That's why they canceled Beavis and Butthead. There were no more videos to watch.

Is MTV still on? Seriously, it used to be great when they had music videos, but last I looked it was "The Real World" followed by another episode of "The Real World." It no longer had anything to do with music.

If you want to still see good music videos, VH1 Classic is the only way to go. And their shows that aren't videos are still better than anything on MTV. That Metal Show is perhaps the greatest thing to happen to television ever.

do they still play videos? Last i remember, they were kind of going mid-90s MTV route where they were still playing videos, but with more and more autopilot programming.

Yeah, they still play videos, but you're right that there are more and more autopilot programming. And most of their videos are in the form of "Top 100 Such and Such Videos of the [insert decade]" Still better than MTV though.

Really the only thing we can do to save TV is firebomb it and start from scratch...oh yeah, and forbid young women from watching it. Most of them say they "hate" reality shows but it's clear they aren't going to stop watching them anytime soon.

I hate to say this, but MTV was known for some cutting edge tv shows as well as their music videos. The problem is, MTV sold out.

Someone needs to bring this show back in some way or another. What network doesn't matter, there are a lot of creative animators out there who need a proper platform, and a lot of stoners that are getting sick of Spongebob.

MTV2 was suppose to be the music channel after MTV became retarded reality tv. Even that now is mostly shows.

eddyatwork: Remote Control was the beginning of the end.

Remote Control was also still ten quadrillion times better than the crap that would come later. And you can hardly blame one show. The problem was that the executives of twenty years ago saw the success of the show, and used that as justification to make more not-quite-music shows, which then led to not-music shows. Real World in '92 was the final crack in the dam leading to the flood of garbage today.

I would love a show that actually played the entire video all of the way from start to end.

Bring back the music television of the late 80's!

Someone on Fark who worked at MTV posted a while back a long, but very informative piece on how MTV got where it is today.

In short - a channel with videos doesn't bring viewers. And that doesn't generate ad dollars and profit. But once they started overloading the channel with obnoxious, over-the-top garbage, viewers tuned in by the millions. They were suddenly a huge powerhouse network who could command high ad-dollars.

Let's be honest with ourselves. If you owned MTV (or worked there), what would you want? A couple hundred thousand fans watching videos or 10million+ viewers glued to that piece of crap for 2-3 hours at a time? The latter works better for everyone involved. People get entertainment, share-holders see revenue, and it creates jobs.

I hate MTV and haven't watched it in years, but it's kicking ass at holding viewers. Music videos can't do that.

You mean like when MTV showed actual videos right after Michael Jackson was announced dead?

Yeah, I know it wasn't a national emergency, but it did answer the age old question "Who the fark do we have to kill to get MTV to play music videos again?!?"

This is what has happened to all niche programming channels... Sci-Fi, Game Show Network, Tech TV, Court TV, Cartoon Network, TV Land, Nick at Nite, TLC, Discovery, History Channel... the list goes on and on and on. Each one of 'em have become homogenized crap because they make more money appealing to the "Ow, My Balls!" crowd instead of showing the good stuff they used to show. There's a larger group of people that will watch "Indistinguishable Reality Show #35634" and "Ow, My Balls!" than there was watching music videos, or old game shows, or old cartoons.

Sad but true.

This is why the internet will probably one day be the only place to see the good old stuff, and every broadcast channel will look the same.

/also, I know LesserEvil is joking, otherwise I would be ranting right now.

Daria was an amazing show. TRL is the beginning of the end of MTV. It gradually changed from "top 10 videos as voted by you" to "Carson Daly talk show featuring 10 second clips of music videos that you probably voted on, we really don't give a fark"

It's generally acknowledged that MTV stopped being MTV after the Real World premiered in 1992.

Soon after that, came the Real World marathons and othe non-music programs, and music videos were gradually removed from the channel more and more every week.

When MTV2 premiered in 1996, it was a crazy fun free form format of all music videos for a while. Then, the suits killed it too and it was removed from basic cable lineups anyway.

VH1 Classic in the mornings and late nights looks a lot like what MTV looked like before 1992, minus the VJs. Glad I got to see MTV when it was a cool thing. Yes, MTV was once a cool thing.

Pretty much just YouTube...until the RIAA demands they be removed. The recording industry doesn't make much sense anymore.

With things like Youtube and downloads through cable, the idea of a network that shows nothing but music videos seems like a terrible idea. Why sit through videos that you may or may not enjoy when you can just go find the ones you want to watch?

I've never had any problem finding ANY music video on YouTube. Youtube has pretty much become one of my default music sources to listen to stuff I don't own and don't need to own.

Even if MTV went back to showing videos I wouldn't bother. It's all on You Tube whenever I want.

Why do we even care anymore? MTV will never go back to showing videos for any significant amount of their programming. We just need to be happy with the memories and let it die the horrible death all bad things end up doing.

You're not the only one.

I vaguely remember the TV Show, but I've got the entire run of comics sitting on my bookshelf.

I'd love to see the TV Show (and fellow MTV Oddity The Head) to see if it holds up 15 years later, and how it compares to the comics.

I actually have all the episodes on tape. It's not as good as you remember. But it's not as bad as you think it would be either. Totally watchable. The Maxx on the other hand, is waaaay better than you remember it. This rabbit are farking scary.
