Well, after the article that was posted a few days ago [Link]^ which had no possibility of spinning their "business model" into any more than "greed greed greed" I'm pretty much all for a lynch mob. But that's just cause I didn't think of it first. :)

You know why they said it? Because it was profitable to do so. They dont give a shiat about you, me or a batch of purple monkeys shiatting cosmic bananas to the tune of "Hail to the Chief".

If it were profitable to eat babies and make pizzas from the livers of pensioner grandmothers who had their entire families killed in head on collisions they would do so.

Awww, let the crocodile tears flow...

So, how about sharing the $100M a day you are making from investing TARP monies?

xtragrind 2009-11-18 08:49:34 AM
The Administration gave Sachs 10 billion at less than 1% interest to invest when the market was at rock bottom. They turned around and turned that money into 100+ billion. Paid the government back on time with the tiny amount of interest owed.

Seems to me like Sachs is playing by the rules set out by the current administration....

Why exactly are we mad at Sachs and not Obama's boys again?

THIS to a degree - it's not solely Obama's boys

Goldman is playing by the rule book Hank Paulson and his buddies printed. Quite frankly they have lots and lots of smart people working there, and they have the benefit of a lot of their competition disappearing or becoming severely damaged over the last 2 years (Lehman, Bear, UBS, etc...) If you want to be mad at someone, be mad at the former Goldmanites in the government who handed them the keys to the kingdom.

And not that I buy into any of this irrational "Goldman Sachs Caused the Crisis" nonsense, but why "Obama's boys"?

TARP was created during the Bush administration. AIG got their bailout during the Bush administration.

It's stupid enough to blame Goldman, it's even dumber to leverage off that to blame one party or the other for allowing Goldman to do what they are doing. It's like stupidity squared.

Considering the repeal of Glass-Steagall was lobbied heavily by all the investment banks, authored by a Republican, swept through Congress with veto-proof majorities (including a whopping 90-8 in the Senate) and signed into law by a Democrat. . .

Anyone getting partisan about this doesn't get it.

Things that make you go "Hmm..."

It always made me wonder if Clinton signed it to save face (because the minute the veto comes, it blows up in his face), or because he actually agreed to it. Time for some reading.

AmazingRuss [TotalFark] 2009-11-18 01:19:21 PM

TheBlackrose: Things that make you go "Hmm..."

If he vetoed it the Republicans would've pointed to some other thing in the bill to attack him with. The repeal wasn't the bill itself, but an amendment. It's politically dangerous to veto a bill because of an amendment, especially over something obscure to the reality TV crowd, like Glass-Steagall. So, Clinton basically had a gun to his head. It was Congress' job to kill the amendment, but it passed the Democrat-controlled Senate. So whereas it's not an indictment on Clinton per se, any partisan argument blaming this on Republicans dismisses the Senate vote on the amendment.

But Goldman has policies known as "Chinese Walls" that prevent divisions from talking to each other in the interest of regulatory obedience. There's only a few special executives that can breach these walls. Surely, they'd never leverage this power to do anything sketchy, right?

Goldman actually makes the vast majority of their profits from computer-controlled, extremely short-term trading.

gtp123 2009-11-18 09:39:14 PM
Goldman actually makes the vast majority of their profits from completely mundane fixed income, currency, and commodity flow trading. Bid/ask spreads are very wide now and they're pretty much the only game in town.

As opposed to, you know, capitalizing entrepreneurs.

Well, at least we aired that dirty laundry out. These people serve no purpose to the economy whatsoever.

Time to abolish the stock market. Not to get punitive, but because it's obsolete.

What? Just when I start giving you credit for having an understanding about what your are talking about, even though our opinions differ to some degree, you make a statement like this.

Abolish stock markets?!? WTF would the alternative be? Government funded entrepreneurs? Prohibiting entreprenuers and company owners from ever selling their stake?
