No possible way this could be an error on the stimulus website.

My guess is that John Perzel sent bonuses campaign resources there reflexively.

Of course not. That part of the page they cite is deadly accurate of course, but the same page showing thousands of jobs in the real districts is not to be believed.

Yeah, I did some programming last year updating our database of Congressional districts (for a map product we sell to the military). The database had 19 districts that didn't exist. So I fixed it up and added a couple verification checks to make sure no invalid one could be entered from the user side. I'm guessing some junior programmer at whatever agency is doing recovery.gov failed to do so.

I don't get it. The stimulus helped states balance budgets, it helped pay for COBRA, it enacted one- if not the- biggest single-year tax cut in American history... but if it can't be traced directly to creating a job, OH TEH NOES!!1! And especially with these "GOTCHA!" farking juvenile attacks.

I've got a relative who got a stimulus job. Know what she's doing? She's working for the Virginia Employment Commission helping OTHER PEOPLE find jobs. So, those jobs she helps other people find aren't technically stimulus jobs, but she wouldn't be there to do it without the stimulus money.

If you want to argue the stimulus was a massive mistake, fine- I can certainly entertain those arguments, and would probably agree with most of them. But just like with health care, I hear a lot of biatching and whargarbl, and very little solid plans. And if your strategy is "ANYTHING OBAMA/THE DEMOCRATS DO IS BAD!!! ACORN! KILL GRANNY!!1!", kill yourself.

Clicking around a little, EVERY state shows a 00 Congressional district.

I'm wondering if that's not an overhead/statewide/slush number.

This, I really don't get how government officials at all levels and of all political stripes seem to have so much problem with these InterTube thingys.

This.

The opposition party here does nothing but go after the lowest hanging fruit possible, and can't even be bothered to look into the stimulus package in enough detail to find valid criticisms. Which, if the package is 1/10th as bad as the whargarble suggests, should be a pretty easy task.

The premise behind the recovery.gov website is that the stimulus recipients are supposed to enter their data.

Obviously the website is missing basic sanity checks on its input forms.

Quick Question Farkers: How many of you know your congressional district (with out looking it up)?

gallo caldo 2009-11-18 12:09:35 PM
amazing_live_seamonkeys: Odd that these "errors" seem to always inflate the number of jobs created etc.

If a job was lost, it wasn't due to the stimulus. Didn't you get the memo? All negative events result from Bush administration policies or matters beyond the power of the administration. All positive events were caused after 1/20/09. Get with the program. If a staffer had tried to plug in "-2 jobs in NE District 2" the entire internet would come to a crashing halt. It's like dividing by zero or something.

That's an easy one. Bureaucracy is almost always inefficient in almost everything they do, it's simply the nature of the beast. This is one of the reasons I favor smaller government.

Actually they're not going to control "healthcare" but offer a health insurance policy. And people like you vacillate wildly between "OMG They will kill private insurance" and "The government is incompetent and can't do anything". It's not exactly helping your argument.

HairBolus 2009-11-18 12:15:39 PM

It is the stimulus recipients who are reporting the data, not who ever decided who they would be.

Magic!

Not only did they invent jobs saved or created, they invented districts for them to be saved or created in! Way to take it to the next level Team Obama.

I'd really appreciate it if a liberal could explain how this type of a mistake on Bush's watch would be excusable, since it is clearly excusable on Obama's watch.

mongbiohazard:

----------------------------------------

Most won't disagree in that bureaucracy is inefficient. That's why we have the government only cover externalities where the free market fails to meet societal needs. It's better to have an inefficiently run school system than to have a private health care-like school system where millions of Americans grow up with no access to school whatsoever. Same goes with police, the postal service, all the various regulatory agencies run by the gov't - and probably health care.
