Q: What do West Virginians do on Halloween?
A: They pump kin.

This. Not to mention they're probably cheaper by the pound as well. A sweet potato that's baked in foil until mushy, then topped with almond butter and pumpkin spice tastes similar to pumpkin pie.

Nestle is the largest national brand for canned pumpkin products, with 80 to 90 percent of the market, the company said.

And this is what's wrong with our food system. When one company becomes the bulk majority producer of a product, anything that goes wrong at that company can produce a nationwide shortage. Here it's Nestle and pumpkin filling, the other day it was Eggo and waffles. Look at the shelves at the grocery store. For a given product you typically have one or two 'brand' choices and maybe a store 'brand'.

In some cases, the choice of brand is just an illusion. The brands end up being owned by the same parent company so they aren't really competing with each other. If either manage to get into your wallet, it's a win for the company.

/and what most brands are selling ends up being sugar coated penis
//and you keep going back for more

I don't know about the other areas of the midwest but here in central IL the weather has been working against all the farmers. By now all of the crops would have been picked but I think to date only half of the fields have been harvisted (corn, soy, and punkins). I have heard that a lot of the elevators in the area have shortened their hours because they cannot keep taking all of marginally wet harvest, they just cannot dry it fast enough, so that when a farmer is able to access some of their fields they cannot offload it. This has been a bad year to be a farmer around here.

It is neat to watch them offload the trucks at the Morton plant. They have tiltbeds that take fully loaded open toped trailers, a truck drops off the trailer, the trailer gets tipped to about a 45deg incline and the pumpkins just explode out the back.

thank god subby didn't say the pumpkins were ruined because it was raining men...because that would have been a REAL earworm...
