Cool story, bro time: I went to the theatre last night to see Where the Wild Things Are. When it let out at 10pm, there must have been about 100 giggling girls camped out in the lobby. So I grabbed a clipboard that was lying by the office window, went up to the front of the line, and told them I was the general manager and we never received our copy of New Moon for the midnight showing.

The look of abject horror on their faces was GLORIOUS.

Is it a problem with them that a 100+ year old dude wants to bang a high school chick and somehow that is just "romantic"...

Chris Hansen would like Edward Cullen to have a seat over there...

Or is it that the very old man wants to bang a chick and not a young boy?

Where is the condemnation really coming from?

For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.

The Roman Catholic Church has expressed concerns over the growing popularity of the Twilight movies - Vatican officials have called the vampire franchise a "moral vacuum with a deviant message".

To be fair, they're right. Not that it's really their business, but the movies/books have no redeeming value, and their portrayal of love is awful.

This is interesting, one of my friends is writing her final paper for her Anthropology course about the transformation of Vampires in popular culture over the last few decades. The Twilight series marks a substantial shift from the vampire symbolizing sexuality, to something more akin to celibacy. That's kind of the point of those terrible books, after all. The Vatican is missing the point, as usual.

Wollffeey 2009-11-20 03:58:49 PM
Wait wait wait. I thought the main theme of the Twilight series was chastity. I mean, Bella and Edward don't get it on until they're married in the 4th book. Where the fark is the moral vacuum in all this?

/Perhaps if the protagonists had been two males, the Vatican would have thought it was okay.

Maybe their saying that dating a guy who emotionally abuses you is wrong? Probably not, but that's good enough reason to condemn these stories.

I haven't read the books, did not see the first movie, but I did take my niece and two of her friends to last night Showing of New Moon. From the movie I learned that Bella is young woman that will give up her soul, her family and friends, and another guy that loves her for someone who is going to take away her humanity. Not only that but she was willing to take life threatening risks just to see man. Not really a good example for young girls IMO.

A ripoff of The Vampire Diaries, which was was in turn a rip off of Interview with a Vampire, which was in turn a rip off of Bram Stoker's Dracula, which was in turn a rip off of Varney the Vampire, (repeat ad infinitum) with older and older bloodsucking creature stories.

However, people still drink his blood after the fact, so symbolically or not they are drinking the blood of an undead individual.

Meh. I'll stay on course with my opinion. I'm not going to read the books or see the films (except for maybe with Rifftrax), but I'm glad that kids today have something that is theirs, and not some stale remake/sequel of something that was cool when I was a kid. Unfortunately that's a rarity in the movies.

They didn't even cover the best part...see, Bella gets pregnant with said vampire baby and she hasn't turned into a vampire yet. During the birth the baby kicks and breaks her spine and oh yeah, she's transformed enough that the only way to get through the placenta is...wait for it...for Edward to bite through it! Beautiful!

lol.

I can deal with a magical artifact or just being really old and powerful that allows a vamp to walk around during the day.

Oh, and there are better metaphors for powerful auras than "sparkles".

If those movies are considered "morally deviant" I wonder how they'd review Dogma and Life of Brian

I love how "obscure Vatican official expresses concerns" is equivalent to "Vatican condemns".
