This is a an outrage. These liberal congressmen are trying to destroy well-meaning corporations by forcing them to hire members of the lower races. Why can't we just allow the market economy to deal with issues relating to health insurance? If you're too sickly to insure, you die. I thought all you Farkers liked Darwin anyway, so this would only prevent "Idiocracy" as far as most of you are concerned.

FWIW many states have had this law on the book for 10+ years.

Good timing as we're starting to learn a lot about genetics and illness. Next decade or two would be pretty ugly as we discover how many illnesses can be predicted to an extent.

Wouldn't that kind of be like sick people starting their own health insurance company? Insurance doesn't really work that way.

A) Insurance is a gamble where the provider is the house, and those with genetic issues are prone to more diseases--its not profitable

B) When did California last do something properly? And should we really be looking to them as exemplars for the rest of the country?

Good! Insurance isn't SUPPOSED to be 100% profitable for everyone you insure! That's not how it's supposed to work!

I think they want to understand. Especially if they can point to your genetic sequence and say "pre-existing condition, we ain't paying".

I refer to my friends with allergies as genetically inferior. They do not appreciate the humor. They haven't caught on to my family's predilictions towards cancer, alcoholism and heart disease. But that's because they're weak.

I'm not sure what you meant by, "Ignorance and stupidity?" but I was going for, "There is little to no profit in insuring high risk things unless the premiums are sky high."

Also, I used to tease my friends about their genetic inferiority but had to stop when one of my best friends had two autistic children. It ceased to be funny then. And it is real autism, not this crap people are calling autism now.

Excellent news. It will be interesting to see how the less scrupulous insurance companies try to weasel out of it.

As for those of you suggesting that this is counter to the principles of insurance, it really isn't. The trick is to have sufficiently large customer base to spread the load, and dilute the risk. You can make a lot of money with this approach, and still remain thoroughly ethical.

actually genetics risk factors would be a good way to help set peoples rates as long as the govt reguated it to where the insurers didn't rape you with it.

geneically predisposed to cancer + smokes = much bigger price gap for smoker vs non smoker than for people that aren't predisposed to cancer.

genetically predisposed to diabeetus + obese= much bigger price gap than for obesevs non obese than non prediposed to diabeetus.

What about genetically proposed to cancer, but never exposed to carcinogens and get cancer anyway?

The issue is that people who have random bad genes, like the BRAC gene that causes you to have insanely high rates of breast, ovarian, or prostate cancer, would have to pay a LOT more despite not actually doing anything wrong. And with the BRAC genes you can live the healthiest lifestyle imaginable and still get cancer-- it's not triggered by anything.

What's worse, they could charge people higher rates because they were a CARRIER for something bad and their KID might get it and cost them money. And the biggest problem right now, of course, is if you have these genes they usually either give you a ridiculous premium that's so expensive you might as well pay out of pocket, or deny you coverage outright. This will prevent all this.

There's no reason to discriminate against someone because of their genes. The average insurance policy doesn't lose that much on these people, anyway, it's not like they'll operate at a loss if they have to provide coverage.

And think of those poor, poor, defenseless little SHAREHOLDERS.

We can't let anything upset those sensitive little souls, because they'll go out and dump their shares in a tantrum because they'll only make 20% dividend instead of 21%.

I wonder what happens when you reward the unhealthy and non-productive and penalize the healthy and productive? According to behavioral psychology you end up with more unhealthy a non-productive.
