50 years? Even their erections are slow.

Ponzholio 2009-11-21 03:59:25 PM
Couldn't they have just made it 'Marty'???

Subby's from Vo Dilun?

Arkanaut 2009-11-21 04:03:45 PM
Why didn't they just rename her Teri?

fustanella 2009-11-21 04:04:21 PM
Formally? As in, on a birth certificate, or engraved invitation to a graduation?

califacondor 2009-11-21 04:06:43 PM
I believe subtard was trying for 'formerly', unless the turtle leads a secret life as a high-class woman.

The artist, formally known as Prince, totally understands

Comsamvimes 2009-11-21 04:07:27 PM
In this case "Pat" might have been a good name.

Let's not get formal here, maybe she was casually known as Terry...

Hahaha I get it. Because Prince dresses all formally.

Linda: It's a nice house, Terry, okay?
Barney: No, you're Terry, he's Todd.

Formally he'd be known as Sir Terry Pratchett, surely.

Why not name the tortoise Bridget?

Honest mistake. They probably couldn't see anything, what with the smoke for the lake that's on fire.

Shell we move move past the former naming conventions and onto the turtle puns already?

My tortoise head would have made that distinction.

Should have gone with "Chaz", just in case they want to keep their options open.

In fifty years nobody ever thought to look at the undercarriage?

eddyatwork: In fifty years nobody ever thought to look at the undercarriage?

It's not a matter of "looking". The genitals are internal when not "in use" and sexing is usually done by evaluation of other external features.

Harry_Seldon 2009-11-21 07:51:28 PM
Terry is a play on terrapin. That's witty!

I thought chelonians were sexually dimorphic.

/I appear to have been wrong

CurlyGirly 2009-11-21 08:41:26 PM
I thought with Aldabras it was pretty easy to tell based on the size. We have a male and a female at the zoo that I work at, and it's FAIRLY obvious which is which.

/Or so we think...

Should have named him Lady GaGa then

/had the sexing reptiles conversation with my 8 year old yesterday -- now I have to point out better reasons than a curved plastron

My brother-in-law's name is Terry. He is married to my sister-in-law, named Mary. So yeah, I am getting a kick out of these replies!

They should take advantage of the introduction of the nominally-masculine name 'Merry' by Lord of the Rings.

Maggie_Luna 2009-11-21 09:53:05 PM
I had a turtle once, no idea if it was male or female. I just assumed male and named it Abe, just Abe. (Wistful sigh) I do miss it.

Bacon Bits 2009-11-21 09:53:20 PM
Would like a word with the Zoo about their renaming policy:

//as hot as some of the GIS results for "merry"

Nah, it's still alive. It's actually really funny. We had to give it away since it was growing too big. It was affecting its health and I wanted a healthy turtle rather than sickly one. We gave it to a restaurant that had a large aquarium however most people give me a shocked look when I say "We had to give it to a restaurant..." then I must explain before I had a chance to. Lovely turtle though, red ear (I assume at the least since it was marked like one) that I had since it was a wee little thing.

Never bit me and I pet it whenever. Is petting turtles unusual? I petted Abe's head and under his chin. Also it's legs. Usually just hung around while I pretended it could fly (I was a child and by fly I mean held it and moved it in the air at a relatively normal pace through the air).

I've had many painters when I was growing up and helped many a turtle across the road.
