Benson isn't really troubled. He doesn't play for Chicago anymore so life has improved for him.

Benson was largely a douche with one possible legal issue in Texas on the boat. Surprised that Philly didn't sign Johnson as Vick needed company and they have a poor running game, especially with Westbrook concussed.

It would've been awesome if he signed with the Bills:

Bills sever Dick. Get new Johnson.

It seems that players like this who get shipped out, with a chip on their shoulder, tend to play their hardest at this point. So im not saying its a lock, but Johnson could burst out of the gate strong. Same way Benson did. We'll see.

It's hard for a 4th string RB to come out playing lights out.

Most 4th string RBs either don't make the 45 man game-day roster or are playing on special teams somewhere. I don't see LJ having either of those happen.

Obviously if he ramins fourth string, he wont play. I just have a feeling, he'll be working much harder now, and will bump his way up to second string, and with Bensons injury could see some playing time.

I don't either.

Bernard Scott seems to be a serviceable #2 , not to mention that the Bengals have a pretty easy schedule for the most part.

I'm guessing this will turn into a Vick style situation, in where he'll be put in for a few snaps here and there, and will ultimately not really make much of a difference.

Ced signed a 2 year/$7 mil this March, and I can't find any reference to how much of that is guaranteed, so probably next to none, considering he was basically a castoff from the Bears. Compare this to something like what Turner got with the Falcons, which was $34.5 over 6 with $15 mil guaranteed. Now all of the sudden Ced is close to Top 5 in the league in rushing....yeah he's probably going to want a new contract this off season, rather than risk playing for $3.5 unguaranteed next season.

LJ I'm sure is a little leverage by the Bengals when they have to negotiate with Ced, if nothing else.

The irony of them signing LJ of course is that he's the kind of back that needs 20+ carries to get any kind of production out of. Even in his prime when he was averaging 5 yards a carry, it was more along the lines of 3 yards, 2 yards, 2 yards, 1 yard, 17 yards. If they Bengals think they can plug him in for 1 or 2 series a game to spell Ced and get any kind of production out of him, they've got another thing coming.

the LJ signing is obvious. With Chris Henry done for the year they needed another glue guy in the locker room to take his palce.

OK, here's something interesting I pulled up, which is kind of off topic, but interesting nonetheless, and there's no way I can get this submitted as a headline.

A list of the all time yards per rushing attempt leaders, updated to this year. There's some QB's on there, Vick several times obviously, Randall Cunningham and Steve McNair, plus some other QB's back from the 30's, 40's and 50's. Some guys listed as running backs as well that have some pretty gaudy numbers, but all of them have an insanely low number of carries; many under a hundred, and all of them less carries than Chris Johnson already has this season. Dan Towler (6.8 yds/carry, 128 att), Johnny Strzykalski (6.5 yds/carry, 141 att), and Keith Lincoln (6.5 yds/carry, 128 att) are really closest, and all of their carries pale in comparison to what Chris Johnson already has (6.4 yds/carry, 170 att).

At 6.4 right with CJ is Mercury Morris in '73 (but only 149 carries and less than 1000 yards), Jim Brown in '63 (291 carries and 1863 yards: wow) and Ernie Caddel in '36 (only 91 carries and 580 yards).

The point? Chris Johnson is having a scary good year. Let's put this in perspective: in '97 when Barry Sanders went over 2000 yards, he only averaged 6.1 yds/carry. Really, in my mind Barry, CJ, Big Jim and OJ in '73 (2003 yds, 332 carries, 6.0 yds/carry) are the only legitimate, every down running backs to crack the 6.0 barrier on that list. Be interesting to see if CJ can keep up the pace.

We get it, you like Johnsons.

mista_tibbs 2009-11-18 03:27:17 PM
Their 3rd string RB is Jeremi Johnson, who has a chest injury and hasn't played since the Bears game. Also, he has 2 carries on the year for 6 yards. During the Steelers game, the Bengals last running option was Brian Leonard straight into the line for 1 or 2 yards. After playing the Ravens and Steelers back-to-back, that team needs another RB. That last one was a grueling game, and to earn a win they way they did is a testament to how much better that team is this year.

2009 Bengals are for real. Not sure if LJ can still hit the holes fast enough to match the pace of Ced and Bernard Scott, but if anybody can stick it in there and grind it out all day regardless of the pressure, it's Johnson.

/wait.....

The Bengals now proudly feature the #1 position in the AFC North and the #4 power ranking by both SI and ESPN.

As a lifelong fan, I've never seen a group like these Bengals. With the season going the way it is, and with the group they have in the locker room, if LJ so much as hints that he's thinking about saying something that might hurt that team, they'll shove a helmet up his ass.

Brostorm 2009-11-18 03:38:24 PM
This will be good for Benson. He will see his future as an overworked back. The amount of carries he was taking was pretty much ensuring this was going to be his last good year.

mista_tibbs 2009-11-18 03:42:58 PM
Just realized....if Jeremi makes it back for the Oakland game as scheduled, and Ced sits out to rest his hip, for any part of the game that Bernard Scott isn't in there, the Raiders will be facing....that's right....Johnson & Johnson.

Don't think you have much to worry about there. Did you see Marvin Lewis w/ the postgame locker room speech last week? "Congrats, this is a heck of a win, be smart. You earned this one, Be Smart. Enjoy this victory tonight, we'll see you all Monday, BE SMART!"

Marvin will suffer no knuckleheads this year, and he was the main guy pushing for LJ to join the team. If he can still play, this should work out pretty well.

Landon Johnson at linebacker. Doug Johnson was a backup QB in 2006. Now they have Brandon Johnson (LB), Jeremi Johnson (RB), Michael Johnson (DE), Tank Johnson (DT), Larry Johnson (RB), Chad Ochocinco Johnson (WR). So much Johnson, you'd think Mike Brown had an ED problem he's compensating for.

I like the move. Larry Johnson still has something left in the tank and is ready to prove himself again. They've been running Cedric Benson ragged recently, he runs the ball at least 25 times a game, if not more. The bengals will need to keep him fresh for the playoffs (did I just say bengals and playoffs in the same sentence?).

Benson has a slight injury that will need to be rested.
Bernard Scott can't carry a full-time RB load. Plus if he's injured there goes a special teams threat.
Bengals need a good fill-in back.
Expect LJ in the 4th quarter on Sunday.

Also LJ has played the NFC West teams twice per year for the past 10 years. (I don't know when he was a rookie.) With Oakland, KC, and San Diego remaining on the schedule I'm sure he'll be appreciated in offensive meetings.
