See, now that worked in my head when I did it, but now it just feels wrong. Hearing it on TSN just messes me up. I keep thinking it's saturday.

Well that probably isn't going to suck!

I can't wait to hear that.

And it's gotta be better than the CBC's abomination they're still trying to shove down our throats after they lost the true "theme of hockey!"

Someone please post the internet high five for us.

Much obliged.

The new one doesn't bug me at all. It can't replace the original, but it's good and if they did it to save some money I'm ok with that.

They didn't have the budget to broadcast Vancouver's playoff games in HD, so local businesses had to pay for it

Matt Foley 2009-11-20 05:12:27 PM
No one can destroy a good thing quite like TSN/CTV. I'm by no means implying the CBC is perfect, but they certainly didn't whore out that song and their exclusive broadcasting rights to the Olympics quite like TSN does, and is willing to do.

And NO, www.ctvolympics.ca, I will NOT download and install Microsoft Silverlight just to watch your shiatty interviews with potential olympians.

zez 2009-11-20 05:17:06 PM
Why is he recording it? I don't think there were any drums at all in the original.

JosephFinn 2009-11-20 05:24:47 PM
Can't they just use the version with Terrence and Phillip and Geddy Lee on the South Park movie soundtrack?

Original Hockey night in Canada theme, circa 1965. They played with the arrangement a bit once in a while, but this is the basic score.

Wow, the new one is, as Charles Barkley would say, TURRIBLE.

Nunky 2009-11-20 05:58:33 PM
And I'm still pissed that CBC did not pony up to pay for the rights to the original song. I can't verify the claim, but I believe it was the longest continious use of a theme in TV show, being -the- song played from 1968-2008 every Saturday night.

Even if it wasn't the longest, 40 years of history does something.

mikaloyd [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-11-20 06:06:49 PM
Mark my words. If somebody does not terminate Nicklelback with great prejudice soon then CTV will surely encourage them to record a version of the song as well. possibly with Celine Dion "helping" on vocals. If that happens TSN could have another brain fart and choose Nickleback's version to play at every damned hockey game they broadcast for the next 35 years. Is that a risk you people are willing to take

maybe they'll be able to buy it back one day in the near future, CTV has a lot of debt they won't be able to afford

Well that's cool, and I only like a few Rush songs.

Blink 2009-11-20 06:15:32 PM
Having known a few crazed Rush fans in college and after constant forced exposure to said band -- I reached the inevitable conclusion that Rush Sucks like Paris Hilton on prom night. I sometimes theorized that the instrumental aspect might not be all that bad -- but the screeching -- my god the heinousness of that voice. Like a really want to experience the sensation of a 100 mosquitoes buzzing around my head for entertainment.

I thought the "real" national anthem was the usual one with "O Canada!" replaced by "Ow My Balls Hurt!"

yeah, uhhh...

www.lighthouseavenue.com

Some of us don't think hours of non-stop overdrumming qualifies as music.

Neil Peart sleeps with a copy of Atlas Shrugged under his pillow. So, like all enthusiastically overachieving objectivists, he is convinced that his genius is unmatched and selfishly drenches his inane prattle over everything that Rush does.

This is a stupid idea, and TSN will pay for it.

That's just it. As a public broadcaster, there is no way they could justify shelling out that much money for a theme song.

The old one is great, and the new one is not bad. In 20 years, much like the old song, the new one will be the last minute warning that 'hockey's on.'

Agreed. Plus, the way that the rights-holders handled it was underhanded.

I'll admit that I'm still sore that CTV/TSN stole and raped this great song. The fact that the song has been a laughing stock for them thus far does make it a bit sweeter, though.

Is the theme song being used anywhere at this point?

If not, the rights holder made a huge mistake. Now, he's getting nothing.

Of course, when music and TV collide, most of the time the rights holders are greedy farks and the companies won't pay up, so everyone loses.

I like Rush but someone playing it on a flute would be just as cool. Maybe a girl over the age of 18. Yeah. That would be alright. I wonder what that might look like?

Cool!
