(Kotaku) Interesting This is a test. This game system is conducting a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test. If this had been an actual Koopa attack, you would have been instructed to find power-ups   (kotaku.com) divider line 39

Tornado or not, I'm still getting to the next save spot.

"Yeah yeah yeah, can you now get that farking force-pushed message of my screen so I can save my game before the tsunami hits? I did NOT slog my way here from the last save point 45 minutes ago to just shut down my system and run!"

sbf2009 2009-11-20 09:24:07 AM
I don't like it.

sbf2009: I don't like it.

Well, from my viewpoint as a staunch social-darwinist, I feel that it is only timely that people ignore PSA's die a fiery/watery/locusty/windy/earthquaky death. But to use this in order to reach people who can't get any other form of warning, audibly or visually, then it's a good thing.

You deserve exactly one warning, but that's it.

Well won't they already be in their parents basement anyway?

Meepzoid 2009-11-20 09:39:59 AM
I wonder if they'll be game-specific:

"Find your way to the nearest Clucking Bell. Order the Big Clucker. Body armer is hidden under the bridge."

"StimPaks are on the top shelf. Scav dead Ghouls for ammo."

Well I think this just about sums it up.

I already can hear disaster sirens from my house
/No need for this

Nemo's Brother 2009-11-20 10:05:54 AM
I would much rather face a tornado or army of Red over an army of man-eating giant turles and Goombas

I Like Bread 2009-11-20 10:11:59 AM
It would certainly make playing Silent Hill more confusing.

They made an announcement of a goomba attack, but the last I heard things were quiet in Little Italy.

The emergency broadcast won't be a bad thing. The weekly mandated testing on the other hand will be an annoyance. It will really suck, because while they are running a test on your system in NY, the guy in Japan is now tea bagging your dead avatar.

For some reason the thought of a massive koopa attack makes me smile

God dammit, now I have "Jungle Boogie" in my head.

I Said [TotalFark] 2009-11-20 12:16:41 PM
I think it's a good move. Face it, most of us are far more engrossed in a game (especially if you have headphones one) than we are watching TV or listening to the radio.

So if there's a serious emergency, this is necessary.

JackDAndCoke 2009-11-20 12:27:15 PM
Too many PSA's on our news network are "Flood Watch" or "Severe Thunderstorm Warning". That would bug the hell out of me if I had "Tornado Watch" scrolling across the screen on a rainy day.

I'd be more bugged if I was just about to win a round with a knife kill and got sucked into the air by a f*cking tornado.

just hope the EBS doesn't cause a system restart or something.

Wouldn't you know something was up when the power cut out, or does everyone else have their PS3 on a battery back up too?

lordargent 2009-11-20 02:00:08 PM
Cornwell: Well, from my viewpoint as a staunch social-darwinist, I feel that it is only timely that people ignore PSA's

The problem with most PSA systems is that they are not granular enough.

For example.

I live on the side of a foothill. Yet, when it rains heavily, I get flood warnings for another part of the county that's about 25 miles north of me, and at least 90 feet closer to sea level (and a river runs through it).

For them, a flash flood warning can be a lifesaver. They're on a nice wide expanse of flat land. For me, it's nothing but an extremely annoying intrusion.

/what's worse is when a flood warning gets issued while I'm at work. I get home 5 hours later to watch a show that I recorded on my tivo, and there's a damned flood warning in the middle of the recording (it's not even raining anymore damnit).

Foaming [TotalFark] 2009-11-20 03:09:12 PM
All the characters in the game should go into complete panic mode when this happens.

Just let them interrupt someone's game and watch the flood of whining begin.

is everyone forgetting that most games autosave every 3 seconds/15 feet now? if your shiat gets shut off, you'll probly be fine. then again i didn't rtfa nor am i very awake right now.

It just broadcasts a warning, nothing else.

Also; the only games I've played in the past several months where it autosaved only did it when you walked into a room, or entered a separate area (Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Neverwinter Nights 2).

/Making 'autosave' merely mean "Cheap death preventer. Your fault for not taking a rogue along, stupid meatshield."

I figure for 360 and PS3 it could easily work with the friend systems they already have set up. Instead of >AZzraMmeR69

It could tell you what warning/watch is going on (and why the fark did it cut off half my post?)

Nem Wan 2009-11-20 08:17:33 PM
I'm OK with this is if it only interrupts to warn for my area. The mandatory EAS on my DVR drives me nuts during a storm because the cable company covers a fairly large area and when there's a warning anywhere in their service area the DVR goes to the EAS channel.

Aw, you got me. I was expecting to read about someone who doesn't know a thing about video games flipping out and screaming about invading commies after catching a few seconds of that loading video in Call of Grenades: Modern Grenades 2.

It's a pretty solid idea that will probably save a whole lot of lives. With my luck though, I'll be playing the latest Eternal Darkness. "ha, that's pretty cool."

/I know there will never be another Eternal Darkness
//thank god there's still bastardized Silent Hill games coming out
///;_;

EBS over gaming networks and must have a plan to run across corp and private networks (gotta warn the WOW players and net addicts) which MUST have some form of location awareness, and it's being called "Empire 2.0"?!?!

Hell, I can see the New World Order sites surpassing bat-shaite insane already.
