Not to nitpick, but when did he get a sister? To the best of my knowledge he only has an older brother, David, who was adopted.

I'm halfway through his new book and I disagree. It's one of the better things I've read from him, and I've read a lot of his stuff. Old school, mean, violent, and pretty damn disturbing. And I'm only 500 pages in. Things are going to get nasty.

I read a local newspaper article on his sister some years ago. She lives somewhere in the Tampa Bay area and is like a teacher or something. She keeps a very low profile and doesn't like being known as "Stephen King's sister."

I'm 200 in and I agree - I can already see where this is going and it's some unpleasant stuff. Enjoying it so far, though. I just hope it doesn't fall apart like the end of Duma Key. IMO, that one kind of did a Dreamcatcher and just went berserk.

I felt the same about Cell, which I kind of liked...right until the end. Then it occured to me that alot of his books fall apart right about 3/4 of the way through when he just seems to fail to deliver.

Still a fan, but I'm waiting to hear from some old school King fans who hit the end and still give it a thumbs up.

I think this because of his trying to tie all his stories into the same multiverse.

The earlier books were scarier as stand alone stories

Later books that started linking it all together diluted it all imho

See, I've liked pretty much ending he's ever done with the exception of the Dark Tower series, and even then I have a love/hate kind of thing going on with it. I mean, I don't like how it ended, and the Crimson King was kind of an anti-climatic letdown, but I also don't see how it could have ended any other way and still not been a huge letdown.

King likes to leave his audience hanging in the end. Whether that's so we can figure our own ending, or to just dick with us, I don't know. But it's his thing, and I like it.

I want to buy "Under the Dome," but the wife won't let me. She says Christmas is coming up, and I'm hard to shop for. Damn it, if I already know what I am going to get, and I want to read it now, can't I just get it now and just not get a Christmas gift? This makes no freaking sense!

Yeah I hear ya. You never know when he's gonna just let it all fall apart. "Dreamcatcher" is one of the worst books I have ever read (and the movie was even MORE terrible).

But so far this one is delivering. I think King is great at short stories and crazy epics. This one reminds me of "The Stand" not for the plot, but the way he writes short chapters featuring one subplot, only to leave you hanging and annoyed by starting a new chapter about another subplot, only to leave you hanging and annoyed by starting a new chapter about the old subplot you already lost interest in, repeat.

He should just rewrite the last (somewhat terrible) 3 books of the series, take himself out of the story, spend more than 5 pages actually AT the Dark Tower and just call it an "alternate ending".

King writing himself into the story had to be one of the worst ideas of his career. Almost ruined the series for me.

I remember actually liking the book, but absolutely HATING the movie. Though the guy playing Jonesy did a great job, it just ended idiotically.

I for the life of me can't remember how the book ended, though.

I thought it was kind of cool, especially since he wrote himself a kind of a barely functional doofus.

I disagree, that could be a great movie and done relatively easily. Some decent actors with a good cgi backdrop is all you'd need.
Also: The graphic novels that have been coming out have been quite enjoyable.

The point FTFA about new installments of the Dark Tower series strikes me as odd. I enjoyed the series as is and think it's kinda complete. Not sure why Mr. King would want to add more to it.

I've only read two of his books, From a Buick 8 and Insomnia, and they didn't make me a fan. They're both "OooOoooOoooo weird stuff happens!" but give no explanation for said weird stuff. They were really frustrating. During the book, great, but you get to the end and you're looking for more pages, some sort of denouement.

I guess that could be the "Oh but he leaves you guessing!" sort of thing, but he kinda just left me pissed off. At least in those two books.

BTW: I've said this before, and I'll keep saying it until you people get it...

King writing himself into the story was awesome. The Dark Tower story was a story about King himself. It's one of the most personal works I've ever read and really enjoyed the way he was able to share that with his fans.

From a Buick 8 isn't a very good book of his...one of the rare ones from him I had to kind of just church through to finish. Under the Dome, however, is very good. I'm not quite finished with it, but it keeps you turning the pages. Dark and mean stuff.

Insomnia is one of his better stories, though it's best if read after IT to give more backstory to Derry. It also more firmly links Derry to the Dark Tower stuff.

I haven't read those two but from what I hear those are among his worst.

I actually like his non-horror novels more. Like "The Stand" and "The Talisman" (the sequel sucks balls though) and of course The Dark Tower series. I'd give those a try. The first book of the Dark Tower series "The Gunslinger" is a great quick read.

There's no way they can do a movie out of those books - it would have to be like 40 hours long. They made The Stand in an 8 hour movie and they still left out huge chunks. I would like to see the lobstrocities and Mordred though.

King says "Under the Dome" will be an HBO series of some kind.

This is good news. The reason most of the movies made off his books suck is they miss the basic humanity of his characters. The rare true adaptations of his stuff, like "Shawshank Redemption" and "Green Mile" put that front and center, like King does. Most of the other movies focus on the monster or the killer car or whatever. King always focuses on the people.

If they do it with the usual high HBO standards, it will be something to see.

Insomnia
gave me the irrits, not just for its lack of any real explanation for the weirdness, but also for its heavy-handedness. Everything was done to the extreme. There were two good little midgets, they were great, but then there was an evil little supernatural midget who was so evil that he could shiat Draculas.

One line from it I'll always remember is that when in the evil midget's lair, there's a baseball cap taken from a kid who (was influenced and) fell into a hole and screamed for his mother for three hours, and his last thoughts before death were of ice cream. Okay, that's good horror writing I guess, but there is no subtlety whatsoever, and no motivation is provided. The evil midget is just a dick for the sake of it.

So the evil supernatural midget gets tortured by the aging guy, and I guess the reader is meant to be feeling pretty good about it, but it's just impossible to care; the aging guy may as well be poking holes in a drawing. "Evil for the sake of evil" is stupid and shallow, and makes no sense. The evil midget has the depth of a teaspoon.

And then the woman who had a bad marriage becomes a lesbian "of course" and just, so much bullshiat. I'm on holidays now so I'll re-read it and give it another chance, but it always bugged me.

The less said about From a Buick 8 the better. That book was ridiculous.

According to me, Internet Guy.
