The fact the man can find work at all shows there is no God. Or that Ferrell's agent is the Devil himself!

For every dollar Ferrell was paid, his films earned an average $3.29. Compare that to Shia LaBeouf, who topped our list of Best Actors for the Buck in August. For every dollar LaBeouf was paid, his films earned an average $160.

this isn't a really fair comparison because farrell draws all of those ticket sales, while labouf is just somehow cast in ready-made blockbusters. no-one is going to transformers or indiana jones just because he's in it.

The slideshow called DiCaprio "the young actor." He's 35.

This. They should have used earnings as a percentage of cost. For example, if an actor gets $1m out of a $20m budget and the film gets $100m worldwide, he is responsible for $5m of revenue.

The list would be remarkably different, I think.

True, but Ferrell's last few films have tanked. People are finally getting tired of his Shtick: self absorbed arrogant duffus who at some point in the film goes topless to show off gut.

yeah the pattern i've noticed is that when he tries to completely carry a movie, it gets panned as garbage. when he surrounds himself with an ensemble to give the audience a break from his shtick, his movies are much better.

I have to say, and I'm going to be crucified for this, I like Ferrell and his movies.

Granted, I haven't seen the Land of the Lost or whatever that last one was.

But I love Anchorman, Step Brothers and Talladega Nights. I also liked Stranger Than Fiction.

And You're Welcome America, One Last Night With George W. Bush was awesome.

I think he is funny. Sue me.

that would be a more reasonable metric, but you'd probably have a lot of small budget niche market people like tyler perry and larry the cable guy at the top of the best value list.

another qualitative benefit you get with farrell is that he's really really good at promoting his movies and has good relationships with everyone on the talk show circuit. obviously that hasn't paid off well in recent years but i think that has more to do with his last couple movies being horrible.

Anchorman and Stepbrothers are enough for me to give Ferrell a lifetime cool pass.

Liked Anchorman, Old School and Talledega Nights. Have yet to see Semi-Pro, Step Brothers or Land of the Lost. Thought his best role was Mugatu in Zoolander. I hate to sound shallow, but what bothers me the most about Ferrell is his lower teeth. Not since Jewel has there been a celebrity that needs to see a dentist, ASAP! Did he teethe on scrap metal as an infant?

PS- don't ever take your shirt off again, Will. EVER.

Hit and miss for Ferrell, I think the best move he could do is just less movies so he doesn't get over-exposed. For every Frank the Tank there's a Step Brother and that's really unfortunate because I really like the Frank the Tanks.

This might not be a fair assessment of the actor's worth (though I do think they overestimated Ferrell's value).

It can also be a guide of just how good the actors are at picking movies and how willing they are willing to work for someone flashing them money.

Samuel L. Jackson will help your movie, but he also will act for any movie (crap or not) that is willing to pay him. I don't see those snakes on a plane creating the greatest movie hit of all time no matter who was cast. But I can see it making a lot less money with another actor.

In any event if an actor does a bunch of movies including crap ones, the will likely make this list. An actor who only does a few movies and is very selective about getting one's likely to be hits will do better. Also an actor who wants to do non-action movies might also be penalized because some genres don't generate as much box office.

Regrettably we can't run the same movie with a different actor in an alternative universe to see how if the actor really did earn his pay.

Also, Ice Cube is farking terrible and should probably occupy more spots on it.

Ferrel is like Kramer. A little goes a long way. He's better at the cameo.
That said, ANCHORMAN is one of my favorite movies of all time.

THAT said, Talladega Nights and Land of the Lost were just horrible.

Oh and while I'm unaware of any work Tom Cruise did recently besides Tropic Thunder, whatever they'd paid him to absolutely own the scenes he was in was probably worth it.

I really do not like the guy for his Scientology crap, but he kicked ass in Tropic Thunder.

I love when he is going off on the guy over the phone hangs up, then asks someone to find out who he was just talking to.

Reminds me of my grandmother.

THIS

I once read something by a producer where he talked about Tom Cruise and how he "opens" films. It was reckoned that a large chunk of his salary is covered by the extra added by an opening weekend.

Films like Transformers could star almost anyone. You're more replaceable than the 2 leads in High School Musical.

None of this explains Eddie Murphy, though. There must be producers who really think that somehow one of his shiatty projects will be the next Beverley Hills Cop (despite a few decades of evidence against that).
