Someday someone should greenlight an article where the answer in the headline is "B," just to keep everyone on their toes.

Depends.

.22 solids? Plug up the holes and call it a day. Maybe a doctor visit is in order the next day to pick out slivers if I hit a bone.

A typical concealed carry weapon? Yep. Gonna need that emergency room.

Shotgun? Well, I'll be getting my shoes at half price, at least.

Story was pretty darn short on details.

Maybe he was a big fan of talk radio and thought he would be bootstrappy about the situation.

Seriously, though. Was he insured? Maybe he was afraid of being driven into bankruptcy by an ER bill he couldn't pay.

========================

I wonder how many people with chest pains or a sudden numbness on one arm are going to die tonight because they don't have insurance and are terrified of their families ending up homeless because of an ER bill.

If it's shock (due to loss of blood, or just the trauma) odds are you're not gonna be thinking all that well anyway, so unless someone comes along and notices, you might just sit there thinking it's just a flesh wound...

Yeah, I hadn't thought about that possibility. It's not exactly fair to criticize someone's decisions when body and brain are in the process of shutting down.

Obnox [TotalFark] 2009-11-21 11:26:45 PM
Sounds like my dad. He could be going into a coma and he would still fight off the paramedics. And almost win. He fought in WWII as a marine, and was no chicken, but he was deathly scared of doctors and hospitals. He would self-medicate the most incredible levels of pain, including kidney stones, and once had to be taken against his will to the hospital as he slipped into a coma from anaphylactic shock. Some people just can't be reasoned with.

A bottle of hydrogen peroxide, a few bandaids, maybe an ace bandage and some tweezers... You're good to go.

/Why yes, I do have some scars that were probably avoidable..

British Columbia. I don't think health insurance was the problem here...

It's in Canada. Going to ER would have been free. So yes, he's a dumbass or a drug dealer.

Friend of mine did this with a .177 air rifle when we were little. I went and got his dad after he started throwing up while attempting to cut it out. Then we were at the hospital for the rest of the day, but he suffered no long term effects besides shame - when the bullet hits a bone, you're gonna need some antibiotics.

When Obama finishes socializing and we are living in the U.S.A.S.R, you will be able to shoot your self in the foot and go to the hospital and I will be forced to pay for it via my income taxes.

You know how many people will shoot themselves when they hear they can go to the doctor for free?

LOTS

that's how many.

Come on people! What was he supposed to do? Make his insurance company pay the bill? You people are sick. He was just doing his duty as a Real American and died to save big insurance some hard earned money. I bet this guy created 10 jobs by doing this selfless sacrifice and I suggest you all do the same.

Everybody knows when rich people have more money it turns directly into job creation.

I think something like this may have happened to a friend of mine. In high school, I knew this guy named Delon. Was one of the toughest dudes I ever met. Anyway, the last time I saw him was when I was back from college - I ran into him in front of a 7-Eleven and he had been shot in the leg. His plan was to get really liquored up and let another guy I knew from HS, a real dumbass, dig the bullet out. I told him I thought it was a really bad idea and he should go to an emergency room, but he wasn't hearing it. Only time I ever saw Delon scared and I never saw or heard from him again after that. Should have forced him to go the the ER.

simpsonfan 2009-11-21 11:48:59 PM
He shot himself. But suppose someone else shot him, and it wasn't in some remote area far from doctors. And the guy refuses treatment. And dies. Autopsy shows no freak deformity, heart attack, or side effect that could have caused the death, simply his own neglect of the wound. The shooter gets busted. It would be an interesting murder trial.

Zimmy 2009-11-21 11:49:02 PM
In America? I'll patch it up. Figure a funeral in the long term would cost as much to my family as massive doctor bills.

In Canada? I'll go to the hospital.

I did when I cut off a portion of my thumb with a vegetable slicer. Jack Daniels, rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and a shiatload of gauze. After it stopped bleeding I just kept it bandaged and cleaned it out daily with peroxide and then put on a new bandage with neosporin. Took 2 months to heal and my thumb is shaped weird now but it worked.

Obnox: Some people just can't be reasoned with.

Back in the 1980s, my stepfather used to have a laborer who was a World War One veteran. The man hadn't seen a doctor since his army physical. When the laborer's health started to fail (We gave him a place to stay) we had to call the paramedics.
This old man was so tough, the paramedics couldn't insert IV needles into his arm. And then he refused to go to the hospital.
We had to check on him every hour on the hour to see if he was out of it before we could call the paramedics again. Finally he passed out for good and died on the way to the hospital.

Very good point.

carnifex2005: It's in Canada. Going to ER would have been free. So yes, he's a dumbass or a drug dealer.

My bet is drug dealer. A lot of questions get asked when you show up with any form of gunshot wound. My uncle once shot himself with a round of 22 rimfire. (No gun, just a round of 22 rimfire.) He got cut rather badly by it so headed to the ER. He had a hell of a time convincing the staff and police of his story.

You spelled punched in the face wrong.

Whatthefark 2009-11-22 12:04:14 AM
Assuming it was a rifle or pistol round then I would say; d) Grab another round, use your teeth to remove the bullet from the brass, pour the powder on your wound and ignite it, thus cauterizing the wound.

/Spray on some Bactine, apply a couple of band aids and you'll be up and walking around in no time.

Maggie_Luna 2009-11-22 12:04:34 AM
I just use one of my neighbors information I pilfered a while back. I get treated and not bugged for payment. Win-win! Although they're catching on to me so I stole someone else's information from work a few months ago. If I need drugs I just contact my local dealer.
