Unable to silence its biggest competitor, AT&T has no choice but to retort. Unfortunately, the carrier ends up looking like the one kid on the playground who can't come up with a good "yo' mama" joke.

They do have a choice. They can STFU and GBTW on fixing their crappy 3G network.

jaymzz [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-11-20 02:21:27 PM
Has anyone at AT&T actually looked into it? I had Verizon for years and all the red part means is that you can make a phone call there. Places like Bentonville, AR which is TOTALLY RED actually only has Verizon service AT THE AIRPORT. Everywhere else they are roaming on Sprint with NO DATA ACCESS AT ALL, let alone 3G.

Yeah, what a bunch of bullshiat. They have only one exclusive model that anybody has ever even heard of, and hardly anybody has one--it's certainly not "popular":

Assuming for the moment that "popular" was a valid comparison against "more, better 3G coverage", I'd say "Blackberry" is pretty popular. And gee, they're on every carrier.

I guess when you can't compare apples to apples, you just cry with whatever you've got.

Yes, that's right, they're on every carrier, so no particular carrier has bragging rights. But of those phones that are exclusive to one carrier or another, I'd say AT&T does indeed have some bragging rights, despite what the headline suggests.

God, see what you've made me do? You've made me defend goddamn AT&T, fer Chrissake. I feel dirty.

Cyberluddite: I'd say AT&T does indeed have some bragging rights, despite what the headline suggests.

The point I'm going for here is that if "we're popular" is the best response AT&T can come up with, well, that explains why Verizon is so far ahead.

brigid_fitch [TotalFark] 2009-11-20 03:18:23 PM
So, being able to browse the web & talk on the phone is actually important to some people? I can't recall ever having the urgent need to Google something while in the middle of a conversation.

brigid_fitch: So, being able to browse the web & talk on the phone is actually important to some people?

I guess to some people.

But that's the problem. Verizon came out with a side-by-side, apples-to-apples comparison about something relevant to a lot of wireless data users: 3G coverage. AT&T's "retort", if you can call it that, has required AT&T to dig so deep that this (and the "popularity" thing) are apparently the best they can do.

Apple iPhone is the best because it is the most popular, much like how Windows is the best because it's the most popular.

I've been on Sprint, Verizon, and now AT&T. As far as network coverage goes, Verizon has the best network, hands down. As far as quality phones go, Verizon has the best network, hands down. Also I live in an area that has good 3G coverage for my iPhone, so the map doesn't bother me.

brigid_fitch: So, being able to browse the web & talk on the phone is actually important to some people? I can't recall ever having the urgent need to Google something while in the middle of a conversation.

Let me qualify this by saying, I have Verizon and I don't even feel the need to have internet on my phone.

But when I'm on the phone with people and I'm in front of a computer, things come up in conversation that I can look up right there. My girlfriend calls me looking for the name of a song, my buddy calls me for directions somewhere, or simply we get to talking about something and neither of us is sure about a bit of information and I turn to the computer and find out so we can continue the conversation without sounding like idiots.

So I could see if I had a hands-free set and I could go online during the conversation even though I'm not at home sitting at my computer, it would be a great benefit.

furiousxgeorge: Apple iPhone is the best because it is the most popular, much like how Windows is the best because it's the most popular.

That's a good observation. I hadn't thought of applying AT&Tlogic (tm) like this. Say, Verizon has more subscribers than anyone else.

Therefore, Verizon Wireless is the best wireless carrier because they're the most popular.

What's interesting is that a lot of Droid users are saying "Uh, yeah, I was browsing the Web on my Droid while talking on my Droid this morning, so ..." Not having a droid I can not confirm this, but I can absolutely, positively, 100% confirm that my Q on Verizon Wireless would receive emails while I was on phone calls.

Doesn't AT&T kind of have a point? The Verizon maps don't include their EDGE network, only the HSPDA, both which meets the definition of 3G?

I am here hoping someone is going to show up and defend AT&T. The last thread we had dedicated to this had some true retards. Most of them confused the red map from the ad with the red map on Verizon's web page.

Because, you know, they're both red. Here's a tip: the ad map is red, but on Verizon's web page it's actually blue/green.

Blackberry has a large number of different models. The iPhone only currently has two. On a per-model basis, the iPhone is the highest selling iPhone. Not sure it really matters, though.

Yes, and that is the point. There is a lack of consistency with the definition of 3G because it is a marketing term and not a technical term.

Really AT&T has handled this horribly wrong. All they had to do was to clarify the definitions/speeds of the networks and show a map that included the EDGE network.

I just tested with my droid - While on a call I can browse if I'm connected to a wifi net, but not via cellular data connection.

Also, to jaymzz - I've recently traveled in Bentonville and had good coverage. I'd guess your experience is prior to the completion of the Alltel merger? I'm heritage alltel (employee), so I have no idea what the original VZ network was like there, but they (we- still getting used to that...) bought a pretty robust Alltel network in the NW Arkansas areaand merged it in.

2008, before I went to T-mobile... which, since they have a roaming agreement with AT&T, does have coverage. If so then they can paint the map red there.

Do keep in mind that part of the map was just as red in 2008. Just because it's red doesn't mean you will get 3G coverage if you are on Verizon. It's never meant that. I think AT&T should explore that, because I bet it's still true, if not in Bentonville then surely in other places.

Today I called AT&T to terminate my service. All in all, the lady was very nice and helpful and I left AT&T without a horrible taste in my mouth.

But I did say that I had switched to Verizon and got a Droid. She said, "Oh? You mean I can't help you get an iPhone? Maybe we can get you to come back and get an iPhone"

I didn't say, but there's no way in hell an iPhone could replace my droid, and AT&T doesn't have a phone that comes close to it.

If that's the best they can do, then I don't regret leaving.

I'm no fanboy and I'm sure there are reasons for some to prefer an iPhone. For me, it's not even close.

That's not on Verizon either, is it?

I want to get a smartphone in a few months when I can get the upgrade, but i don't want to switch from Verizon for a number of reasons.

I'd consider the iPhone or the Pre, but neither of them are on Verizon, so oh well. Probably I'll get one of the new Droid phones.

Plus the thing that makes me nervous about the Pre is that it seems uncertain how long Palm is going to stay in business. And I'm not sure it would get the same kind of developer support (in terms of apps and stuff) that the iPhone or Android phones are going to get.

Oh, oh! We must be playing the game of Can You Spot Who Didn't RTFA?

TFA: Most Popular Smartphones

This needs to be singular, or explained better. If we're talking about the most popular smartphones exclusive to AT&T, that leaves the iPhone. Blackberry phones are the most popular in the United States, but Verizon carries them, too. And it's got a relevant AT&T-bashing ad.

The Palm Pre totally blows all these other phones out of the water.

It's open source, for one, and Palm encourages people to modify the hell out of it.

It has the fastest processor out of any of the smart phones, and can handle multi-tasking pretty well (you can browse the web and text message and get directions w/ sprint navigation all while on a call if you really want to).

Sprint's unlimited data/texting/mobile-to-mobile (any network) plan is something like $65 before taxes. I pay like $85 with the protection plan

It has a full qwerty keyboard, no touch screen bs (unless you want one, then there's an easy hack to get an on screen keyboard)

I get 3g reception everywhere I go, and wifi almost everywhere. Speed on the 3g network is around 800 kbps according to mobilespeedtest.com. I don't know if that's average for 3g networks, but it sounds damn fast for a phone to me.

I could go on. I love this phone so much.
