Shame they sold it. It could have become another urban relic like the Packard factory or the train station.

Considering the roughly $1M a year in just upkeep for the city of Pontiac, I'm surprised they didn't just do that anyway. Now they're going to try to open it back up for a possible soccer team? Interesting.

The Pontiac Silverdome is 30 miles from downtown Detroit. While I agree that the Silverdome should have just been toppled, it's nowhere near where you think it is.

ChrisDe 2009-11-19 07:25:22 AM
That's about one percent of the cost to build it. Sweet deal.

JustFark 2009-11-19 07:54:40 AM
Not so fast. There was an earlier deal that Pontiac would not accept and a judge has issued an injunction to stop this new sale.

Apparently the earlier bidder, who is black, is claiming racial discrimination against the Mayor in denying his bid. Fark: the Mayor's black and the developer has never been a developer, but is a civil rights attorney.

can we just say all of Michigan?

ha-ha-guy [recently expired TotalFark] 2009-11-19 08:54:37 AM
Just get rid of the farking thing at this point. The dome only stays up due to their being more interior pressure in the dome than outside, making it expensive to keep that sucker up. Last thing the city of Pontiac needs to be footing the bill for.

As much as I love Michigan, there are some definite areas which need annexing. I'd start with Flint first, though.

I'm honestly surprised an eccentric millionaire didn't buy it, just to own a football stadium.

If the City of Pontiac ACCEPTS that offer, their politicians truly deserve to be kicked out of office. SOMEONE should be able to pony up more than that. As someone above pointed out, the land SHOULD be worth more than that, and will be if all they do with the stadium for the next 10 years is....nothing.

It will cost nearly that much just to demolish it. Doing nothing is not an option, as it needs to be maintained so as to not become an environmental threat.

While they are unhappy with the offer as stated here, (new window) it was better to get it off the books as opposed to continuing spending $1.5M per year in upkeep of the property.

Lt. Cheese Weasel 2009-11-19 10:44:51 AM
he winning bid for the stadium went to a group of real estate investors from Toronto who plan to use the stadium for sporting events, including men's and women's major league soccer games, said Leeb.

It stands to reason that if the area is under such deep depression, no one is going to have any money to attend your farking stupid ass soccer games. durrr....

Problem is that it was done as an auction. It's not clear what the rules of the auction were, but apparently there was no minimum bid (3 other bidders must have bid less) and it was probably set up to be binding and requiring one selection.

They should have at least set a minimum bid around $1 mil or so to make sure that at least the land value was covered.

Wait. I've been told on Fark that they leveled Taco Town to build Cowboys Stadium and so it's a wonderful thing that Jerry did. Are you telling me that this was in fact a great area and that Jerry paid a lot of money for the land?

He made a few people well off by buying their property, but it wasn't all slums he tore down to build to begin with. Just saying.

Except that the leaders in Detroit would create fake companies to buy the properties you want to buy, and then sell those properties to you at hyper-inflated prices.

And the crumbling Cobo Hall... it's a GEM, I tells ya!

I read that story, and it wasnt even close to reality. The junkies took the copper a decade ago, and the aluminum last year.

I'm in Lansing, there's not much to write home about this place either. If the government didn't operate out of here it would have gone the way of Detroit long ago.

I left Lansing almost 2 years ago for Chicago. I still have a house there if anyone wants to buy it.

Yeah, a soccer team that will fill 1/5 of the stadium if they're lucky. But hey, why not. The Silverdome is still in fine shape. It seems like a waste to just leave it there doing nothing but what else is there for it to do? Too bad they can't just take the thing apart and transport it somewhere else for another team, maybe a college team that could use a new stadium or something.

Erom 2009-11-19 04:02:54 PM
I don't understand the headline. You're comparing the sale of a 35 year old run down stadium with one of those brand spankin' new state-of-the-art jobs? That's like me making a snarky headline about Chevies being cheap because a 1990 lumina costs $800 while a new civic cost $16,000.

and that's me completely ignoring the fact that you are implying that the pontiac silverdome is in detroit.

browneye 2009-11-19 04:06:32 PM
Pontiac's political and economic structure is as corrupt as hell. I'm originally from Pontiac and every year since the Lions left the city would receive multi-million-dollar offers to buy the Silverdome. And every year the deal would fall through because of some feeble lame-ass excuse which usually translated to not enough monies/favors being offered to the mayor, council-members and/or their cronies. Now the economy has collapsed the Silverdome is being sold for less than the price of homes in Birmingham (new window). Bastards.

Funk Brothers 2009-11-19 05:11:16 PM
I would buy the Silverdome for a dollar.
