i'm sure the terrorists spend most of their funding on tricking out cars before suicide bombing a market. it's all about appearance right?

So the CCTVs see him running from the car the day before a parade, and decide rather than check the vehicle registration and make a call, there's such urgency they have to asplode his car?

Terrorists take note. Next time, just leave the anthrax in a glass jar on the back seat. No need to rig an explosion, the cops will take of the dispersion for you.

/Should also be concerned that the cops can get permission to use high explosives on a city street faster than they can get info from the DMV.)

Blowing up the car seems a bit excessive.

If they're really concerned it's a bomb, why not get a bomb-sniffing dog or other detector to see if it contains explosives? If not, ticket and tow the car.

You'd think that if the police suspected the car contained explosives, that introducing more explosives -- when the original, suspected explosives have yet to be identified or located -- would be a bad idea.

They told him when they lost sight of him on camera, they carried out two controlled explosions in his vehicle

Now who hasn't done that behind the wheel once in a while? Especially with friends in the car en route to a hockey game after a small mountain of White Castle burgers and you lock the windows shut.

yer an idjit!

Which one makes more noise - as I effortlessly blow them away in my 10-year old stock Chrysler? (Seriously, that's the way it usually goes - sure occasionally there is someone in an SUV or ricer that can put my car to shame but it's rare).

Ah yes. A man of middle-eastern appearence illegally abandons his car near the residence of the head of state and the route of an imminent military parade and runs away. Then he acts surprised when the police take an interest. It must be raaaacissssst.

That thing had a 76 gallon fuel tank. I could not imagine filling that thing up.

There's no problem with the police taking an interest. I'd expect them to take an interest in any car that's parked illegally (and my experience in the UK is that their parking-violation police are incredibly attentive to the slightest violation).

Blowing it up, however, seems a bit extreme for the reasons I mentioned above.

whatever helps you sleep at night

I was just pointing out the fallacy of subby glancing at the article, seeing "Honda Civic", then repeatedly slamming his forehead into the keyboard screaming "HURF DURF RICERS ZOMG LOL JAPANESE CAR AMERRUKUH IS BETTAR RITE GUYZ? I IS GONNA TAG DIS AMUSING"

The point stands - it's still a ricer. Subby said nothing about American cars. I did say something about my Chrysler which does in fact go faster than 99% of the vehicles I see on any given day. (yeah, it could be the way I drive it, but why would you spend twice as much on the latest Mustang or trick out a Honda if you're not going to use the horsepower?)

manbeard 2009-11-21 03:00:18 PM
I think the real story here is how calm and understanding the guy is:

He said: "We have laughed about it a bit now but I'm bit gutted to be honest.

"I know in this day and age they have to be suspicious but I didn't feel this was warranted. I wasn't treated badly, but they could've been a bit more tactful..."

He's understandably put off by the whole thing, but I was expecting him to be foaming at the mouth over a seven-figure settlement and some talkshow appearances.
