Perhaps, but I wonder how many wins Wainwright or Carpenter would've had if they had been pitching for the Giants instead of the Cards? And how many would Timmy have had if he'd had someone even remotely as good as Albert Pujols in his lineup to provide some run support?

To be fair, Carpenter and Timmy's run support were only separated by .01, but Timmy's still the best, and will be for some time to come.

Yeah, the guy only led the NL in strikeouts, came close to leading in NL in both wins (while playing for a team with no office) and ERA, and had opponents' hitterz bat all of .206 against him for the season, all at the ripe old age of 23. And all he managed to do is become the first pitcher ever to win the Cy Young in both of his first two full seasons in the majors.

You're right, it's laughable to consider a marginal, unimpressive pitcher like that as the league's best.

I'm glad he took up pitching because he was a shiat actor.

Why is he always touching his nose in that movie?

0/10

it must be even nicer to pitch knowing that if you give up 3 runs, you're going to lose. and its even nicer to be completely wrong, given that the Giants were in contention until the last week of the season.

My beliefs on baseball awards:

Writers complain about increasing salaries.
Writers vote for baseball awards for players.
Baseball players who get rewards make more money.
Baseball awards are used partly in baseball contracts.
Players use the writers awards for personal profit.
Young players use awards in arbitration to make more money.
Therefore writers raise salaries by giving awards.

So writers should select players who will potentially profit the least from awards but they don't. Carpenter should have won since he has the least to gain and because he was IMO the most dominate this season.

Cyberluddite [TotalFark] 2009-11-19 05:07:42 PM
jackiepaper: Carpenter and Timmy's run support were only separated by .01, but Timmy's still the best, and will be for some time to come.

Timmy pitched in a 5 or 6 blowout wins--probably the only 5 or 6 blowout wins the Giants had all season--which artifically skewed his season average run support numbers upwards. But in the majority of his losses or no-decisions, he only gave up a couple of runs, which is often enough to lose given the Giants' batting line-up.

Lloyd Braun 2009-11-19 05:08:23 PM

My question is this: How in the hell did Javier Vazquez get a 2nd place vote with Dan Haren getting a 3rd? Neither one of those guys is better than any single one the big 3 contenders.

My gosh, you're right, we should just disband the NL altogether.

World Series winners (new window) since 2000:

2000 New York Yankees
2001 Arizona Diamondbacks NL
2002 Anaheim Angels
2003 Florida Marlins NL
2004 Boston Red Sox
2005 Chicago White Sox
2006 St. Louis Cardinals NL
2007 Boston Red Sox
2008 Philadelphia Phillies NL
2009 New York Yankees

Yeah, the AL won 6 out of the last 10 World Series...sounds like the NL should just quit.

So, don't let the facts get in the way of you making idiotic statements about baseball...

Oh, and Wainwright was robbed...

Chastain86: Wainright was robbed. For serious.

How, exactly? Because Lincecum had fewer wins? Lincecum beat him in ERA, WHIP, ERA+, H/9, HR/9, K/9, and K/BB ratio. In fact, he destroyed Wainwright in most of those categories.

The only thing Wainwright has on Lincecum is 4 more wins, 7.2 more IP, and his 2.5 BB/9 beats Lincecum's 2.7.

So, again; how exactly was Wainwright robbed?

Well, the AL has taken 6 of the last 10 World Series, and also also 9 of the last 14. And then there's the AL's complete dominance in Interleague Play. And how the numbers of players who go from the AL to the NL get demonstrably better, and how the reverse is demonstrably not true (see: Holliday, Matt).

Oh, and Wainwright was robbed...

Um, no. Get a brain, moran. Lincecum was demonstrably better.

Say Carpenter was robbed instead.

I'd still have given it to Lincecum, but you could make a better argument for Carpenter than Wainwright, I think.

Carpenter had more wins, lower ERA and lower WHIP. Bogus award is bogus.
