Perfect casting, although I'm not sure the book itself has aged that well.

I'll be seeing a staging of the Screwtape letters later this year. Now if Serkis were cast as all roles that would, indeed, kick ass.

I dunno, I've got the John Cleese version and that one is pretty pretty pretty dang good; just truly excellent casting.

I have heard the John Cleese version as well, and it is pretty good. But after hearing this Screwtape, I find myself filled with excitement.

Filled with win sin.

I don't know. Lewis' idea (that the closest thing to hell that the modern world has to offer is a corporate bureaucracy) still works for me.

It's weird to think that Focus on the Family is making something that is seemingly artistically relevant.

Could have been done much better by Dick Cheney.
Afterall, he is the devil's uncle.

Not a fan of thinly-veiled Christian propaganda - but hey, Andy Serkis gotta eat, too.

While off for Veteran's Day last week, I watched all 10+ hours of the latest adaptation of Little Dorrit (yes, I'm aware of the fact that I have no life), starring Serkis as the evil Frenchman. Man, he plays an excellent baddie.

It's actually balls-out Christian apologetics.

Nothing veiled about it, whatsoever.

How on earth did FOTF get Serkis?

Seconded. John Cleese does an outstanding job. It's a more understated performance than what Serkis seems to be doing.

Sweet turnip souffle, that rocks! Screwtape is one of my all-time favorite books from one of my all-time favorite authors, and Serkis looks like he's nailed that bad boy. Most excellent.

/Also was born the day Lewis (and JFK) died.

Yeah, because he didn't make much money with the whole LOTR and King Kong thing ...

And so you felt personally motivated to come in this thread to tell us all about how little you care?

FOTF Adventures in Odyssey is very well done for an audio program. Not saying you have to like it but for Christian programming it's not bad.

The audio-cassettes of Adventures in Odyssey kept us entertained as kids on long car rides, so they definitely have that going for them. Looking back, they have their problems but they also had some pretty entertaining storytelling. Among other things, they did a storyline that had almost the exact same plot as Mission Impossible 2 but did it several years earlier.

One of the things that they have going for them is that they do hire really high quality voice actors.

Aldous Huxley died on the same day as well.

I grew up listening to Adventures in Odyssey. Great kids stories and not too heavy handed with Christianity.

I'd consider checking this out, if Focus wasn't producing it.

Not giving those guys any of my money, though.

To be fair, the chance to be a lit snob and a God-bore in one convenient thread is going to attract a fair amount of drive-by trolling.

True that. But remember that C.S. Lewis ran the gamut of the religious experience. He started piecing together his viewpoints on Christianity as an agnostic. He offers a more multi-faceted digest of the Christian experience than many apologetics.

Besides, the STL is a good piece of literature in its own right. Perhaps that is what attracted Serkis.

I'm reading "Jack" by George Sayer at the moment, actually ... so ... kick ... replies ... you know the drill.

Andy Serkis could be in an accident that horribly mutilates his face, but as long as he had his voice he'd still be turning down work ("Sorry, booked solid!") for the rest of his life!

John Cleese had more of the arch-typical "British" presentation, dry and reserved. Lewis would probably have personally preferred that style. Must remember to ask him. :)

Serkis was robbed when he didn't win an award for his portrayal of Gollum. Absolutely robbed.

He did--if MTV movie awards count. Go to youtube and type in 'gollum mtv award' and you'll find it (my link-fu is weak, sorry).

Besides, you can't knock somebody too much when they can't stand Disney. I have a book of C.S. Lewis' essays and in a couple of them he makes reference to Walt Disney ruining every fairy tale he touched.
