As someone who has fixed a lot of hardware in his day? FARK. YES. It's amazing what collects on the air intakes and fan blades of a computer that is used by a smoker. And that shiat just won't come off, either.

I've seen power supplies that would cough black dust when you shook them and CPU fans that were so caked with gunk that the blades wouldn't spin. A heatsink that wasn't transferring heat properly because it no longer had fins - it was a solid brick of copper and tar.

Most of them make that incredulous, "Well, can't you fix it?" face. One guy, he looked inside his tower and then promptly tossed his three remaining cigarettes into the trash bin.

Well; i can definitely agree that smoking can cause some nasty shiat to accumulate in a computer; however I definitely think Apple needs to make a clear note in their warranty that simply owning a computer in a house which has smokers will void it.
Because generally speaking there are only 2 ways to void a warranty: be responsible for the breakage; or try to fix something that is broken.
Now, smoking doesn't break computers, if you were to ask anybody except for a tech who has taken one apart and found that it will. They need to make it very clear that if you smoke you should not buy the extended warranty for 350$ because it will be void.

This is like a car dealer telling you that because you drove through a puddle your car's warranty isn't valid.

And whats with them refusing to replace the cd drive because the rest of the system is failing too and it isn't worth it? Then give me back the money on the warranty; because it is still covered and you still need to fix broken shiat even if other stuff will break soon.

The dust that collects inside any case is technically an inhalation hazard, if you really wanted to get right down to it.

HotWingConspiracy 2009-11-20 03:03:59 PM
I think that is valid, they wouldn't cover it if I sat there dumping the contents of my vacuum's dust bin thing in to my computer.

By the time I sold my white Macbook for an upgrade to an aluminum Macbook Pro, the vents on the back had since developed a little brown staining from my smoking around it. Also that model would fire up the fan quite a lot especially if viewing a YouTube video. This one doesn't for some reason. I don't think I've ever heard the fan spool up.

Then again, I was unemployed at the time so much more indoor-smoking-around-the-computer took place.

This one the brown buildup from smoking around it is harder to see, and it spends the majority of its time in a smoke-free office. But yeah, I can buy the tar build up thing.

If you smoked one cig at your desk, then stubbed it in the wrong place and started a paper fire on your desk which you didn't even realize was happening until it had filled the room with the same amount of smoke a heavy smoker would, over the life of the computer...It would be the same thing. You wouldn't expect the warranty to hold for the first situation, why would you for the second.

Poor choice of analogy. If you drive your car through a big enough puddle, you can completely wreck the electronics, blow fuses, suck water into the intake and hydrolock the engine, etc. No way you're getting warranty work done on that.

I've had apple fix stuff for me under warranty that they arguably shouldn't have: Cracked screen, broken plastic, etc. This must have been amazingly egregious for the guy to get turned down.

As someone who used to repair computers at a local cybercafe, the smokers computers are the worst.

SeamusFerrell 2009-11-20 03:08:18 PM
Apple wasn't saying the warranty is voided because of tar gunking up fans and what not. They were saying it is voided because their workers cannot work on something that is a biohazard. That is kind of a stretch to say a computer exposed to cigarette smoke somehow makes it dangerous to handle. I guess it is a good thing that Apples do not have any toxic components in them.

Rufus Lee King 2009-11-20 03:08:26 PM
I'm sort of afraid of where this precedent might lead. The auto dealer won't honor your warranty because you smoked in the car?

My PC's vents have plenty of dust and dog hair clogging them up, is that next? If you own a pet that sheds a lot or are a non-house-cleaning slob, is your warranty voided next?

Glad my iPOD is still working, I can see that Apple can make something that works for more than year if they want to, even if you don't clean it daily.

I once had to work in an office that was now non-smoking, but had been used by heavy-smoking reporters for 40 years. Everything was slightly sticky and stained yellow. Even things brought in after the smoking ban developed a tinge after a year. I was only in there for a day or so, but I can certainly see how things could stop working properly.

So way to void your warranty number 1 is "be responsible for the breakage" but you want to argue that getting your machine caked with toxic garbage isn't your responsibility... I'm sorry but this is the typical response of a smoker whose addiction prevents them from accepting the facts of their habit. They might as well have dropped a deuce in their cases as far as the repair tech is concerned.

Lightweight!! A guy I worked with had a $5500+/- whiskey and cigarette habit annually. That was 2-3 packs a day and a gallon of whiskey every 2 to 3 days. The hazard to his computer was drunken porn surfing.

Such as coating the insides of the computer with tar to the point where it overheats and dies? Apple's "health hazard" line is pure crap, but the reality of tar buildup inside a computer that cools itself using a fan or fans is real. Intentionally operating a computer in an environment that shortens its lifespan should not be covered under warranty.
