In the Dark Times I worked tech support for AOL (it was that or gay porno and I'm too skinny for gay porno). So yes, people are stupid. The customers almost as stupid as the people who ran AOL tech support.

Lando Lincoln [TotalFark] 2009-11-19 12:14:13 PM
I'm convinced that a large portion of AOL's subscribers are people that just do not want to get a different email address.

I remember those days. I usually recommended just calling the credit card company and disputing the charges. It is much faster.

Well that sucks :( Guess I'll reach out to all my old coworkers (former AOLer) and see who's gone and who's still there...we need new employees at my current company anyway...

Are they still just dial-up internet provider? What exactly do they do these days?

Khellendros 2009-11-19 02:20:38 PM
Wow, people here seem to be under the impression that AOL is still a primary internet service provider. That's been a minority of their income for years now. Most of their income is in online media and advertising. In fact, ISP account work is something they've been shrinking and getting rid of for 8 years.

Since they don't do ISP work very much anymore, they're shedding the people that did most of that work. They've been steadily dropping people for 10 years, and they put roughly zero work into trying to uphold an ISP customer base. There's no more need for customer service and support for those services. Advertising requires far less people.

/has family that work in their corporate structure
//run, run I say!

Half have below median IQs. Averages don't work the way you think they work. I guess you're in the bottom half of what you're talking about.

When AOL first merged with TimeWarner, I remember seeing a Saturday Night Live where during the skit, there was a crawl at the bottom of the screen taunting their main competitor at the time (Viacom?). At one point, they even wrote "HELLO? HAVE YOU EVER EVEN HEARD OF AOL?" like it was the fuel that would rocket TimeWarner into awesomeness forever and ever.

Thinking back on that makes me laugh much more than Saturday Night Live ever has since then.

And they don't yet realize that you get AOL email addresses for free? You don't have to pay for a service to get it.

AOL is repositioning itself as a content provider and ad network. They'll probably be cutting people from the ISP side of their business, but this is still kind of scary

\Worried for his friends who still work at MapQuest

Our cell phone system sucks compared to the rest of the civilized world, as well. Don't expect either to change anytime soon, if ever.

/tho, I hear that broadband is even worse in Canada, so hey.

PopeSchmope 2009-11-19 09:21:20 PM
Now that I think about it... if I were in "tinfoil hat" mode, I would say that the high prices/low throughput is a conspiracy between the telecos and cable/satellite companies to make sure that we can't get quality HD streaming through the net. I mean, if that were to happen, why have cable or satellite service? Not to mention, anyone with the cash could get into the broadcasting game, and we can't have that.

But I'm not in "tinfoil hat" mode, so I'm happy, happy.

I had AOL until recently. By recently I mean 2001.

The Icelander [TotalFark] 2009-11-19 10:22:05 PM
HypnozombieX: I worked there until about the time they got their crappy script software (sherlock) going and canned all the geeks.

AOL has a really bad case of "not-invented-here" syndrome. While I was at MapQuest I heard stories about how they had to rewrite their TRC (the precursor to the Developer Network) using AOLServer (^), even though it's written in Tcl and it's virtually impossible to find people with experience.

And then there was the MapQuest blogs I started writing in Movable Type but then had them given to the Weblogs, Inc. folks to write using their platform.

I agree with Linux. Crazy. The AOL email may be hurting you chances of acquiring a new job. If the HR person for a company is young, they will assume you are an idiot or lack basic computer knowledge if they see an AOL email address. Change ASAP.

A domain name is $15 a year. Google Apps for that domain is totally free. You get the benefits of GMail and the professionalism of your own domain name.

I havent had AOL in a couple years, but if its still like it was then the only use for AOL is picking up sluts in the chat rooms.

Overall I prefer yahoo, but its nearly useless for chat rooms. Its mostly spam bots and men.

My parents are still on it - even though they have broadband through another company. I guess my mom still spends time in the chat rooms and maintains contact with a large number of close online friends she's built up over the years. I guess there are people who never really made the switch to AIM, then to ICQ, then to MySpace, then to Facebook.

/hard to believe we hooked it up damn near 20 years ago (wow).
