Rupert Murdoch is never gonna get with the times. Death would be merciful.

Jesus, as if anyone would care to rip an article from Australian Country Style and not pay. Ok fine, he's got the Wall Street Journal, I'll give that a few years before that's considered as much of a tabloid as any of his other "news" outlets, but still shouldn't AP/Reuters be the ones suing the intarwebz for copyright protection?

FTFA
He suggested the company's online newspaper pages will be invisible to Google users when it launches its new paid content strategy.

He said that readers who randomly reach a page via an internet search hold little value to advertisers.

Have fun getting new readers without Google pointing them there.

Wish he'd stop talking about committing Internet suicide and just go ahead and do it.

I'm getting tired of Rupert Murdoch lying about everyone stealing the content he gets from AP. I say lying because if he really believed it he would have talked with his lawyers and they would have informed him that Google and BBC are legally in the clear.

I'm guessing this is a PR campaign for some legislation he wants pushed through congress, since I doubt the general public would care much. I used to have some respect for him as a business man, but saying these types of things - even strategically - makes you look pretty stupid.

I'm surprised he hasn't been sued for libel yet, or whatever the corporate equivalent of that is. Maybe they just figure it's better to ignore him than dignify his accusations with a response.

It's been a long time since I did any web stuff, but isn't there a directive of "No Follow", and a file called "robots" that details to whom and where the directive is to be applied?

Anyhow, the instant case isn't a big deal to me: Fox doesn't seem very newsy to me.

Do it. Do it. Do it. Do it.

// please?

FTA: "[R]eaders who randomly reach a page via an internet search hold little value to advertisers."

One reader/one page load? Yes. Millions of users and millions of clicks? I'd say that's the backbone of internet ad revenue. If Murdoch's right, how does Google even make money? They don't sell anything (except "sponsored links", which are really just ads of a different stripe), and rely almost entirely on clicks.

// do it, Rupe

The WSJ editorials are already firmly setting off with Sam and Frodo to return the One Ring to Freeperland.

Most excellent!! A Walter Egan reference in the headline.

Walter Egan realized a number of very fine albums back in the 70's and 80's, and is a helluva nice guy besides. In fact, one of the songs from Fundamental Roll -- Only the Lucky -- is on my iPod at all times. I had some dealings with him a few years ago, and he is quite a gentleman.

He also hung around with some heavyweights over the years -- Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks amongst them. He could write a very interesting tell-all book.
