What does something have to look like to qualify as art? The Gates transformed Central Park for a short time, and changed the relationship between the viewer and his/her environment. Sounds like art to me.

Now if we could just get rid of Christo too perhaps we would no longer have to be subjected to any more mind-bogglingly pretentious justifications for covering shiat with tarps.

By the way, The Gates was a massive ripoff. It was a obvious but poor copy of the Fushimi-Inari shrine in Kyoto, but he tried to pass it off as an original.

I think you mean- "Just because it's art doesn't mean it's amazing". If someone says something is art, then it is. But, you don't have to like it.

So does planting a burning cross on someone's yard. Is that art?

Since he put up the money himself, I'm willing to give him a pass wherever he got the idea.

You are confusing archetypes with stereotypes.

I did too. It was part of her charm.

Jean Claude is pretty unassuming and a lot of their projects wouldn't have happened if he didn't have the partner/wife/bulldozer to push it through.

It is art because they say it is. Amazing has nothing to do with it. "Amazing" is what you bring to it.

They just brought art.

RminusQ:

If the person planting the cross says it is art than yes. It is art.

I have never understood why people find such a simple concept so difficult to understand.

Among the things I have long admired about Christo and his wife is that they don't take public funding for their projects, never have.

Another is that they take HUGE risks with their work and yet, when they are over, there's little or nothing left to see there - the gates were free-standing and left not even a stake hole in the ground.

I hope that he can pull off the Arkansas River project in Colorado now that she's gone. Just let me see one more of his works please!

My husband was a HUGE fan of Christo before meeting the couple about 8 years ago. He came home with a story of how bad it sucks when you find out one of your idols is a dick.
