I genuinely feel bad for these guys. Even though concussions are as common as paper cuts in the NFL, the damage has been more or less proven to be cumulative. And of course, as with any injury, once it happens, it's more likely to happen again. Not to mention that the pressure to play hurt is immense. Then, when you're used up by forty, the league washes their hands of you, and says, "Good luck, and thanks for all those pounds of flesh. Whelp, off to the draft to rein in the next generation of starry-eyed cannon-fodder."

I mean, yeah. They're still rich, famous, and get to play in the big leagues for awhile, so I'm not crying TOO hard for 'em. I just wonder how many of them who don't invest well would say it was worth it once their playing days are behind them, and they're selling meat door-to-door like Ickey Woods.

True Story: a number of years ago I worked at a large sporting goods chain, and former NFL Pro Bowler was working on the receiving dock. He wasn't too bitter, all things considered - his wife had forced him out of football, and then left him. Nice guy, just sort of resigned to his fate.

Aikman's concussion words are the only thing that makes it worthwhile to keep the sound on with Joe Buck doing play by play.

"As a quarterback, you have to be able to move around in the pancake in order to make plays."
"well said troy. and catching the pass is hester, for the touchdown. as time expires. what a comeback."

THIS. I watched maybe 5 episodes total of "Just Shoot Me" and that episode was one of them. I even had it recorded on a VHS tape that I insisted my friends watch. To see it now in a headline on Fark absolutely blew my mind because I had no idea anyone else found it as awesome as I did. I.. I have to find it online right now. Work be damned.

Pretty sad really, a lot of these docs are paid by teams to give them the prognosis they want to hear.

Anyone with common sense would think a person that's had two concussions in a relatively short time should take some serious time off. Concussions get easier and easier to get once you've had one. Being an NFL running back, he'll get at least a few more this year.

He'll end up being like Andre Waters, who eerily enough, played for the Eagles.

40? What do you think this is, the MLB? Average career length is 3.5 years, so you're looking to be "meat" by the time your 25-26.

(The NFLPA is the *worst* players union by far. no medical care for previous players, and unguaranteed contracts that be cancelled by one party.)

It took an ex-player-turned-lawyer (Ron Mix) even to get the league to recognize player eligibility for Disability benefits. The league was even trying to shaft them on that, too.

/Ron Mix, HoF Class of 1979. I bet he was on the "Famous Jewish Sports Legends" leaflet.

Truthfully, I can't believe the shiat that the NFL gets away with in regards to labor relations. I mean, they're talking of addidng another 3 games to the schedule (2 real, 1 pre-season). Are the players going to get 20% increases to reflect the increased revenue?

Will there ever be a "retirement plan" that includes medical care for life because of serious career ending injuries?

Seriously, the NFL labor relations are completely effed up, with the owners having ALL the power. Isn't next season without CBA? How long before the next strike? 2 years?

And people wonder why the pre-game shows feature 35 former players as analysts.

Are they adding three games total? I've heard of one plan that would replace 2 of the preseason games with real games, so adding 1 more preseason game (where most teams have you paying full price to essentially watch job interviews) maybe makes sense in that case.

Will there ever be a "retirement plan" that includes medical care for life because of serious career ending injuries?

No one is stopping the NFLPA from taking care of their own. Of course the league should chip in too, but that's what the CBA is for. Why weren't these types of things addressed by earlier CBAs?

I like the NFL's structure much better than MLB's (no cap, so expensive free agents gravitate to a rich teams) or the NBA's (long guaranteed contracts seem to encourage players to coast in non-contract years, plus the cap math is perverse). Is there really a "powerful" players union for any US sport?

Next season is capless unless a new CBA is in place. The current CBA was scheduled to run through 2012, but the owners exercised their option to end it a year early. The NFLPA had the same ability.

It seems to me that both sides have make-or-break issues for the next CBA. The owners want a NBA-type rookie scale, so if the players are serious about health care and disability issues or guaranteed contracts for veterans, they need to put that on the table as well.

The MLBPA I would say is strong. No caps, guaranteed contracts, and easy free agency. They have the best deal going among pro sports leagues.

agreed. All the MLBPA has to do is shift the wrong way toward displeasure and bam its changed to what they want.

All because the owners, and they should, fear another strike.

That is power.
