He left the island in the mid-1980s, but would return a couple times a year either with his power boat or van and would usually leave a swath of trouble in his wake.

What a weird sentence.

The RCMP said it had not ruled out foul play in the death of Tempest
(Pest) Grace Gale. She was a gardener, musician, poet, unicyclist, and
stilt-walker.

Stilt-walker? I think we have isolated the problem.

yeah, really. vans don't leave a wake so it is quite senseless.

so you have to have enough evidence to arrest and hold somebody in order to call them a 'suspect'? I had no idea 'suspect' was such a technical legal term.

Dunno about Canada, but in the US there have been several lawsuits over being publicly named as a suspect - Richard Jewell comes to mind - especially since I'm sitting across the street from Centennial Olympic Park as I type this.

So the guy drove his van quickly through the streets? Sounds pretty sinister. Oh maybe it was because he was in a boys home when he was younger.

The only other thing I see is where he was on the lookout for the parents of the boys who sprayed his boat with coke. Vigilantism.

Never mind, of course, the town resident saying he better not comeback because someone will take the law into their own hands. This guy sure sounds like a problem alright.

Actually according TFA he suspected that the parents of the dead girl were the ones who sprayed his van with cola.
I agree though, that the behaviours described in the article make him sound like a weirdo, not a killer. The gulf islands here are full of weirdos.

Her given name was Grace Marie Gale. I guess you could call Tempest a "stage" name, but she was a pretty theatrical person. Tempest evolved from Pest, what she was calling herself when she was a bit younger. Tempest Grace Gale was a performer: she wrote music and poetry, rode a unicycle, yes, walked on stilts, often in costume, made masks, marionettes and sculpture made of found objects, performed in a band called the Killer Bagels with her parents, as well as solo and with other musicians. She lived on a boat docked near the boat where her parents lived. She was gentle, kind, generous, opinionated, talented, open-hearted, fierce.
I knew her first as a smuggled watermelon inside her mom. She played with my son for years.
Her parents, Jazzmyre (no, not her given name either) Corrigan and Michael Gale, are shattered at her loss. They all make a serious (well, often humorous, actually) effort to be peaceful with everyone.
The angry man had many imaginary grievances. He accused Jazz and Michael of spraying his boat with Coca-Cola (?!?). As for "driving fast in the 'street'," there aren't any "streets" there--just little twisty country roads, where driving "fast" may mean running around a bend into bicyclists and pedestrians.
Jazz and Michael went to spend the night with friends because they were afraid of what the angry guy might do. They warned their daughter, but she was not afraid.
Her boyfriend started calling around in the morning early to find out where she was after he found her mug broken on the dock.
He found her body in the water, and her dad came about then too.
The autopsy "indicated" she was murdered, but the RCMP hasn't said more.
It is hard to think that the person who hurt her is loose in the world, while we are grieving for her.
We don't know if it was the angry guy who hurt her. He was arrested on the first ferry off the island the morning her body was found, but released the next day. The police may never be able to prove what happened, but Tempest Grace is never coming back.
I wish I could be there to hug her mom, my friend, but I know she has GOOD friends there--the family made good friends wherever they went.
I made some calls notifying people in Oregon and California about what had happened, because Jazz was too torn up. It was terribly hard, even for me. Tempest Grace Gale was a memorable person, and touched many lives.
