I've never owned any kind of Xbox, but I imagine voice chat on Xbox Live to be an awful experience.

Xbox.

What a piece of shiat.

Yeah I'm sure Microsoft is broken up about losing customer who were by and large using their modded consoles to play pirated games. Probably keeps them up nights.

It has its moments either way. The mute function is pretty quick and you can talk to some funny and interesting people once in a while. For the casual gamer, it works pretty well and we play with family and friends online and use the headset.

I don't do multiplayer as much as most, but e.g. in Gears of War 2 it was 99% of the time fine. Sure there were occasional idiots, but as has been mentioned, the mute function works pretty damned well.

They at least had to pay for the xbox online subscription. And then you value as a customer depends on how much of the online stuff you bought, or if you actually put the effort into pirating that too.

You're right, but the online service is at least free, and nearly not as much trash-talking. I've still got the 360 for pirated games, ps3 is just for the online experience now.

I don't care much either way about the pirates, I don't blame MS (I would have done the same thing if for no other reason than to keep the game publishers happy. I do care about the cheats, and there where lots of them to go around for mod'ed concols. Those guys suck ass.

As to the PS3 being hackable. Sure it is, I saw one yesterday hacked up to play all kinds of stuff. I think the issue here might be that the PS3 just finally got some games and there online stuff going at all.

Only thing I can see them losing money on is peripherals. People would rather go out and buy a new Xbox than start buying all that shiat for a rival system.

I'm going to say this to all you none geek types out there. When it comes to electronics like consoles, it can and most definitely will be hacked.

72 hours after that ban I saw patches that evaded this ban and all the water marked COD: MW2's were pulled down and replaced.

There is no stopping a dedicated person with the right knowledge and skill set. All this did was get rid of all the people who paid to have someone mod their xbox for them.

Yes you can and it has.

Any console or really anything that plays any sort of media can be hacked. Which is why copy protection is incredibly silly.

Don't steal shiat, and you won't get busted. If you do choose to steal shiat, don't get pissed that you were busted. Yeah, you' purchased some cheap DLC, good for you, that doesn't make up for the $70 games that you stole.

There are no patches that evade the ban. Microsoft is detecting firmware, not bad stealth.

I misspoke. I thought patch would be a more readily understood word as oppose to firmware. But yes as you stated there is no "patch" but there most definitely is new mod firmware out already that gets you around the ban.

If the yearly cost to update the copy protection is less than the cost of stolen product without the protection, then it's not silly.

When your right, your right. No arguing that. You really can't justify pirating games instead of buying them. So I agree with Smarshmallow despite my obvious views to the contrary.

The only difference between me and fruit_blender is I don't complain about it.

Basically, this.

And, agree with it or not, being banned is one of the risks you should always consider before modding your console. I haven't modded my 360 partially because I don't think it's worth the risk.

It's actually kinda neat. I've met a lot of other military guys on there, and we usually team up to kick some ass on Rainbow Six: Vegas (1&2), as well as a few other games.

As for the whiny kids who scream profanities and such? Well, just like here on Fark, if you don't like it, you can quickly make it so you don't have to see/hear their crap. But thinking about it, the amount of people doing that on XBL is about the same as here on fark.

If you have a group of IRL friends, it can be a good way to connect. We're all in our late 30s with kids and don't get to hang out so much. So maybe once a twice a week we play online. Or you can just go play and see who else is on and join up. Xbox live was always good in that you didn't have be in the same game to see who was online.

We started doing this with Xbox 1 when PS online options were negligible. PS3 apparently has better online now, but since 20 of my friends are all on xbox live, I'm not switching.

I kind of want a PS3, but for multiplayer, I'll still w/ Xbox b/c that's where my friends are.

Thief. I bet you respect the guys who figure out how to disable someone's home alarm so they can break in and steal their TV too... because, they actually put the effort into it.

*WARNING* off topic ramblings below... *WARNING*

this has nothing to do with xbox but i wanted to share anyway. I dont beat my son, though i maybe should, because he's 5'11/250 at 15yrs old. But i still need to discipline him somehow when he farks up. I told him, "for every chore you forget, you owe me 10 minutes of joel osteen." he was like, "WHAT?? mama please no...if you love me..." i shook my head and said, "too bad. i'm tired of reminding and begging. you're almost a man now. start remembering your chores." he swore he would and its been pretty good since.

Now, for the relevent part. I got another call from his school that he's being an asshole in class so i said, "for every phone call i get about you acting up, you owe me 15 mins of Jonas Brothers Behind the Tour DVD." he gasped in horror and said, "I'll run away!!!" LOL. fingers crossed that it works.

This is a terrible marketing idea. Having said that, Xbox 360 is still the most versatile gaming console currently on the market, in my opinion.

You guys should have seen the articles on Joystiq referring to the ban and the subsequent class action lawsuit that's reared its ugly head in the wake of it. General consensus is against the lawsuit, which has little to no merit anyway.

None of the modded Xbox players deserve their money back, especially since it's only the devices that are banned, not their XBL accounts. Banning pirates and cheaters isn't a real customer loss anyway. I don't care if someone wants to pirate games, but don't be stupid and use the same box to go online.

As for the article, why the Jonas Brothers? The little brats that listen to their music are already Xbox360 gamers. I don't want to hear more of the shrill cracking voices of preteens when I play GOW or other multiplayer games. It's bad enough I have heard whining from those whose balls have already dropped. D:

Not since they killed the real headset. The mute used to be right on the controller, so with just a flick, you could mute it without ever having to take your eye off of the screen.

But then, MS in their infinite wisdom, decided to discontinue those headsets for a new design where the mute is now on the actual chord. So now, if you want to mute it, you have to take your eyes off the screen, take your hand(s) off of the controller, and hunt around for the mute switch. Total fail. So you are basically screwed for multiplayer games because this kind of delay means you are going to get blown away by the enemy. So its hard to really get into multi games anymore because they made it so difficult to just make an easy mute switch. Fools.

1) You can mute anyone in under 5 seconds

2) IIRC, you can disable voice chat completely.

3) You can go into a private party so that only you and your friends are in the chat.

4) A lot of games don't even allow cross team chatting during a game.

/only runs into retards once every handful of games, I mute them and the problem is solved.

I thought about getting my 360 modded. I don't play online as often as I play campaigns, and I have no morals when it comes to stealing games or movies or music (just being honest). But with CodMW2 out, I wanted to be sure I'd be able to play online. I'm glad I didn't get it done sooner.

If I did mod it, I'd pay for Gold on a month to month basis.

And yes, it seems that they did change the official MS 360 headset to put the volume control on the line itself.

Either it's been better recently or I'm playing games that fewer screechy kids want to play. Halo 2 was terrible as far as people screaming, calling you a fag or setting their microphone inside a subwoofer.

MW and MW2 seem to have fewer of those types, or the ease of muting has made those types of trolls unsuccessful.

tacchimonster 2009-11-21 01:54:15 PM
Regarding the headset/mute issue:

I may have a partial solution. In your profile's options, you can set the ability to mute everyone outside of your party and friends list.

Granted, this severely limits your ability to have contact with the remainder of your team in online games, but then again I was never one to really care what other people outside my immediate friends had to say. Like I said, it is only a partial solution. But it is something that once I discovered I found myself wondering how I ever managed without it.

It's horrible, but there is a workaround. When playing a game, start a "party" and invite only your friends to it. This way you can play the game against whoever you like, and only hear your friends. I use this method to tune out the endless children on XBL.
