Their big thing right now is pushing the new instant coffee packs, which manages to combine all the worst things about coffee with the all the worst things about Starbucks. I'm sorry, but if I'm resorting to instant, I'm grabbing a Sanka packet.

Seriously?

I don't mind Starbucks coffee... mainly, because I get it for free. My girlfriend works there and I'm the beneficiary of some of the free lbs. of coffee she can take home. That being said, when I do get a cup of coffee, I ask them to water it down a bit b/c otherwise it is very strong and bitter.

I don't mind the instant coffee, it's great in milkshakes or when I want a quick caffeine boost. I don't think I'd pay their full price though. That's outrageous.

It depends on the fungibility of Starbucks coffee. If they raise it enough to not alter consumer habits, it is all profit.

It's eggnog latte season, and I don't mind paying a few extra cents for a drink I only buy a couple of times a month.

Me too. In Conneticut or Nebraska or some other place nobody cares about. I could search, but... someone else will do it for me.

Anyways, I'm drinking a free McDonald's coffee right now, but I'm reminded of the delicious Eggnog latte I enjoyed at Starbucks last night. So my opinion is moot.

Came here to say this

Heist 2009-11-19 09:28:35 PM
Every Starbucks thread has the same complaints:

1. They're too expensive
2. Their coffee is overroasted

The alternative is inevitably to frequent "independent" coffee shops. As someone who goes to both Starbucks and independent coffee shops, I can vouch that all coffee shops have similar pricing. A 12oz coffee is $1.50 at Starbucks, you really think independent places can beat that? Hell, even McDonalds charges something like $1.35. Coffee shop beans are (almost) always dark roasted, and the coffee is (almost) always brewed strongly. If you want weak, watery coffee, you can go to Kroger and buy a 3 lb tub of Folgers for $8 and put 1 Tb of ground coffee for each cup you brew on your Mr. Coffee at home.

Which is totally fine. If you want terrible coffee, have at it. Just don't mask your preference for terrible coffee with elitist snobbery.

Heist 2009-11-19 09:30:15 PM
PS - You can't overbrew (or overroast) lattes and cappuccinos. They're made with espresso and steamed milk. The strength of the espresso depends primarily on how the espresso machines are calibrated.

Blind_Io 2009-11-19 09:37:40 PM
Roasting happens before the beans ever get ground or hit the espresso machine. It has nothing to do with the espresso machine.

bigfatdave 2009-11-19 09:38:01 PM
Heist: The alternative is inevitably to frequent "independent" coffee shops.

You missed an option.
[coffeesnob]What you need to do is go to your local independent roaster, get some beans done just right (I like a medium roast, myself), grind them yourself in a burr grinder as needed at home, and make good, simple coffee in a press-pot.[/coffeesnob]

Of course, I'm not hardcore enough for the real snobs, who order their beans un-roasted and roast coffee themselves.

Top-quality coffee runs about $12/# from my roaster, which is oddly in a bike shop ... when I walk in, at least the employees/owner know which counter I'm heading for!

pvd021 2009-11-19 09:50:04 PM
That's fine, stupid people don't know how to count, balance checkbooks, or understand the concept of a high APR. They can't while sipping that great coffee brewed from the finest beans, roasted with the greatest attention.

I've only been a coffee drinker for about 2 years now... started drinking the girly stuff you could barely taste the coffee in. Now I just go to the grocery store, put some of their roasted beans in a bag, grind them there at the store, bring it home and toss it in the fridge.

It's like $6/lb, lasts me about 2 weeks (I don't drink coffee every day), it's good enough for me, if I wanna go out and drink coffee in a shop I go to a local place that's kinda pricy but I like it.

I still am trying to figure out why it took so long for people to notice this. Me and a freind walked out of a SBUX in like 1994 going "man, that shiat tastes burnt, my homeslice" because that's the way we all talked back then. Then we got in our hoopty and drove to Jack in the Box.

Bingo. If your already paying $4.00 for a cappafrappawhatever without complaint, then you will probably pay $4.35, or even $4.75.

Faster then instant, better then drip, cleaner then French Press.

YEs, it's a bit more expensive, but my coffee is important and worth it.

And Timothy's Donut Shop Coffee is nearly perfect.

I'm sure you don't care, but I'll let you know politely before some asshat coffee nut flames you. Putting your coffee in the fridge or freezer will ruin it; every time you open the bag moisture will get in and the beans will lose its freshness. However, learning from a friend who owns a coffee shop, the best thing you could do is put the grinds in sealed containers portioned sized.

And now you know.

Blind_Io 2009-11-19 11:18:39 PM
The best coffee I ever had: Philz Coffee (new window), San Francisco.

The Ambrosia blend is aptly named. They even shipped some to my brother serving overseas; Phil included a personal handwritten thank you note for his service. I thought that was cool, and it made my brother's week (along with the awesome coffee).

No no, it's not Tim Horton's. Though I have contacted their coporate HQ begging for it. :-)

www.singleservecoffee.com

Timothy's is a well-known coffee roaster and producer. They were just bought by Green Mountain. They do a lot of different K-Cups, but Coffee Shop blend is my favorite. It tastes a lot like a DnD/timmy's cup.

The Coffee People also make a good one called Donut Shop, but I think it's just a bit too mild.

www.coffeepeople.com

The K-Cups are nice: if I want a dark blend, I just pull out a dark blend up and brew it. If grandmom wants tea, she can have tea (black or green with several blends). Brother hot chocolate (Dark, Light or White), mom flavored coffee (dozens - with more coming out monthly) and dad more mild brews. All with the same machine with no down time in between.

They cost about 50 cents a cup. I consider it a bargain after playing 1.75 daily in NY City for the same tasting thing.

Fjornir [TotalFark] 2009-11-20 12:50:09 AM
The work coffee machine serves up Starbucks. It is certainly over-roasted. I add milk to compensate. It gets me through the day.

About monthly I buy a latte or similar coffee drink. Usually from Starbucks. The reason: consistency. Yes, I know that MANY smaller coffer shops or espresso stands can give me better coffee. However unless when I happen to get the latter urge I am in a location where I am likely to get the latte-urge again at some future date it is not worth it to buy coffee from an unknown source.

Starbucks ain't the best but there is much much worse handed out regularly.

That new instant coffee of theirs is nasty.

It's the same freeze dried shiat you get in grocery stores, but they add 'microground' coffee to it as well. I think the 'microground' coffee is nothing more than grinding room sweepings that some one decided to use and make money off of. It's adds a grittiness to the coffee and will leave a ring around the cup your drinking from.

The douchbag I sit next to at work loves it.

I didn't really notice this. It seemed to stir up a bit better, and had a little more flavor than the regular super-cheap instant coffee I usually get. Price aside, it seems pretty good to me.

On the other hand, I add so much flavor syrup and sugar to my instant coffee that I don't care how the coffee itself tastes, so I have no need for their overpriced packets.

Or you could buy a very small 4 cup (20oz total capacity) coffee maker like I did. Every '3 cup' pot I make is about enough to fill up my coffee mug. I put in the coffee of my choosing from a local roaster and brew one cup before work every day. Tastes much better than Folgers and is very quick. Plus it's probably cheaper even though I'm buying specialty coffee.
