fat people tend to harbor a lot of animosity, anger and snack foods. these players should have known that going in.

2 things:

1. At the college level, you are grown men and exceptional athletes. If you can't take the heat, fark off crybaby biatch. You're not a kid anymore.

2. If you can't take criticism or verbal abuse from a fat man ... A FAT MAN, who by default has no soul and whose feelings don't matter ... then you should kill yourself.

You want to hit him, but you can't. You'll never get your hand back. He has mouths in the folds of his fatrolls. Mouths that yearn for tasty college boy flesh. You throw the punch. You connect. Your hand sinks into the plump flesh of his gut. You go to pull your hand out, but find that it won't budge. That's when you feel the teeth. That's when he looks at you with that look in his eye...cold..dead...but hungry. Like a shark. When you start to scream, he starts to laugh.

you can drop him, it just takes a little strategy. the key is to hit him in his belly band-aids, which makes his pants fall down. then while he's trying to pull them up you hit him again. eventually he falls down in a comic manner and he'll be too fat to get up. then you have to fight an indian guy.

"One day, [Mangino] said in front of the entire team, 'Are you going to be a lawyer or do you want to become an alcoholic like your Dad?' "

Apparently, Mangino wants to be Grimace instead of just settling for Mayor McCheese.

mangino allegedly told a player that if he didn't improve his performance he would "send him back to st. louis to get shot with his homies", threatened assistant coaches with their jobs in the middle of team meetings, and verbally assaulted a parking attendant

it wouldn't be acceptable in any kind of corporate situation, it shouldn't be acceptable in college football

You know, I'm torn. On the one hand it does sound like a lot of whining. But on the other hand: it's 2009. You don't tell a kid to go back home and get shot with his homies, or go be a drunk like his dad. You just don't. We've evolved that way as a society at least, and it's a good thing overall I think.

Pretty damning though that former players are willing to come out on the record like this. Fat Man's time in Lawrence is done I think.

Hilarious.

It must be nice to be an Internet tough guy. My guess is, you'd have an entirely different perspective if it was you getting abused in front of a crowd.

Or sooner. If former players are willing to lob bombshells like this, it's already gone beyond the point of no return. They'll surely have enough for "cause" from the current players, they'll break him off before the Mizzou game.

If you want to question a kids toughness, will, work ethic, etc to motivate them, fine. But bringing up home life, their backgrounds, etc is dirty pool, and just being mean for the sake of being mean. Kids can't control where or to whom they are born. It crosses the line.

HBK 2009-11-19 11:33:46 AM
I had a coach like that once. A short, insecure, little man who belittled everybody and liked to get in our faces. Luckily, it was high school wrestling, so there came a day where I was given the chance to lay him out in front of everybody.

It was one of the most satisfying moments of my adolescence.

Oh, it certainly crosses the line. And Mangino is a fat piece of shiat and an asshole. But for Christ's sake, at 18 or older surely you can withstand verbal abuse.

I'm sure they can, and many of them obviously did judging by the former players coming forward now, but why should they have to?

right but you have to discount everything he says because he's a dead-eyed shell of a man. he's like the big fat outer-shell of a russian nesting doll, but filled with hate and pudding. if you take the things he manages to wheeze out through gasping breaths seriously, then you need to re-evaluate your mental toughness.

Lighten up, Francis. It's a D-I football team, not a ballet team (see "Dan Hawkins, Colorado - Go play intramurals, brothers). Nobody complained when they were suddenly competing for a Big 12 Championship. Chances are (pure speculation, of course) these kids coasted on talent alone until college and nobody gave them a hard time about anything.

i_dig_chicks 2009-11-19 11:46:34 AM
Those players could always join the Marines. The D.I.'s only have kind words to say.

Coach_J 2009-11-19 11:49:53 AM
I know High School football coaching is nothing like D-I college coaching at KU...but I learned a valuable lesson my first year of coaching a number of years ago that applies to coaching kids at all levels.

"Most kids play harder for coaches they like vs. coaches they can't stand.".

Sure you can cuss out a kid and embarrass him and ridicule him in front of his teammates...but why? There are endless ways of motivating kids that don't include embarrassment and ridicule...why choose methods that are only going to make the kids think you are a dickhead?

A coach's job is to maximize the performance and execution of the players and the team. Sure some kids respond better to an "in your face style" but no kid responds to "Are you going to be a lawyer or do you want to become an alcoholic like your Dad?" (FTA). Not only is that not motivating, but it's just unnecessary. Making a kid feel like shiat isn't going to make him play better. It's only going to make him feel like shiat.

If the charges are true, he should be fired. Not only is that an ineffective way to coach and motivate kids, but you think anybody with any talent is going to want to play for that knucklehead?

You can get in a kid's face and let him know he's not getting it done without acting like that. Once you make it personal, you've stopped being a coach and you've become a bully.

And no one wants to work and play hard for a bully.

Agreed. When I was a freshman in HS, I was the last player picked for the B-team and the coach said I'd probably never even dress for a game. But he liked my intensity and I was a smart player (meaning "not very good"). He crushed me all season long and at the end of the season meeting he said something about each individual. When he got to me he said "Mark...well...everyone needs a whipping boy." I was fine with all the abuse but he never got personal with it. What Mangino supposedly did crossed the line. /cool story

FTA: I have seen him runwaddle up to a player and push a player.
