FTFA: Microsoft will have to stop selling the Chinese versions of its Windows 98, 2000, 2003 and Windows XP, according to the court.

How convenient for them. I'm sure their "appeal" is to keep the Chinese government from seeing them doing cartwheels and victory dances.

That's pretty much what I was thinking since Microsoft has been trying to kill off Windows XP for a while now.

Depending on the wording of the contract, this might actually be a correct result. Sounds like Microsoft hired a Chinese firm to design the Chinese fonts for Windows 95, and continued to use them up to XP, even though the contract was for Windows 95 only. This sounds like something that could reasonably occur.

i guess the President of Communist China Hu's visit to Billy Gates home for dinner along with 60 guests about 5 years ago did not pay off....

and the strangest thing is that President Hu visited billy BEFORE he met with President Bush.

Yep. It's amazing how quickly China responded when a Chinese IP was at stake. Meanwhile, when it comes to IP that didn't originate in China, they're still #1 in total pirated copies and #17 in percentage of pirated to total copies..

82% of all software in China is stolen. I'm glad China's patting itself on the back defending its own IP from the foreign devils, but perhaps it could get off its ass and deal with the country's rampant global theft?

That's called Windows NT. I remember when I was taking my Windows NT MCSE classes (yeah, bite me) and they got to the part about networking between operating systems. Most of the OSes out there required some sort of gateway. OS/2? Nada. There were no seams between communication in NT networking and OS/2 networking. Which made me wonder even then just how much source code Microsoft stole from IBM. My hunch is that it was a hell of a lot. Maybe 80%? I'm sure there are some bitter ex-IBM employees that could shed further light on that situation.

Since they were in a business partnership when OS/2 was created, it's just as possible that the networking stack of OS/2 was designed by Microsoft and then appropriated by IBM as part of the collaboration. Remember, at the time IBM was the Evil Empire of the computing world that Apple was trying to take down.

I laugh everytime the idea that China is gonna steamroll the US comes up. Not as often now as it did 5 years ago, but still you hear it. Yeah, a country with 4x the population and 1/8th the agriculture, and NO RESPECT FOR INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY WHATSOEVER is going to out-innovate the US. Without innovation, all they have is cheap factory labor and lame enviro laws and they won't even compete with Japan and S. Korea.

You do realize that even major companies in Japan -- like Sharp, for instance -- have outsourced their electronics manufacturing to China?

As the standard of living improves in China (from all of the money that foreign countries are pumping into it), China's people are becoming even better educated and Chinese companies are positioning themselves to become the innovators, rather than just the imitators/laborers. Eventually, China won't look to countries like the US and Japan for ideas... THEY will be generating the ideas. You go ahead and laugh. China has the financial resources and the resolve to do it... and we're financing it.

Just look at how Lenovo took over the Thinkpad brand from IBM and quickly made a name for themselves in the laptop business. China also has the potential to eventually make a big impact on auto manufacturing as well, especially after GM contracted a lot of Buick design work to China and sold the Hummer brand to a Chinese company.

You do realize that the US of A did the same thing back in the day. Copied books and industrial equipment, stole trade secrets, etc. We only clamped down on it when we started producing things worth protecting.

Not saying it's right, just that it's a little bit of the pot calling the kettle black.

Yes, but I got over it. An OS is a just a tool, use the one that does what you need it to do. My gaming machines are XP (Win7 when forced to), netbooks are Linux (Ubuntu), the file can is Linux (Fedora 11). I don't own any Macs, but my former neighbor (musician and advertisement jingle creator) swore by his Mac and ProTools for his recording.

Skyfrog 2009-11-20 02:42:15 AM
Through one of their agreements IBM was able to continue including a mini-installation of Windows 3.1 as part of OS/2. There were two versions, one with Windows 3.1 included and a slightly cheaper one for people who already owned 3.1 and could use their disks to install it in OS/2.

Yeah, and that confused the hell out of anyone that wasn't a dedicated OS/2 user and was thinking of trying it out. "OS/2 Warp with Windows" didn't make a whole lot of sense to a lot of people, especially since most people already had Windows 3.1 installed and could use the plain "OS/2 Warp" version. More of that brilliant marketing for which IBM is known.
