1 O God, whom I praise,
do not remain silent,

2 for wicked and deceitful men
have opened their mouths against me;
they have spoken against me with lying tongues.

3 With words of hatred they surround me;
they attack me without cause.

4 In return for my friendship they accuse me,
but I am a man of prayer.

5 They repay me evil for good,
and hatred for my friendship.

6 Appoint [a] an evil man to oppose him;
let an accuser [c] stand at his right hand.

7 When he is tried, let him be found guilty,
and may his prayers condemn him.

8 May his days be few;
may another take his place of leadership.

9 May his children be fatherless
and his wife a widow.

10 May his children be wandering beggars;
may they be driven [d] from their ruined homes.

11 May a creditor seize all he has;
may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.

12 May no one extend kindness to him
or take pity on his fatherless children.

13 May his descendants be cut off,
their names blotted out from the next generation.

14 May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD;
may the sin of his mother never be blotted out.

15 May their sins always remain before the LORD,
that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness,
but hounded to death the poor
and the needy and the brokenhearted.

17 He loved to pronounce a curse-
may it [e] come on him;
he found no pleasure in blessing-
may it be [f] far from him.

18 He wore cursing as his garment;
it entered into his body like water,
into his bones like oil.

19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him,
like a belt tied forever around him.

20 May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers,
to those who speak evil of me.

21 But you, O Sovereign LORD,
deal well with me for your name's sake;
out of the goodness of your love, deliver me.

22 For I am poor and needy,
and my heart is wounded within me.

23 I fade away like an evening shadow;
I am shaken off like a locust.

24 My knees give way from fasting;
my body is thin and gaunt.

25 I am an object of scorn to my accusers;
when they see me, they shake their heads.

26 Help me, O LORD my God;
save me in accordance with your love.

27 Let them know that it is your hand,
that you, O LORD, have done it.

28 They may curse, but you will bless;
when they attack they will be put to shame,
but your servant will rejoice.

29 My accusers will be clothed with disgrace
and wrapped in shame as in a cloak.

30 With my mouth I will greatly extol the LORD;
in the great throng I will praise him.

31 For he stands at the right hand of the needy one,
to save his life from those who condemn him.

Well, in its entirety, that makes it sound as though those who fabricate lies and foment maliciousness to bring down the well-intentioned are cursed. Do you think that was the intent of the sign-makers? If not, (by my interpretation) their prayers may backfire on them.

Let me put it as simply as I can.

There's no turning back the clock. A black man has served as President, and there's nothing these cocks or anyone else can do to prevent that now. There will be no rewriting of the history books, no throwing him out and rolling back his policies, no going down the memory hole. A black man has served as President, and even if the unthinkable were to happen tomorrow, that fact will always be true. The floodgates are open. People who aren't white males are now permanently in play, and more will serve in the future whether you like it or not.

"You're playing the race card! This has nothing to do with his race!" Very well then. Even if the unthinkable were to happen tomorrow, Joe Biden would become President. And if he were struck down, Nancy Pelosi would become the first woman President. No matter how many people you take out, Democrats will hold the White House until at least January 20, 2013 and no amount of assassinations can change that either.

And if you pulled it, Obama becomes a martyr. He becomes pretty much a Democratic Ronald Reagan. There'd be a fair amount of time in which no Blue Dog would be able to bring themselves to go against Obama's intentions. At least a couple of Republicans would cross the aisle, at least temporarily, if only to show that what happened is way out of bounds.

Long story short, you idiots are so dumb you don't even know the fire you're playing with. And I haven't even gotten into the consequences facing anyone connected to the guy who actually pulls the trigger.

As with so many things, I wonder if they've really thought about what they're quoting. Who is the beleaguered leader and who are those besieging him with baseless accusations? Who are the Pharisees and who are the sinners? What are the characteristics of the people God sides with, rather than against? Hint: the "Man after God's own heart" was the one who committed murder to cover up his adultery. Fundies could use a dose of self-awareness. I hope they get it before they get too much further from the path of Jesus.

I think what a lot of them do is think of the Bible not as one large text to be taken as a whole, but as a long string of stand-alone passages to accept or reject depending on current need. When one quotes a passage, they temporarily forget the rest of the Bible even exists, with the possible exception of passages within plain sight of the one quoted (which allows Psalm 109:9 to slip in here).

So when someone quotes this passage with malicious intent, if you were to ask them about 'Thou Shalt Not Murder', it wouldn't register with them.

If you are mining the Bible for quotes to use at a political rally, then maybe you haven't been actually reading it for comprehension.

Try that, and maybe absorb the message, and you might find little things like supporting philandering, liars who steal and bear false witness on a regular basis more upsetting than a dark skinned man in the White House, and maybe be less worried about taxes, as opposed to how you can help folks and bring peace...

Just a thought.

Yes, but it is sort of odd to quote a verse out of context, especially when the rest of the passage is perhaps the important part.

That's part of the problem with quoting verse. The Bible isn't a stream of small snippets of wisdom, but a rich tapestry of lessons--some of which have been studied, in their entirety for generations, and there is still lively debate on the interpretations--and to take snippets out of context, especially in the cases like this that sort of miss the Gottverdammt point of the whole thing, it makes folks look like self serving hypocrites that don't read for comprehension, and only look to dupe the unwary.

Which is part of the problem. So many people claim to LOVE the Bible, but haven't the time to actually parse the lessons and the meaning of the words. They would rather appear to live a goodly life, as opposed to dedicate themselves to that purpose. They want public credit for their deeds, and wear their faith on their sleeve to SHOW you how devout they are, as opposed to being satisfied that Jehovah sees their piety and will reward their efforts.

It is sort of against everything that their Good Book should have taught them. And that shames them.

To quote from Mr. Paine,

The Christian Mythologists, after having confined Satan in a pit, were obliged to let him out again to bring on the sequel of the fable. He is then introduced into the Garden of Eden, in the shape of a snake or a serpent, and in that shape he enters into familiar conversation with Eve, who is no way surprised to hear a snake talk; and the issue of this tete-a-tete is that he persuades her to eat an apple, and the eating of that apple damns all mankind.
