@sshole. Hicks thinks that he doesn't need to spend money on the Rangers until they start doing better. They won't do better until Hicks spends money on them. Until then, the Rangers are the best minor league team in the majors.

Hicks needs to go. The team is on the verge of being REALLY GOOD for a nice long stint. They could have been in on a FA sweepstakes this year and made the race closer at the end if it weren't for Hicks and his bad money handling issues. With any luck at all, Mark Cuban will buy my Dodgers and save them from being gutted in the McCourts divorce case and somebody will buy out Hicks and just leave Nolan Ryan and JD alone with the team because they obviously knows what they're doing.

He should focus on farking up Liverpool, I mean, it's the only thing he's good at.

You honestly think the MLB (or any other league for that matter) is gonna give Cuban a fair shot at ownership? Didn't they already cockblock him once with the Cubs?

Yea, I know, but if the divorce case gets any uglier, I don't think MLB is going to sit idly by and let her gut the team just because her husband likes to fark the hired help and tried to fire her from her GM job. Cuban may be the only legitimate answer for them if they get in a pinch.

Christ no.

I'm sick of that tool running my team into the ground.

Just sell the team to Nolan Ryan already. He knows how to run a baseball team.

When you have a noticeable drop-off in quality after you take over leadership from George W. Bush, you know you're doing it wrong somewhere.

The article was a little confusing to me, and as someone who actually follows the behind the scenes machinations of pro sports pretty intently, that's saying something.

I get that Hicks is in essence trying to buy the club from himself - entity A would be selling to entity B, but Hicks essentially controls both in a sense. But this is the first I've actually heard of what's going on... why is the team being sold? Is it related to HSG's defaults, or is it merely being sold in order to get funding to satisfy Dallas Stars-related financial obligations?

As long as he keeps the Stars, I could give a crap what happens to the Rangers.

jennyz: As long as he keeps the Stars Rafa Benitez, I could give a crap what happens to the Rangers.

That's right, I stole your sentiment.

He has done a great job with the Stars but the Rangers are constantly "on the verge" of doing great things but they never get the division title or a wild card. Is it really about money though? At one point the Rangers had one of the highest payrolls in the league and they were worse than they are now. Something needs to happen though.

I hear he was on the verge of buying but he outbid himself and is now going to give the team to Steinbrenner plus half of what he was going to pay to retain ownership in exchange for up-n-comer Jorge Posada.

The man CAN deal!

Please god no. This guy went from big spender to pennypincher. If you cant run with the big dogs, yada yada.......

So is the consensus in Tejas that Nolan Ryan is baseball Jesus?

(not that I'm inclined to disagree)

He already owns/owned (not sure if he still does) a minor league team (the Round Rock Express, I believe), so he's probably got the bare basics of baseball ownership down. I think it's time to call him up to the big leagues...give the kid a shot.

Cheops 2009-11-19 09:19:07 PM
Yeah he definitely owns the Round Rock Express (the team is even named after him).

They're in NOLA all the time beating up the hapless Zephyrs.

Jayzbo 2009-11-19 10:34:23 PM
I don't think he's done that great of a job with the stars honestly...

He's run them a lot like the rangers, just put barely enough money in to the team to help them appear like a contender.

Hicks is the reason why my Rangers havent been even remotely on the radar for anything worth a damn for a long time. '99 had nothing to do with him either. F Tom Hicks.

Rumor going around that the FOX Network is preparing to offer up $250 million to become a minority owner with Hicks. Hicks didn't exactly deny it, either.

Hicks trying to hold onto Rangers (new window)

My old neighbor is in the Texas Farm League and should be playing next year for the Rangers, from just paying attention to the Rangers since he has been drafted it seems they have good talent coming up, but you have to pay to keep it. I wish he would sell the team and put the money towards LFC anyway.

Hicks came into MLB with consistently high payrolls, and it produced nothing. The problem was that he treated the Rangers like he did the Dallas Stars, i.e., he relied too heavily on big budget free agent acquisitions.

Hicks was great with the Dallas Stars. He is essentially responsible for the Stars having such continued success (both in free agency and winning the Cup in 1999).

I have absolutely no problem with Hicks staying on as long as it will keep our current management. We've built a great farm system, and the pieces are starting to align. JD has consistently said that 2010 is "the year" and judging by last year's performance we should be in for good things next Spring.

Ghoulthulhu: Hicks is the reason why my Rangers havent been even remotely on the radar for anything worth a damn for a long time. '99 had nothing to do with him either. F Tom Hicks.

2004 was one of the best years in the history of the club. Last year was quite good as well. The hatred for Tom Hicks is silly...he's far better than Norm Green ever was!
