Hey, look, an obvious trolling headline in the Music section. Wow, that's never been done before.

Subby stupidity aside, damn that woman has a beautiful voice.

I'm listening to it right now, so I'm getting a kick...

It's a Norah Jones album, what did you expect?

It's definitely one for the Amazon best sellers list/Gray's Anatomy/Oprah crowd.

Actually, it's already #2 over at Amazon. So there.

So fark - what female musical artists DO you like?

You make a strong point. I haven't given Ms. Jones a listen, but maybe I ought to. My own favorite female musicians have alluring voices, write damn good songs, and are sufficiently good-looking for me to fall in love with.

Suzanne Vega, Grace Potter, Fiona Apple, and Beth Gibbons (of Portishead) are some examples.

Fark music fans: should I bother with Norah Jones?

I listened to some of this earlier today on NPR, and it seems that she's decided she'd like to be Rosanne Cash.

It's about her being gorgeous, having a great voice, and not being completely pretentious about either.

Granted, she plays jazz infused music, which some farkers can't stand.

E String - Unless your ok with slow piano jazz, I would recommend her stuff she's done with other people as an intro. She's done a few side projects that are more uptempo.

There's got to be a better solution than that.

At least the Starbucks will sort of keep you awake. You're not supposed to be able to look right through coffee as it were weak tea, yet that is the standard muck you will find at DD. Go there while Norah's playing on your car radio and you might be facing charges for vehicular manslaughter at some point.

/didn't realise Norah Jones was a chancre until I wiki'd her just now.

galactus5000 2009-11-17 05:05:04 PM
E String, as stated above - her solo stuff leans towards slower jazz (although the new album is more 'mainstream' sounding). If you want a more, I guess, bluegrass-y sound, check out her work with The Little Willies - it's quite good indeed.

Try her:

Norah Jones is just a different version of Diana Krall, she is a very successful easy-listening musician. The face that she writes her own music and plays an instrument doesn't really impress me. That should be an expectation.

Here is the video for her song "Limp". Please explain to me why this is not a well-written song executed with competence and artistic vision. Go on, I'll wait. And please, don't tell me that the 25 seconds prior to the drums kicking in tested your patience.

Moreover, here is the video for her breakout single, 1997's "Criminal". How is this not a damn good song from a sexy and talented 20-year old girl?

I'll tell any dude who will listen that Fiona Apple's album "When the Pawn Hits..." is a great record, and playing it will win you the affection of any worthwhile college girl.

An-Unnecessarily-Long-Name: Fiona apple? Are you nuts?

Fiona Apple had a decent set of pipes, interesting phrasing, good pop sensibilities, and could write coherent lyrics. That's already head and shoulders above 80% of the singers out there.

Norah has a lovely voice, but yeah, i get tired of the same song over and over. Fiona is far more dynamic.

Norah is great for playing over the PA of a bookstore or hotel lobby.

Norah Jones is still amazing.

You want music that'll cure insomnia, try Cobie Calliat's 1st album. By track #10, I couldn't get my head off the pillow.

I don't care how much everybody blasts the subby's headline, I have to agree. One time I was listening to one of her songs on a roadtrip to KC and I was drifting off halfway through the song. Her voice is like a seconal & a double shot of whiskey - not that this is a bad thing.

radioman_: I never joined her cult and have no idea what the fuss is about.

She's cute, seems to be a nice person, has a good voice, is musically competent, and her music doesn't completely and totally suck.

This is the best we can do with popular music these days, folks. Sad.

FDR Jones 2009-11-18 03:41:23 AM
I used to have a huge crush on Norah Jones. My sister called me one night to tell me Norah was sitting at her bar. It was all I could do not to get up and walk out on the girl I was having dinner with... somehow I never ended up acquiring her (Norah's) first album, even though I dig the blues/jazz/folk thing...

...she will be mine, oh yes, she will be mine...
