My beach camera is for taking voyeur pictures of girls of questionable age.

Sherjo311 2009-11-21 01:25:58 PM
the only fail i detect here is the inability for the girl in question to not take care of her digital camera while she was at the beach.

sand got blown in? hmm... sounds suspect. more like "wow these bartles and james sure are delicious! oh no, i dropped my camera!"

Pretty soon there will be a clause in the small print stating that you void your warranty by taking your new gizmo out of the original packaging.

Elzar 2009-11-21 01:28:10 PM
Gah!!! People who use camera mode presets should be banned from owning a camera.

There are only two modes you need to use: Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority.

Perfect for taking pictures of herself.

Getting sand in it is pretty bad. They probably also don't expect you to dunk it in the water.

duckpoopy 2009-11-21 01:43:06 PM
Too many of these point-shoot cameras have crappy lens mechanisms that jam if you bump them / get sand in them / get lint in them. If you must get a POS, get something without the telescoping lens.

ihatedumbpeople 2009-11-21 01:52:33 PM
MMm.....yeah...sand in a camera is a big no-no. 'beach' mode or not, you have to make sure that thing doesn't get sand or water in it...that should be common sense.

Besides, those "modes" are just preset aperature/shutter settings for certain environments, it has nothing to do with the structure of the camera.

They are all designed to last only 2-3 years. ~$120 every few years for a new cheap camera doesn't really bother me. Or you can blow $1,000.00 on a serious camera.

I agree with you on this point - still the response from Kodak is pretty ridiculous.

I brought my Land Rover into the dealer because of a faulty suspension issue and because the car was covered with mud they said it was my fault for driving through puddles.

Same thing with my Jeep when the tire sensors broke. They said the sensors were fragile and to stop driving it over cracks and potholes in the pavement.

Mmm, nice lens. I have the 20D with a Tamrom 17-50/2.8 on it, and that is also an awesome lens. Sadly I was only about to afford the 420EX when I bought my flash, but it does well enough. Of course when I am out and about at the parks (where I take a lot of pix) I often get odd looks when using a flash in day time. But hey, let them have nasty shadows. :)

AndrewZorn 2009-11-21 02:18:29 PM
without getting into the "beach mode" debate...

if SAND gets in your camera, it is your fault. it is not Kodak's fault if you are careless with your camera. this article is absurd, i hope the woman buys another camera with her life's savings and ruins it too.

In fact, I find it a wonderful 'problem'.

I walked along the beach and into the ocean with a DSLR and expensive lens and nothing happened. My camera doesn't have a beach mode. I guess that's why it still works.

Sure would have sucked if I tripped and fell.

Stop being camera snobs. I have a little Nikon point and shoot similar to the camera in the article. I also have a big bulky DSLR. Guess what one I ultimately take more pictures with. The little P&S is small enough that it's always with me and I only take the DSLR out when I specifically intend to take pictures. Sometimes you don't want a big camera hanging around your neck just to remember some beach fun.

How hard is it to not get sand in your electronics? My laptop also wouldn't play well with sand, does that make it a POS?

Almost as stupid as the Nissan giving the GTR launch control, and then invalidating the warranty if you use it.

Nissan strike again with their notoriously shiat transmissions.

Or I use my camera almost every day. It doesn't just sit in a drawer to be pulled out for birthdays and holidays. It is always in my pocket. The camera on my phone just does not cut it. This is also why I don't use Linux all of the time. I cannot find a decent photo organizing program or editor for Linux. For organizing I use ThumbsPlus! which is Windows only. That is also used for simple edits like cropping. For editing I use PS (yeah, I know an older version works under WINE).

Actually manual mode is very useful for situations where lightening doesn't change. Set the exposure and forget about it. Every picture from there on will be pretty good.

So S (Tv for Canon), A and M are all you really need.

My first real camera was a Canon AE-1. At first I was all snobbish setting the exposure myself, then I found out that letting it do it for me gave really good results. I don't use film anymore though, but I still have the camera. I also have a camera from the 1800's and some plates for it, but I don't use that one either.
