(Entertainment Weekly) Followup Now that news of Oprah's retirement has set in, the question arises: who will replace the void she leaves? Subby's guess: Rosie O'Donnell. They're both about the same size   (hollywoodinsider.ew.com) divider line 22

It's even got the seal of approval.

Is there really a void that needs to be filled?

Oprah's popular because she came out back when network TV was the only real game in town. Since then, basic cable has taken over and the need for a syndicated talk show to bring people from soap operas to the local news has vanished. Hell, soap operas are nearly extinct. The paradigm changes, so why is Oprah really needed?

There is no void that needs to be filled after her. The landscape has changed and she is a very popular dinosaur. People will miss her, but her removal is just another change in a media that is now in complete flux. Replacing Oprah is like replacing Saturday Night Live: it's just a removal of something of the old system that worked but isn't really needed. It just stays because people kept it going.

I would give half the world for Rosie to bring back a talk show (but ONLY if it's like her old one)

I really really miss that show.

It was in the news several months ago that Oprah would be leaving her syndicated talk show and moving to her own cable channel, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). I don't know why this has everyone excited now. .

I'm not a fan of Oprah, but even putting her in the same sentence as Rosie is a disservice. Oprah is able to appeal to a much larger audience than Rosie ever could, no pun intended.

They're both sanctimonious blowhards, but Oprah does it with the condescension of a disapproving grandmother. Rosie's style is more of a braying water buffalo who's headbutting you.

Went for the low-hanging fruit, did ya, subby?

I suspect that Oprah is holding out for more money at the end of her current contract. How much will a network pay to keep her show on the air?

So Rosie gave her show to Elen... so Oprah would give her show to Rosie? I don't see it.

On the plus side (OH EM GEE ROSIE PUN) Elen vs Rosie would be an interesting ratings gamble

None. She is starting her own cable channel. Wanna bet where she's most likely end up if/when she has a new show?

How much can be raised by 2011 to keep her off?

She's the leading mass-media proponent of psuedoscience, quackery, fraud, and outright liars. This is great news for America.

She's not retiring subby, she's just moving. Oprah is one of those people who will never retire.

The only void here is the one between the ears of her fans who actually take her often wrong-headed and dangerous advice to heart.

Maybe the local news can expand to fill yet another hour with, "coming up, what everyday household items cause leprosy". God knows we don't have enough of that yet.

um, why are people discussing this?
