I like it. It's a performance that's more real and natural because it hasn't had surgery performed on it to make it sound perfectly exactly right. it's more human.

Snarky article title doesn't match generally positive article.

Not gonna crank the tunes at work but the bit I listened to sounded fine.

I'd plug her.

Phwoar!

I was all set to click and make fun of her but...

That actually was pretty good.

It was great, and I'm one of those people who can tell.

That. It wasn't bad at all. Not the greatest thing I've ever heard, but it was better than I expected. Wanna know why autotune is so widely over used? Blame people like subtard and the idiot blogger who expect singers to sound inhumanly perfect all the damn time.

radiumsoup [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 03:02:47 PM
count me in as one of the "wtf? she's pretty good, and she's got a great range" crowd.

/and two of the "damn, she's hot" crowd

meh, whatever, mostly reminded me of Richard Cheese. I mean, it's essentially the same thing he would have done with the material.

Mugato [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 04:45:20 PM
So where does she kiss the girl?

Lot better than Taylor Swift's live performance on SNL. Holy hell was that awful.

AliasUndercover 2009-11-17 05:56:24 PM
She's pretty good. I don't know why she uses all the autotune, but she's got some pipes.

CravenMorehead 2009-11-17 05:59:08 PM
Nothing wrong with that at all. Autotune should be outlawed.

If you wish to outlaw the autotune, you must first invent the universe.

No, it shouldn't, rather the zero-sum use of it should. I don't mind the use of it to push someone over the line on one or two notes, but it SHOULD NEVER be used in lieu of actual talent. If you can't sing, you just accept it and don't try to be a farking singer.

That was my point. Thank you for clarifying it for me. ;-)

Not a fan. Watched to see a horror show. But she can sing. I didn't hear anything terribly off-pitch. What's the problem?

And electric guitars. If you can't play, you just accept it and don't try to be a farking player.

No probs.

/in conclusion, and I never thought I would say this, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga....can.....gulp....both sing quite decently.

You can use auto-tune for live-processing.

I don't know whether you can tell that unplugged show was without auto-tune...

gund 2009-11-17 06:14:06 PM
Also unless you were sitting there live, I don't know how one can know that an online video wasn't post-processed.

If I was the recording company I would surely work on it before releasing.

I like the 5/4 timing on the intro and the odd retro-feeling syncopated phrasing on the first verse of this unplugged version.

Her voice isn't bad at all. She's hardly in the Kanye/Jessica Simpson/Linda McCartney calibre which NEEEEDS autotune or else they sounds like kareoke night at the pub.

RockIsDead 2009-11-17 06:17:29 PM
Why does her vagina need an autotune?

Oh, you mean her voice!

HAHA!

When's the last time a pop-tart had one of those!

Scutter 2009-11-17 06:18:56 PM
People are so used to over-produced Autotuned garbage that when they hear actual music they think it sucks. As previously stated, that wasn't the best thing I've ever heard, but I'll take it over Autotune any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

violetvolume 2009-11-17 06:22:30 PM

it's more human.

Yes, more human and crappy.

Why Would I Read the Article 2009-11-17 06:35:21 PM
It wasn't terrible, but that girl is sure as heck no singer. You can find a dozen better singers in any high school choir.

Great rack, though. I'd like to touch it.

theonlyjessica 2009-11-17 06:47:41 PM
i liked it better than the radio version.

That wasn't half bad. Katy Perry just went up a notch in my estimation.

johnsmith99 2009-11-17 07:02:16 PM
Not bad. High notes aren't her forte, though.
I like the song much better since I found out it's a Scarlett Johansson fantasy.

Inaditch 2009-11-17 07:11:29 PM
That was better than the original. And good god, that woman is hot. My girlfriend would kiss her.

apeiron242 2009-11-17 07:20:20 PM
i played the vid and i liked it.

Subby must have little experience with hearing live performances or non Top 40 genres.

That version would be great as a torch song. Subby, can you say "torch song"?

Thanks.

Agreed, voice is fine, although a bit thin on the high notes.

"Take 5" is an amazing album, in spite of it's popularity. I see what they did there.

So, subby doesn't like the style it was performed in? Sounded pretty damn good to me.

Dr. Nick Riviera [TotalFark] 2009-11-17 07:37:33 PM
I listened to two of the songs for about 30 seconds apiece, which now roughly triples the amount of Katy Perry I have listened to in my lifetime. I don't much care for the songs, but her vocal abilities were not the trainwreck I was expecting based on the headline.

I didn't much care for the first song unplugged, but I think the song itself is more to blame for that. It's not a song really set up to be sung unplugged. I was reading comments here and the video player started another unplugged song from the same set, "Lost" I believe the title was. It sounded a lot better.

BenJammin 2009-11-17 07:52:46 PM
I listend to the first 2:15. It was good. Person claiming bad is a clueless, jealous jackass.
