Welcome to Farktography!

This Week's Theme: "Filtered For Your Protection"

Description
: Use some sort of filter to distort or alter your image. Explain your method of filtering in your post. Note: Must use physical filters, lenses, common household materials, etc. No in-camera digital filters or post-processing filters in Photoshop, GIMP, etc.

We ask that before submitting your photos you read and adhere to the following submission rules, including but not limited to the following:

- Submissions must be photographs; screen captures do not count as photographs.
- You must be the original photographer of your entry. Do not submit anyone else's photography as your own.
- You are only allowed to enter a photograph once. Do not submit the same photo to another contest later.
- You may enter 3 photos in each contest as long as each photo is of a different composition.
- Please post each photo separately so they can be voted for individually.

Please note:

The overarching ideal behind Farktography is that image corrections are acceptable, while adding or removing elements in the image (e.g. removing telephone poles, adding Elvis) is not acceptable. HDR, stitching, or otherwise combining exposures in post processing are not allowed unless specified for a particular theme (multiple exposures done in-camera are acceptable, however). See the rules for more information on acceptable modifications, or check in at the Farktography Forums.

Legal: All photographers submitting photos to this contest are the legal copyright holders for the photos submitted and the photos are not to be considered free for any other use without written consent from the submitting photographers.

- Drop by the Farktography Forum (for chatting, critique, techtalk and so on)

- Stats can be found here.

- Image hosting sites can be found here.

Shot with a tripod mounted D80. Since the camera was pointed into the sunset, and lightning shots typically require a long exposure to have much luck, I needed to increase my exposure time.

Filters used: CPL stacked on top of a 3 stop ND filter, providing about 5 stops of light loss. This took my exposure time from 1/80" to 2/5".

This picture is the sun setting over the Gallatin Mountains, just south of Livingston, MT. This strike was less than a mile from where I was standing, after getting this shot I decided to pack it up and head home.

shot with the camera behind a mosquito headcover because it was raining approx. 4,000 gallons a minute while I was taking the shot. Also a neutral-density filter to slow down the water.

took this on my lunch break a few months ago. this is what I have just minutes from my office in downtown.

this is a shot at midnight, under a full moon. I had a polarizing filter on to see what it would do, and there may have been others as well. Neutral Density, various color filters, I was on a roll that night. Not a star filter, that's just caused by stopping down. I was just off of knee surgery and had no business standing on the surface of a frozen lake by myself all hopped up on pain pills, but there I was.

'Not Feeling Quite Right'

This week, all of mine were shot bottom-to-top through a 5 gallon aquarium. I took the middle leaf out of the dining room table and set the aquarium across the gap. Moderate thumps on the side produced higher frequency, shallower ripples. Shaking the whole thing gave larger waves and greater distortion. At one point I was happily thumping one side of the tank for 10-15 shots. I looked down and there was about thiiis much (holds fingers really close) space before the whole thing fell through, taking my camera with it.

I'll try to post a pic of the set-up over on farktography.net.

How do you make your own graduated ND? I want one, but don't want to spend the money on a high quality store-bought one right now.
