I would've gone for the Hero tag. If I see another "one old rule: obey" or "discovered by a single mom" ad, I will weep silently. I figured the Acai berry thing was a scam when it hit every website like an avalanche - trying to get people to buy in before negative press could get out.

Good! I've recently installed Adblock & Flashblock, but those two ads mentioned in the article were the most annoying of the bunch when I could still see ads.

My biggest gripe with Google is not these scams, it's that they don't do enough to differentiate the text link ads from the site.

I was looking at a family member's Gmail page the other day and there was an ad for "Windows password recovery" software (which is obviously of no value) right below where Google was notifying her that she had not created an alternate email or phone number for password recovery...

To me it was all very obvious the difference between the ad and the message from Google, but to a novice or infrequent computer user, that stuff is terribly confusing.

What I'd really like to see is a sign from Google that they aren't just like every other ad company out there. That they aren't going to play "mission creep" with cramming ever more ads in their users faces. It's not looking very promising at the moment though.

Indeed. I honestly don't understand how people survive on the internet without Adblock Plus. Flashblock is useful, but nearly all flash ads are blocked by Adblock as it is.

heypete: all flash ads are blocked by Adblock as it is.

True, most are. But there was one flash ad not too long ago for "Family Guy Presents: Seth and Alex's Almost Live Comedy Show" that Adblock didn't stop. Damned flash ad was slowing page loads down to a crawl. I installed Flashblock, blocked the ad & page loads went back to normal.

Bingo. If someone buys from any of those places, well, they deserve what they get. I've been installing ABP on all of our work PCs to reduce the ads people see. I've had ABP loaded for so long ads are sort of strange for me.

Good, maybe I won't have to waste so much time dealing with fraud claims against these people. I am sick of explaining to "defrauded" people that they are basically screwed if they gave their card information out willingly. Can't even ban the merchants, because these guys have twenty new visa merchant accounts a day.

It's from Matthew 5:13. It's meant to convince the throngs listening to the sermon that, despite how they are viewed by others, they are, in fact, valuable and blessed. However, because of this quality, they also have a responsibility to stay that way, hence the turn of phrase.

"You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men."

So, basically, yeah - valuable, but underrated.

Just a little something that sends me into a rage:

'Discovered by local mom!'

Like using the word 'mom' somehow gives it credibility.

I know people who think their moms were shiatty, dumb, alcoholic and/or downright evil...

I don't understand. If I give my card number to buy $10 worth of goods, they can't then charge me $1,000. This is the problem with several of these scam sites. For example, enzyte got in legal trouble several months ago for sending out "free sample kits" for shipping only, and then billing the receiver several hundred dollars for a "subscription" to receive a continuous supply of the product for a year, which is a big no-no.

Yes, some people don't read the small print, but some of these sites are simply fraudulent, as well.

Huh?

You would install AdBlock on Firefox but strangely refuse to install AdSweep on Chrome?

Explain your logic.

WillFa 2009-11-21 12:32:31 PM
AdBlock in Firefox works fundamentally different from AdBlock in Chrome.

In Firefox, it's a content blocker. Files matching the pattern are not downloaded to your PC. This gives a small, added defense from trojans and drive-by malware ads. Saves bandwidth, alleviates fears that kiddieporn ads might be in the browser cache when the gestapo siezes the computer, etc...

In Chrome, it's a content hider. You'll still get auto-play flash ads spewing their noise, with no interface to stop/pause/shut the damn thing up... Chrome really needs something like Privoxy to actually stop the crap from being downloaded.

I like chrome, but this is still a deal breaker for me.

WTF is Evony? What does it consist of? What's the premise? I've seen the ads about a million times- always curious, as they're comically lame.

About a year ago, I had an img saved of an ad- before and after shot, "I lost 43 pounds in two weeks!" O rlly? 43 lbs?

At the risk of being labled a Concern Troll... Am I the only one concerned about letting one company with that much market power dictate what products may be marketed online and what products may not?

If I'm selling teeth whiteners or herbal weight-loss plans, and I fairly and successfully bid for ad space, why is it right for them to "deem" me a scammer and pull the rug out from under my small business?

Today it's snake oil salesmen, sure, but who tomorrow? Troubling to say the least.
