Whatever, he's got an Oscar. The story is that once again the best documentary of the year got dicked out of a nomination because people actually saw it - Anvil!: The Story of Anvil.

Don't care about Moore, but this semifinalist movie on the list sounds good and currently has a 100% rating at Rotten Tomatoes:

The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers

/I'll have to see it.
//...so long as the documentary filmmaker is not fat.
///I hate fat documentary filmmakers.

There were a surprising number of high profile documentaries this year, Outrage, September Issue, Anvil, Good Hair, It Might Get Loud... strange to see that none of them made the list.

Yes, and I'm sure if it was a vere witty, cleverly constructed joke aboue Moore being fat, you'd be perfectly okay with it.

I'm guessing you don't like the headline either because you're fat, or because you really like Moore, and don't want his good (but fat) name sullied by implying that he's fat (because he is indeed fat)

If it is the former, I suggest you be grateful that no one on here is making fun of you for being fat, and maybe get your fat arse on a treadmill instead of playing the White Knight on the internet.

If it is the latter, I suggest you take a step back a realize that this is Fark, and 95% of what is said on this site is cheap humor at obvious targets. If you don't like it you might be happier over on Disney.com where everyone plays nice together. But don't forget to thank your sponsor before you leave.

I hate that crap as well. Not because I'm a big fan of Moore's (Bowling for Columbine was crap), but because the joke isn't funny and it's repeated incessantly as though it's somehow an argument.

We all know he's fat. If you want to make fun of the guy, use something better.

WFern: We all know he's fat. If you want to make fun of the guy, use something better.

Right. Making fun of Moore is a rich environment.

He is, shall we say, a large target?

WFern: I hate that crap as well. Not because I'm a big fan of Moore's (Bowling for Columbine was crap), but because the joke isn't funny and it's repeated incessantly as though it's somehow an argument.

No. "My hair is a bird. You're argument is invalid," is repeated incessantly as though it's somehow an argument. Pointing out that Moore's fat arse, is indeed fat (and believe, me if you've never noticed... that guy is a fat arse) is just done to bring awareness to his fatness.

And clearly many people think that pointing out that Moore is the size of a small planet is funny, otherwise it wouldn't happen in every Moore thread, over and over again.

We all know he's fat. If you want to make fun of the guy, use something better.

So what you're saying is, you don't have any problem at all with people making fun of Moore, you just don't want them to go after the low hanging fruit? (As Moore tends to do, both in his documentaries, and at the buffet)

I have a better idea. If you're so bothered by people making fat jokes about Moore, how 'bout you exercise a little bit of self control (unlike Moore when his diet is concerned) and not read a thread that you know deep down in your little heart of hearts, will be almost exclusively about how fat Moore is? how 'bout you give that a try, Hmmmmm?

/Oh yeah. Mike is fat.

Uh, about the headline...

Owner of Old Country Buffet files bankruptcy
Wednesday, January 23, 2008

http://stlouis.bizjournals.com/stlouis/stories/2008/01/21/daily36.html (pops)

Buffets Holdings Inc., parent company of Old Country Buffet, announced Tuesday that it has filed for Chapter 11.

Eagan, Minn.-based Buffets has 626 restaurants in 39 states, including 615 buffet-style restaurants under the Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet, Ryan's and Fire Mountain names, and 11 Tahoe Joe's Famous Steakhouse steak-buffet restaurants. The privately held company also has 16 franchised locations in six states.

Buffets has 10 restaurants in the St. Louis area, according to its Web site.

All of the Buffets' restaurants will remain open and staff will be paid as usual, the company said. Group reservations and all customer programs and policies, including coupons and gift cards, will remain in effect.

"We intend to use these reorganization process to make the company stronger and more financially secure as we continue to contend with the current challenging operating environment," Buffets CEO Mike Andrews said. "This restructuring is driven primarily by the need to reduce the amount of debt on our balance sheet."

To fund its continuing operations, Buffets has secured a $385 million debtor-in-possession financing facility from several financial institutions in its bank group. The credit facility includes $85 million in new funding and $300 million carried over from the company's pre-petition credit facility.

Buffets' legal adviser is Wilmington, Del.-based Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor. Its financial advisors are Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin Capital Inc. and Kroll Zolfo Cooper, both based in New York.

Old Country Buffet owner closes 51 locations, lays off 2,300
Thursday, February 14, 2008

http://stlouis.bizjournals.com/stlouis/stories/2008/02/11/daily58.html (pops)

Less than a month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Old Country Buffets operator Buffets Holdings Inc. shut down 51 of its restaurants on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11, including three in the St. Louis area, and laid off between 2,200 and 2,300 workers nationwide.

Eagan, Minn.-based Buffets Holdings Inc. has 626 restaurants in 39 states, including 615 buffet-style restaurants under the Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet, Ryan's and Fire Mountain names, and 11 Tahoe Joe's Famous Steakhouse steak-buffet restaurants. The privately held company also has 16 franchised locations in six states.

A Buffets spokesman said the three St. Louis-area locations that closed were a Fire Mountain location in Webster Groves, Mo., and Ryan's in Bridgeton, Mo., and Swansea, Ill. It is not known how many employees worked at those locations. Buffets now has seven St. Louis-area restaurants.

In a regulatory filing Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said on Feb. 7 it approved shutting down 52 "underperforming" restaurants in 23 states. All but one have already been closed.

The closings will result in a charge of about $10.5 million, of which $1.8 million would be in cash.

In addition, Buffets said that its creditors would delay a scheduled hearing regarding a new bankruptcy financing. Buffets had hoped to borrow $385 million to keep it running during reorganization, according to a filing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, but some of its creditors objected, saying that they hadn't had time to review the plan. It would use $300 million to pay off debts.

Around 17 of the company's creditors objected to the new loans.

FTFA: ' It's a surprising omission (Moore did submit the film) since he won this category with 2002's Bowling for Columbine. '

So, according to those hacks at EW if a person wins an Oscar (reg.tm.) once they are supposed to nominated for every movie they make?

Idiotic statements like this one is just another reason I let my EW subscription lapse.

Maybe the Academy has wised up to the agitprop in his movies or maybe they don't like being slammed because they are in the business to make movie or maybe they see the inherent hypocrisy of Moore trying to make money off a movie that says making money is 'bad'.

Capitalism: A Love Story was - on the whole - a steaming pile of crap.

There were a few parts I agreed with (for example, the segment about how there needs to be a greater separation between regulators and the people they're supposed to be regulating). I also agree with Moore's views on healthcare (the current American system is a farce).

BUT: I really thought the movie assigned too much blame for the crisis on the "evil profiteering banker" stereotype, and tried to whitewash his weak points with emotional sob stories.

Perfect example: the guy who lost his house that "had been in the family for generations". Moore makes it seem like the villainous bankers swooped down and just forclosed the guy's house. However, the important subtext of those scenes was obviously the idiot had borrowed against his house. Were the bankers putting a gun to his head, forcing him to borrow more than he could pay back? No. He (and every other idiot who attempted to live beyond their means) were JUST as complicit in their downfall as the predatory lenders. And Moore conveniently omits this throughout the film.

Horses*#t! The problem was not the amount the guy borrowed, but rather the fact that his interest rate more than doubled from the time he had borrowed. Although I agree that his was not the most compelling example the film could have offered, blaming the "brainless, irresponsible borrower" is not much different than pointing the finger only at the "evil banker types".

If you re-read my post, you'll notice I didn't exclusively blame borrowers. Obviously the lenders are complicit as well. But Moore's film paints it all as an evil capitalist conspiracy to steal innocent people's homes. This simply isn't the case.

Also, as OgreMagi already pointed out, signing up for a variable rate mortgage is still reckless and irresponsible if you don't have comfortable financial breathing room to handle an increase in the rate. If you're going to get foreclosed if your rate goes up only a few hundred basis points, then yeah, you can't afford the loan and you shouldn't be touching loans with a variable rate.
