties in storing it so that it doesn't kill us with radiation, create a huge terrorist target due to said waste being both poisonous and radioactive, especially when in tiny little bits being inhaled?

Now that I think of it, can we chose one that doesn't cause huge thermal shocks to bodies of water, and is much more efficient in terms of energy transfer?

Pretty please? All you have to do is stick a few train car sized bouys in the ocean, put of a few pretty fans, and put shiny things in the desert...

And I drove by Bellefonte (Bellefonte Wikipedia (new window))today. Only thing creepier than a running nuke plant is a half finished, somewhat abandoned one..

In other news, even more radiation was emitted by every coal-fired generating plant in the country, and nobody cared.
