Someone should make a "the many different expressions of Micheal Cera" picture.

They filmed some of this movie in my hometown last summer. Apparently, the trailer park behind my old subdivision was movie worthy. Who knew?

Cera....i don't get it.

How old do you have to be before you aren't allowed to play an awkward teenager?

With the exception of Adam Sandler, where has the mark been set?

/Genuinely curious

That was the funniest maturation novel I ever read in my damned life. Of course, I read it as a horny bookish teen. Who used to love cupcakes.

I don't suppose the article could have listed the cities. Thanks, guys.

I first read that book about 10 years ago, and I've probably read it 6 times since. Funniest novel ever. I hope the film does it justice.

I thought his performance in Arrested Development was a perfect fit for the show and his character, its unfortunate that I only later found out he wasn't actually acting in the first place.

/he poisons every movie he's in and not even Jason Bateman can save them.
//who ironically is another guy that seems to have graduated from the nic cage school of acting

connacht: michael cera is jesse eisenberg is michael cera....

I don't understand this comparison. Sure they both play ackward teenagers right now, but I can see Jessie Eisenberg actually growing out of that role in a few years. Cera never could have pulled off The Squid and the Whale. Hell, I don't think he could have even done Zombieland.

Micheal Cera is a character actor, and his character is "Micheal Cera". He was hilarious in Arrested Development, but that is pretty much teh extent of his range.

PsychoLaurie 2009-11-20 12:11:16 PM
I saw this at the Hawaii Intl Film Fest two weeks ago + it was pretty funny, even if Michael Cera is typecast as Michael Cera.

Actually reminded me of Fight Club + Napolean Dynomite rolled into one. It's definitely worth seeing.

GladGirl 2009-11-20 12:11:39 PM
Great goddamn book. I always imagined someone a little more ADD and unpredictable than Michael Cera playing the lead role, though. Not sure he's capable of that range.

wolvernova [TotalFark] 2009-11-20 12:19:17 PM
Deadpan acting. It's okay when Bill Murray does it, but apparently not when the new guy does it.

Yeah, but Murray occasionally throws in weird performance like Caddyshack. Cera has yet to do that.
He really needs to find a role as a villain or a junkie or something, just to prove to the world that he can do it.

I just saw Adventureland last week and said to my girlfriend "So, Michael Cera wasn't available for the role?" But yeah, I think Eisenberg hints at a bit more range, which I'll probably think moreso when I get around to Zombieland and The Squid and the Whale.

/Still like Cera too

acaciaavenue 2009-11-20 01:12:06 PM
Michael Cera was vacationing in Zombieland, which is why he wasn't able to be in Adventureland.

honestly, I thought Michael Cera was in Adventureland until we saw the other Michael Cera. Ditto Zombieland.

Year One became a lot more tolerable when I started pretending it was really just a collection of Mr. Show sketches.

Someone with Photoshop skills needs to make an image like the "Three Different Movies" one that shows up in Nicholas Cage threads for Michael Cera's films.

I just read Youth in Revolt about a month ago and had no idea they were turning it into a movie. That book was fantastic, I really grew to care for the characters even though they were all complete dicks. The third act was completely implausible, but I really couldn't have cared less.

That said, I can't see Michael Cera playing Nick... he's too timid. Nick was a borderline sociopath.

He's got that soft, feminine look that appeals to middle-aged men that like to ... try things. Ah who am I kidding, put two beers into me and I'd do you both.

I disagree with a few of above comments. I thought the book was terrible. Perfect for Michael Cera though

Dredge 2009-11-21 03:55:17 AM
Cera is cool. The "he has no range" argument doesn't really stick because he has only done a handful of movies (granted - Paper Heart looked painful).

Cera also writes a bunch of his own material - very naturally funny guy. His appearances on Letterman are great.

I like that he is the only member of Arrested Development who didn't want to return for the movie. The rest are just trying to cash in and a movie isn't necessary - the three seasons are perfect and the movie won't live up to the standard they set for the show.

If you haven't seen them, btw, check out www.clarkandmichael.com - funny stuff.
