Not to mention that it's better coffee on top of it.

Yeah, I went there. Take it from a real-life supertaster: Starbucks over-roasts their beans to the point of absurdity. Why anyone would pay as much as they do for their crap has always been completely beyond me.

Hardly. They are equally deficient in different ways.

I've never understood why people get so smug and uptight about hot bean juice.

This is true in the same sense that you can get a case of Bud Light for the same price as a 12 pack of Bell's Two Hearted Ale.

I'm not saying Starbuck's is the end-all of coffee, but it sure beats the hell out of Folger's, which was probably ground 3 months before it ever made it to your grocery store.

Hey now. $5 buys me two Americanos. GRANDE Americanos.

And while I'm too lazy to look it up, I'm willing to bet that Bud Light sales are similarly up over Bell's when compared to the same period.

The point being, you see, that in times of need, selectivity goes out the window.

Kind of like when it's been awhile since you got any, you're a LOT more willing to hook up with the 'meh' girl from the local coffeeshop, but once you do, you rediscover 'standards', and only that super-hot PhD candidate MBA who runs QA will do for you.

/or whatever

And I can get 2 cases of Glueck's Honey Bock for the price of 1 case of Budwiser. Top shelf taste at generic prices.

Ha ha ha! It's good to be in Minnesota.... For once.

Hot damn we're getting a Beer/Coffee Snob Two-Fer Thread!

Coffee should be hot, black and heavily caffeinated. Anything else is pretense. Now, I must get back to my Kopi Luwak^ Triple Caf Mocha Latte with cinnamon sprinkles.

just2quixotic 2009-11-20 12:14:40 PM

You guys are thinking of Starbucks all wrong. Don't think of it as coffee, think of it as liquid candy. (All that milk and sugar, coffee is only a tiny portion of what goes into your Starbuck's cup.)

Espresso is concentrated coffee. I don't see why putting the two in the same camp is a failure.

impaler, you don't seem to be paying attention to what people are saying here. You are factually incorrect. Espresso is coffee. If you think we are incorrect about this assertion, kindly take it up with the people who publish the Meriam Webster dictionary or perhaps the people at coffeeresearch.org (or a dozen other institutions that deal with coffee.)

Meriam Webster:

espresso
One entry found.

Main Entry: espres·so
Pronunciation: \e-ˈspre-(ˌ)sō\
Variant(s): also ex·pres·so \ik-ˈspre-(ˌ)sō\
Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural espres·sos
Etymology: Italian (caffè) espresso, probably literally, coffee made on the spot at the customer's request
Date: 1945

1 : coffee brewed by forcing steam or hot water through finely ground darkly roasted coffee beans

CoffeeResearch.org

Espresso coffee brewing is defined by four "M's": the Macinazione is the correct grinding of a coffee blend, Miscela is the coffee blend, Macchina is the espresso machine, and Mano is the skilled hand of the barista. When each factor of the four M's is precisely controlled, the espresso beverage that is produced is the ultimate coffee experience.

For $10 you can get a pound of high-quality beans and grind them up yourself. Cheap, and you don't have to drink Folger's.

I'm not a snob, but that stuff is just nasty.

Yeah, but Folgers sucks.

I enjoy my Starbucks and my Tim Hortons. Simply because you are too poor to do the same, doesn't mean you should bother me, submitter. Pooh, pooh to your working-class blathering.

Maxwell House Master Blend for the win. Only a buck more expensive than the Folger's junk, makes good coffee.

I've never even been in a Starbucks.

I'll drink some pretty vile swill if it's free, so I have no reason to really even entertain the notion of expensive coffee.

Ugh, I find Folgers to be gross and Starbucks confuses dark roast with burnt. Also their non-espresso coffee sits in a heated urn for a while and scorches. Cosi has the same problem. Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds coffee will do in a pinch, but I don't go out of my way for it.

Honestly, I like the coffee at 7-11 or Wawa. It's a decent blend and those pots are on constant rotation.

I'll eat a sugar cube that's wicked up some espresso or make a chocolate cake with lots of espresso. Lots of sugar or chocolate and lots of sugar makes coffee palatable.

But coffee straight up? It's like drinking bile.
